I've spent many years researching the perfect libation and cigar for a proper memorial service to celebrate the life of a deer that had the good taste to give itself to a traditional archer(as opposed to the disgace that would be associated with any other demise). I'm sure this varies considerably by geography and all can weigh in. With all due respect to Ron LaClair and the Shrewhaven gang, I've tried Basil Hayden's. Yes it is quite wonderful, but tight-a** that I am, I never could give it the enjoyment it deserves for thinking about what I paid for it. There is a recession going on you know. So until things turn around (and I'm not holding my breath), I'd like to nominate a sip of George Dickel #12 accompanied by an Arturo Fuente Curleyhead for all deer memorials held in and around the township of Crumpler, N.C. Can I get a second?
That would do just fine, but I would prefer a Macanudo Maduro Mini and a Killians! :bigsmyl:
I enjoy a bottle of water. No reason to dull my senses after an accomplishment like that.
I don't do seegars anymore, but a bottle of Slow Elk seems appropriate.
I nominate a Punch Elite Maduro and a few ice cold Coors Lights!
I'll pass on the smoke thanks, and just sit back with Jack when we're all done.
Makers Mark or Bookers. A very small cube in the glass. I never understood cigars until I tried bourbon. Made for each other.
Joshua
some smoooooth Black Velvet or my ole buddy Jimmy Beam! i have a few antler pipes that are specail to me that i fire up on said occasions!
I do like a nice Irish whiskey after. Jameson is one of my faves.
Wild Turkey 101 for the celebration.
When butchering with my buddy Bob, my landlord asked Bob what kind of beer he preferred. Bob turned around and said the kind that says BEER on the label. That and a couple of Advil later is our usual for doing the cut up.
Gave up smoking 3 years ago, so the cigars are out but as far as libations go Benedictine is about perfect. Smooth, warming & autumnal. (Or a good long shot of Laphroaig if I can't find Ben ;) )
Knob Creek small batch bourbon whiskey. Puts Crown Royal to shame. About 23 to 28 $$$/bottle. Sam's Club has it for the better price.
Don't do cigars usually except for weddings and babies.
In my opinion, Evan Williams (bourbon), Jameson (Irish) and Famous Grouse (Scotch) are the best bang for the buck as far as whiskies go. I celebrated my first, a billy goat in Australia, with a TED's, Tooheys Extra Dry, it's all we had!
Macandudo or a Ashton for me, a chilled glass of Whilhem red, a local wine, and I am living a dream. Whiskey and Tequila is a no no for this fellow. Last time I got drunk on Tequila I sobered up 8 months later.
How about just on your knees, and thank GOD for the wonderful nourishment He gave you and your family!
Now boys, there is something to be said for enjoying a traditional libation in giving thanks for the deer. Our camp enjoys a shot of Jaeger to warm the soul in acknowlegment. The prayers have already been said when you recover the deer. The empty tags get tied to the bottle in the freezer....... there's lots of tags on that bottle. :(
I agree with dagwood64, well said!! Jason
Well said Gordy.
Joshua
I second both Biggie and dagwood64.
I'll second that Olddogrib, George Dickel and
A. Fuente, as good as it gets for this blue
collar bowhunter. All things in moderation.
I don't do the cigars but Mcallan 21 yr.old Scotch go down real good.
Haven't had a need for a drink since my divorce(no offence to those that enjoy a drink) so I usually have a soda. As far as smoke that means I'm stuck on the downwind side of the campfire. Ceegars turn me a little green around the gills.
Dagwood,
Thanks are offered before the deer ever leaves the woods! Place a twig in it's mouth, kneel and gently cradle it's head while thanking the Creator. We keep our priorities straight around here.
Well, I don't drink or smoke, but back in the day, I used to think that a chewy red wine was a nice accompniment to grilled backstraps.
These days, it's hard to beat the sound of laughter from good friends, the smell of swirling wood smoke, and the taste of a strong cup of coffee to celebrate the hunt.
Claudia
I think I'll have a Ashton Churchill and a shot of Jack...Mike
Hmmm I'm the odd man out, I fire up the grill!
I'd have to agree with Dagwood and Coovey first and formost... Then a good Aturo Fuente short story and nice hot cup of Java

AFTER THE PRAYERS comes a deep red Zin, and if there's smoke around it's the California kind too.
Go figure, I'm Cuban, have access to the best cigars in the world, and you couldn't pay me to smoke tobacco.
BUT WHATEVER YOU DO, don't loose that reverence!
A prayer of thanks and good cup of coffee next to the wood stove would work for me. Maybe a glass of wine with the backstraps.....
Like a recent deer hunting saying goes, "If it is brown, it is down!" I prefer mine to be charred white oak flavored. Any decent cigar will do but if someone wants to give me a good one, it is appreciated. d;^)
20 year old port or older
While the blackstrap is grilling a nice glass of Gentleman Jack over ice and reflective moment along with thanks to the Great Spirit for wonders that we all call nature. The cigar sounds great, but dang I have a headache for the next day and can't get the smell out of my nose for a week. Truth is giving the thanks is the most important, every time that I open my eyes to the wonders of nature it just seems fitting to thank Grandmother.
H20 hits the spot.
"if there's smoke around it's the California kind too."
Uhhhhh, you talking about the recently legalized kind? Never tried it but I think I'd take a cigar first and I don't particularly like 'em.
The California Kind along with some good Evan Williams.. Cant hunt in the morning so sleep in..
Water works for me too.
Mi Favorito and a single barrel Jack.... they go together great!
I'll take a bottle of my homebrewed California Common or a nice 90 minute IPA from Dogfish Head. I prefer seasoned oak smoke to cigar. Slainte to all lucky/skilled enough to fill your tag.
