But I've been thinking about tanning my first trad-deer hide this year and was wondering if anyone knew where to start? I've seen the bow-building forum, the knife forum, but is there a leather forum? I'm just looking for some resources. Thinking about brain-tanning, but I'm not totally sure where or how to start. If I can get a good hide, I'm going to try to make some quivers, coats, and other trad hunting gear for myself. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Also, sorry if this is completely off-topic. Just didn't know where else to post this :)
You have the world at your fingertips right now! I googled "brain tanning" and got many hits when I learned how to do it.
There will be slight variations from one post to another but the basics will be the similarities between all of them.
One trick I did find, though, and that's buy cow brains at a butcher. You'll have more to work with and won't have to destroy the skull if you want it for a trophy.
Cabelas sells tanning solution with instructions
I know you can substitute a dozen eggs for the brain. I would imagine you can find instructions by googling...

Thanks guys for the advise. Since I posted this, I've found the "Deerskin to Buckskin" book at amazon and a bunch of tutorials online. It's refreshing to know that quite a few people do this, and I'm not some weirdo. I actually expected this post to get pulled, since it doesn't have a lot to do with trad hunting (but a lot to do with trad-tanning!)
Anyway, thanks again!
Joe
