Title: Arrow selection assistance
Post by: rascal on October 31, 2009, 03:28:00 AM
Hey guys I know I have seen a few threads on this but I alway seem to miss the formula for selecting arrows.

I just finished a new longbow 67 inches nock to nock 75# @ 25 1/2" draw (my draw length).  This is a self bow with a flemish twist 16 strand Dacron string if that makes a difference.  I like to shoot 125 grain points but Im not dead set on point weight. The bow is not center shot but it isnt terrible either.

My question is with my shorter draw length what spine range should I be considering.  I figured I can use anywhere from 30 to 27 inch arrows and vary point weight to fine tune the arrows a bit.

Any help is appreciated.

Rascal first of all you should look to shoot at least 750 gr arrow to make sure your bow lasts.

I would start with about 60 -65 spined shafts and probably hickory for the weight and strength.

Hey thanks for the bump Hap, I havent had time to get back on the site for a couple days with the opener of pheasant here in IA.  Also had my brother hard at work on his very first self bow as well so lots of time at the bench lately.

Wingnut, I appreciate the direction and I thaught that might be close to the answer I would get although I hadnt considered arrow weight into the equation.  As usual every time I think I have this thing figured out I am humbled by the wealth of knowledge I find here.

Now where to order up some hickory arrows?  Time for some research I guess.

Thanks again!
