Title: Oklahoma longbow success
Post by: Crash on October 24, 2009, 03:19:00 PM
Today is the first day of our blackpowder season, so the woods are full of people.  I have been hunting a little piece of public land close to the house and have seen some deer, but not alot.  I decided to move my stand into another tree as most of the deer are coming in behind me and it's very difficult to shoot directly behind the tree with my longbow.  I got the stand hung and was fairly quiet doing it this morning.  Was sitting there enjoying the fall colors, crisp air and light fog when I looked down and here comes a forky.  He came into about 5 yards and while I may not be a crack shot, I'm pretty good at 5 yards.  I picked my spot and shot, hit the spot I was looking at.  He takes off running and I keep my eye on him as long as I can.  Waited 30 minutes and trailed him up.  He's no giant but I am proud of him anyway, taken with a longbow on the first day of what sounded like a war on marginal public land.  Bow is a Centaur 58" 46@28 shooting CE Heritage 150's with a weighted Magnus II, total arrow weight is 540 grains.

Congrats Crash!
I was interested to see what bow killed this deer. You've bought and sold a bunch of nice ones.

Getting close enough for a 5 yard shot on an Oklahoma public land deer is REAL HUNTING.

OUTSTANDING!

I hope all my shots are 5 yards.          :clapper:

awesome  :) - always good - i am not a trophy hunter in the horn or antler sense....everything with a bow for me is some kinda trophy.

We are off for bison next weekend

Great job Crash, proud for you!  Even the squirrels are hard to hunt on the public lands I haunt.  Getting a deer inside of 20 yards takes a true hunter.  5 yards!?! More like a ghost!
