Title: Last "Hurrah!": The Build-up Piggy Hunt
Post by: Benny Nganabbarru on November 01, 2009, 04:11:00 AM
This weekend presented an opportunity for our last camping hunt before the rains come. As it was, an isolated downpour hit the station the day of our arrival, and I experienced my first rain since March (and torrential, too, it was) on the drive up. The rain wasn't enough to ease the lot of the cattle, though, but soon, hopefully, it will transform the place, and the cattle will be happy once again for six or seven months. The conditions were awfully hot and humid, and from soon after dawn until evening, the sweat poured out in torrents. We had some nice success against the pigs, and enjoyed a couple of "nearly" encounters with buffalo. Perhaps next year. An esky full of blocks of ice and cool drinks helps make life easier, as does a tarp spread over the camp.

I had a bit of luck with this boar. The bow is a 62" Schafer Silvertip, 80# @ 28"; the arrows were Douglas fir wearing STOS broadheads, and made by TradGanger Joe Lorenzen.

My mate Tony shot this pig with his 70" Barry Johnson longbow, 80# @ 28"; his arrows were also Douglas fir wearing STOS, and made by Joe. This pig dashed away into the grass when hit, and then turned and ran out into the billabong to perish. Tony hates water, and it was quite funny to watch him retrieve it. There were freshwater crocodiles about, making him nervous every time they splashed away.

Here's a scenic photo of the billabong:

A billabong is a long pool of water next to a creek or river, that was once part of the creek or river bed, until the creek or river decided to move over a few yards.

An esky is a cooler.

And a station is a ranch.

Sorry, JC, I really should've taken more pictures. With the heat and all, it slipped my mind a bit. The story with that boar isn't too spectacular. He was actually asleep nearby where Tony and I were talking, and he really should've heard us, but we spied him, and I went and despatched him.

Good going Ben and your buddy.
It seem most of you guys down that way shoot some pretty heavy bows, I shot with Steve Georgio a few months back, he's from down your way and he shot a #70 longbow all day long.
