For those of you that have children. I am buying my son a custom longbow for christmas. However I am not sure of the weight he would need. I am thinking 18 @ 24" would work. He is 7 years old 45" tall and weights 46 lbs. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
What do your kids shoot weight wise and their age?
Thanks,
James
James,
My 8 year old is close to your sons size and he shoots a Black Rhino m-48 light bow 15#@22" with no problems. Actually I'm looking for a heavier model for him now. I did start him on the m-35 first when he was around 4 years old. Check out those Black Rhino Bows! I don't care to much for their 1/4 arrows. They shoot great but break way to easy.

My oldest son is eight (as of Aug), and one of the biggest in his grade, when he was 6 I bought him a Internature recurve 48" 15lb pull (worked well for him at that time)- he draws that way past what you should and needs a new one. I would think 20 or 25lbs. I am fortunate enough to be able to pass it down to a younger sibling - bow rotation. That's all I can tell you.
I bought my son a Predator recurve about a month ago.It is 26#@28".He is 6 years old and he handles it very good. I have even shot it some at my 29" draw it is smooth as silk and it is very surprizeing how quick it shoots.I called Ron at Huntersniche and talked to him about the bow.He was really helpful.I would recomend this bow for any youngin.
Hope this helps. Good luck
Maddog in the Sponsor Classifieds here. Given a lot of them away to kids that age and all have been very happy and Mike is a great guy to boot.
Thanks for all your input. I am thinking that 18@ 24 will give him about 15 lbs at his draw? I measured him and think he will draw about 21" or so. I am not sure if the 3 lbs per inch rule of thumb would be correct on these small bows.
I ordered a couple of Pup longbows from Maddog Archery about a week ago. I am really new to the traditional archery game (as are my boys, obviously) and Mike was exceedingly patient with tutoring me through the process of getting me a great combination of what I wanted and what they needed. They are 5 and 8 years old and bigger kids for their ages. Looks like Santa moved his workshop to Rupert, Idaho this year...

You can call Chuck at Black Rhino. He is very good at matching kids to bows.
