Title: Face paint question
Post by: BDann on October 29, 2009, 08:38:00 AM
Hey fellas, what do you all use for face paint in the woods?  I tried the burnt cork technique, but man that stuff was hard to get off.  I like the price though!  Any other suggestions?

I like the Hunter Specialties face paint.  Comes in a little compact with a mirror.  It comes off really easy with a little baby oil but it stays on pretty good, even when I'm sweating alot.  It doesn't seem to dry out as bad as some of the other cheaper brands.  The one I'm using I've had for two years and it's still good.

Cool.  I'll check it out....even if it comes in a compact with a mirror!  :biglaugh:

2nd vote for hunter specialties. Comes off easy with baby wipes. Wife wasn't too happy with me burning cork in the bathroom early in the mornings :-)

Carbo mask works ok but I'm not sold on it. I am using it this season. Pretty expensive and doesn't stay on as well as the other brands. Comes off very easy with water or sweat.

I prefer the burnt cork, but hate stopping at the grocery store on the way home from the hunt looking like that.  I've got a "compact and mirror" that I don't care for (seems to come off with sweat easily), but I believe it is a different brand than HS.  I have some HS cream-style in tubes that I think will work well, but have not tried them yet.  This year on stand, I am mostly using a turkey hunting veil type camo net mask with wire slot for your eyes which fits around my glasses too.

Wallmart has good stuff in tubes in the halloween dept. Cheap, at a buck a tube, no smell, stays on, covers good and comes off easy with baby but wipes, or soap and water.

I don't know about California but here is PA. a lot of the wine bottlers are using synthetic corks. Haven't seen real corks used in a couple of years.

I get my cork from the wine tasting bar at our local winery. The last time I was there the girl gave me a lunch size brown paper sack full. I can only get a hunt or two out of a cork without losing it so I am glad she was so generous.

Funny thing is she made the comment: "You must be a hunter" I must not be the only one who has asked.

I use 2 different types depending on the situation.
For hunts where I will be sitting in tree stand and not stalking/sweating  - I used Scent Shield Easy Off Face Camo.  I was VERY skeptical at first but this stuff washes off with water NO scrubbing.  Think of it as the the no-more-tears version of face camo. It is the consistency of child finger paint and washes off EASY!

For all day stalking down in the dirt and mud hunts where i will be sweating, I use the hunter specialties camo.  The hunter specialties stuff will stay on all day but can still be removed w/o killing one's self (unlike the USGI stuff). I also like the fact that the hunter specialities has mirror for signaling if things go awry and you get really lost.

Get most of my coek from good tequilla and whiskey bottles.  Ask any bartender at a restaurant and they will help you out.  My ask seems to come off quickly with soap and water on a washcloth, or as we say here in MO warshcloth.

Second vote for the Haloween face camo sold at Wal Mart.  Cheap, goes on easily, stays on, and comes off with water.  I've tried the all and this stuff at $1.00 per tube is the best.  But, I couldn't find my tubes tonight so I just stuck my fingers in some clay at the side of a brook and that went on pretty slick too.  Didn't cost a penny.

I have a bunch of tubes of the old Bear Archery camo that I've been using for year. Doesn't seem to dry up. Running low on the brown, so I bought the walmart halloween facepaint a few weeks ago. Works very well for 1.00/tube.

I second wal-mart halloween makeup. I bought good size tube of brown & black for $1 each. A little goes a long way on this stuff.

Cork is easy to but on-line.  Search for wine making supplies.  Expect to pay 12-15 cents a piece. Order 30 - 100. Plus a few bucks for shipping.

I still have a supply of the old Fred Bear camo face paint. I found a stash of like 6 unopen packs in my dad's old stuff.

To take it off, use the makeup removing wipes you'd find in the cosmetic section of the grocery store. Better than most baby wipes IMHO.

I've seen bags of corks at Craft Shops.
