I would prefer a shorter bow longbow or recurve does not matter which just in the 58"-48" range.
i would like to try the dryad pheonix... it has a grip like a hornes brushbow ( i think) which is a great grip.
been watching the used section but its such a new bow
I would buy a Hunt worthy turkish style recurve 58#@32" im 16 and since 500 isnt enough for the true schafer bow i want i just want a beautiful james turkish recurve.
a northernmist - good bowyer -great to deal with -high quailty flawless craftmamship check them out
I would talk to Marty at Apex Predator. He built me a beautiful Osage long bow that shoots better than some of my other customs. Plus, he's just a great guy to deal with.
I would try and find me a Shrew, Kanati, Beeler, Centaur or a Black Widow, used of course.
a used shrew or a great plains SR swift
Keep an open mind and keep your eyes on the classifieds. $ 500 can get a real nice bow from any number of custom bowyers. Take your time and decide what you want and you will find a good deal...if it don't work out put it on the classifieds and resell it. It happens all the time. Have fun in you quest for a bow......
Brand new Zona custom recurves are about $550. Unbelievable works of art!
A nice used Shrew or Griffin out of the Classifieds :wavey:
wow i would go back and get another wildhorse creek bow from mike dunaway bet bow i've owned would like to get a 62"hawke at 55# great bows

Yes, especially at that price. But I have seen them for $500 and a little less.
Thats easy,I'd buy[and did]an RER Arroyo. Used here from the classifieds of course. :saywhat:
I'd buy an exact replica of a '59 Bear Kodiak from Vintage Works myself. Great shooters.
That's easy, get a MOAB from Thunderstick Archery!!
RER Vortex, Shrew, Kohannah Recurve.......
Partial payment on a fully tricked out Thunderhorn Heartstopper, 2 piece takedown, 62" 55 at 28. Elkhorn all over it.
Any Howard Hill bow I always wanted one.

+1
used shrew would be my choice
treadway longbow, or thunderstick
Thats easy, another Mohawk..... or a RER! :archer:
Used widow recurve all day everyday.
If we're talking $500 for a NEW bow, it would be a 21st Century longbow made with the basic wood combination.
another Hill bow.
Northern Mist, reverse-handle, flatbow.
Down payment on a costume Shrew
Bear Montana longbow
I would call Mike Treadway and get on his list.
I just got an original design 56" bow and I love it.

x2
Cept' I'd have to get me a longbow! All black!
No question, Kanati.

Not a bad choice as well! Plus you could buy an Arrowmaster with the rest of the cash you saved! Great shooting bows!
Kanati by JK Traditions! They are fast, quiet, and accurate. You can have a custom R/D bow for just under $500. Jason Kendall is a great bowyer and a great guy.
An awesome used tomahawk. Oh wait I bought 2 of them. Woo hoo.
Predator or Dryad Orion Static tipped recurves.
Mohawk Longbow or save another $100 and get a Pronghorn. Ken
Another Kanati!
Treadway!!!
Bill
Crooked Stic 3 piece takedown recurve with bamboo limbs, ebony and osage riser.
Timberhawk
Oh sorry you said short, then a Crooked Stic one piece horse bow recurve.
For a longbow, I'd agree with those above that suggest a used Shrew. For a recurve, I'd recommend a used Predator. They make a 58" bow, but most will be 60". If you purchase either of these used, and don't like them, you can normally sell them for what you paid.
Uh oh... If I had 500 dollars, I'd still be off for about 2000 dollars for a true hornbow.
TradTech Black Onyx ILF riser (280.00) with TradTech Black Max wood/glass limbs (130.00). Short limbs would make a 56" bow and medium limbs would make a 58" bow.
Brand new, no wait, and endless limb choices in both recurve and longbow. Adjustable weight and tiller too.
I want to get a Kanati!
If you're set on a new bow, Jason Kendall's Kanati would be hard to beat for a short "hybrid" style. There are several other good bows in that range, tho.
The Sentman Deluxe Longbow on the tradgang for sale section. Love those bows.
Whisperstik. I defy anyone to find a better looking bow for the money.
http://www.whisperstikbows.com/
Well, as you see, no one will give you an answer that you can take to the bank. Matter of fact...they can't; too many dynamics involved in the archery game...fit, shooting characteristics, etc.
Try to find a place to shoot some.
Better looking doesn't alway fit better Mojostick. And, by your handle, one can't expect you to be objective 8^).
George,
JD custom fit my bows to exactly what I wanted. I went to his shop and he "custom fit" everything.
The original post only asked what we'd buy for $500. ;) :p
Kanati
Black Mountain is having a great sale, 500 gets you a new bow.
Whatever bow you shoot best...
I would be trolling the classified section for a Zipper or Blacktail TD myself but your milage may vary...
JL
I would check with Chad at Lost Creek. He is a sponser here and offers a N.A.T that is 49" nock to nock when strung and will run around $500.00!!!
I'd get a Bamabow Elite Classic.
http://www.bamabows.com/index.html
MOHAWK !
If I had $500.00 I would buy the Super Shrew that Terry has listed in the classifieds.
:banghead:
Chek mate hunter II
Im with gene, if you can find a shrew for 500 buy it, you wont be sorry. problem is a shrew that shows up for 500 bucks is gonna go fast....
I bought a Bear grizzly and a Bear montana. Got money left over for some arrows too.
a few nice staves.
A Northern Mist Classic. Got one on order. Due for delivery in January.
Save your $500, go to any and every 3D shoot you can after deer season, shoot every single bow you can get your hands on, in 6 months you will have saved yourself many, many thousands of dollars and have a much better idea of the bow that fits YOUR needs best.
Or, if you want to skip right to the end result, buy a used Morrison and be done with it ;)
I second what JC says. I'm on #14 and still haven't looking :( (
shrew or blackwidow.....Joe
I would buy a used Toelke Whip or Chinook. They usually go somewhere in the $400-$500 range
Sapphire Hawk from Ernie!
I've shot a lot of bows. You give me $500 to spend and I'll find another Canebrake and Longhunter.
If you have one in the 50# area, I would consider a swap.
44# Abbott Boo and 57@29 Balliseic.
no votes for chek-mate?
Ill tell you what would be nice is a commanche re curve from Curtis Byrd in Texas. But they are no longer being made Curtis died and his son quit making bows .Paul brtunner used to shoot one
If you're buying your first bow, I'd definitely recommend getting a couple of used bows and see in what direction your interest lies. In the 4 years I've been shooting, I've probably bought and sold 20 bows. Overall, I think I'm actually a couple of bucks ahead, but if it cost me a few, that would be OK too. I have a pretty good idea now what I want to own.
I will have at least one "D" type longbow and it will probably be a Mohawk Sparrowhawk 2-piece.
No way will I part with my Lost Creek r/d longbow.
And the one bow I won't even consider selling is the first bow I ever bought. I got a recurve, 60" 50# @ 28 from a local, relatively unknown maker. This bow by Kevin Cramer is physically the lightest bow on my rack. It draws smoother than any of my other bows, and is a real joy to shoot. I would get very little for it if I sold it as the maker did not mark it, but even if someone offered me $500 for it, I'd say "No" because I don't think I could replace it, even used, for that price.
I'd say do some shooting with a variety of used, but "good" bows that you think you might like. Try everyone's bow that you can get your hands on. . Then, when you have a good idea of what you really want, sell a couple of bows, put that money down on your "dream" bow and be happy until you find the next one you absolutely have to have :)
No question for me! New Chad Holm Osprey!
Hoot's, without even having to think about it!!!! Lee builds a great bow, recurve or longbow either way. I will have one myself one of these days soon.
A new Kohannah Kurve or Northern Mist longbow.

You are a wise man........if you get a used one you will have money left over for arrows and a quiver!! :jumper:
A good, used one of your choice. There are many listed in the classifieds that will fall in your price range. However, you do need to do your homework and determine exactly what your looking for. Good luck.
Do some careful investigative work and find a nice recurve or longbow that your wife will love to own and shoot! Believe me the dividends immediate and down the road will keep a smile on your face and it will be the best $500.00 you ever spend  :coffee:
MOAB or Thunderstick Mag, hands down.
I would get a Lost Creek
One Omega Longbow for me, One Omega Longbow for my son... My wife will inherit my son's old bow.
L.H. Custom bow, my good friend Lester makes that and they are just sweet.
For 100 more I would get a Big Jim Thunder Child.
Big Jim, Thunderstick, Mowhawk, Liberty, Kanati, Thunderhorn Coupstick, Toelke Plenty Coup, Big River, Bama, Stewart Slammer. All great bows you could pick up new for right around your price range. Remember that form follows function so whatever you get as a first bow doesn't have to sport premium wood vaneers and horn overlays which come with a higher price. My favorite hunting bow at the moment sports black glass limbs both back and belly.
I've yet to try one, but those Big River bows are on my got to try list and they are $500.00 with a 5 week wait time last I checked.
Best of luck on your journey :campfire:
~CB
Take a look at the Hoots recurve.
Another Maddog!
Another Timberhawk.....
Unless you are buying used, $500 is only a down payment for the top names.....
Treadway ...no doubt about it !!!!
I think I would save a bit more and get myself a a Brand spanking new Red Wing Hunter.
I would either get a new Mohawk or a used Tomahawk.
I'd get another Spirit R/D longbow from Bryan Holley. Very nice bows!
Bernie Bjorklund
NC Iowa/SW Wisconsin
Mentioned a few times here, Predator Hunter from Hunters Niche. Goes fot $585 new tyd.. Nice bow great shooter. I had them make me an old school version with a solid Bubinga riser. Or check out the classifieds a used Predator Classic nice woods should go for $550ish.
I bought my favorite bow, a used Griffin longbow, right here in the classifieds. Saved me a couple hundred bucks and a few years of waiting.
Little bit more money and I would have a Dave Johnson longbow, or another nate steen sunset hill, of course Craig makes a great bow at howard hill archery
I'm not telling....lol Mainly because I don't know what I don't know...yet!
There are a few "Hill styles" that I just love and love to shoot but I am always watching for a good used one that I can pick up just to see if it makes enough of an impression to have one built for me.
I'm talking "Hill style" that I haven't ever had the chance to shoot.
God bless,Mudd
I'd buy another Wallace Mountain about 5 pounds heavier.
Half interest in an ACS CX one piece.
What's is good here with 25Ks members you'll have that many answers.LOL.
But buying on the classified will aloud you to resell for the same price the bow that will not fit you.
I would put it toward a Howard Hill Redman.
I would get a Beeler Tracker. Mine should be ready sometime in Aug.
blackcreek or a used shrew
I'd keep saving until I had enough money to get exactly what I wanted.
Another St. Joe River long bow
Timberhawk or a good used bow
used whip
My mentor has been gone 20 years.(still sad) somehow an older lady not related to him has his last Tice and Watts. She has not felt like selling it for $100. But I think$500 might to it. That would really make my day to get my hands on his bow. Term
A Spirit Longbow. A fine hand crafted bow from an excellent Colorado Bowyer, Bryan Holley. New, never shot $450 outta the box. I have shot my lads against Hummingbird, Rampart, Toelke, Black Widow & Chastain's finest and I'm here to tell ya, I've made 'em cry. One man who makes one bow by hand. It just doesn't get any better at this pricetag.
for $500 I'd buy two............. Kodiak Hunters!
For 599.00 you can get a brand new Pittsley Predator Hunter.
A good used Widow would do also.
Hooooooots Recurve
I think I'd just build about 3 and see which one I liked best! :goldtooth:
I would buy a new Quinn Stallion, 60", #50, and have money left over for arrows and broadheads, take this package and go kill lots of critter.s
There is a Widow PSR for $500 in the classifieds right now. And a take down to boot! Too short for me or I'd be all over that one.
1/2 of any of the bows I own. LOL
Matt
There are over a half dozen bows on the St Jude's auction that are still well under this limit including this one that I currently have the high bid on. Come and get it! :D
