I am trying to decide on some layer clothes to buy. Trying to figure out how to word this so here it goes. I have been looking at buying a outer top and bottom with wind barrier that I will always have on and just add more layers under. My thinking is the wind sheer really needs to be the outer most layer to do the best job. If it is the inside layer then the wind would just cool of what ever is over and loose the insulation effect.(IMO) So what I am thinking is the predator brown deception fleese top and bottom with wind sheer. Then as it gets colder just add my wool long johns, mid layer fleece and wool vest as needed. What ya think
I like the wool sweaters with windshear from Cabelas. That is what I always wear on the outside. They are heavy and warm and really work well with layers underneath. I'm not too picky on the pattern.
If you like to eat deer meat and lookat big antlers stay away from the wind shear, I had the berber fleece from cabelas for 2 days and sold it. Noisy if a deer is close it will blow out of there when you draw your bow .
I don't have an answer for the wind but wind shear is noisy IMO.

If you are talking about the new 380 gram Predator fleece with wind barrier then you are good to go with what you said. we hunted in it yesterday for the first time this year and was more than warm @ 30 degrees with ullfrotte 400 gram wool longjohns on underneath. DEAD QUIET TOO ! Love the chest pockets with zippers, just right to keep my cell phone in. had some 15 mph winds and nothing was coming thru. If I was hunting in the teens I would simply add my silk longjohns under the Ulfrotte and add my vest. Don't forget your head and cover it good.

I have two layers of fleece tops and bottoms for when it gets really cold. I like to wear a windbreaker type of shirt between the layers so it's quiet.

Some of the wind barrier products are noisy. But I do have one insulated Predator coat with it that is very quiet and a Cabelas wool sweater that is not bad. Some of the stuff does make a little noise though, especially when it is very still out. So check it out before laying down the cash. If you hear any noise at all in the store it will sound 10 times louder in the woods on a still day. Easily loud enough to alert a deer at close range.
I would plan on only utilizing the wind shear stuff on windy days for the above mentioned reasons. Too noisy for me without wind.
I can hear the wind barrier in my vest so it is going back. On the 380 gram fleece can you hear that when you move. What I want is one outer shell for all season and just layer under so I need something quiet when it is dead still. Preadator doesnt make a fleece without wind barrier or insulation. I may look at day one in fleece, it tough to decide.

Gamehide makes some nice stuff. I have a pullover that I wear overtop my wool sweaters when the wind blows. Fairly quiet for a wind breaker.
Wind and cold seems to be a constant in my hunting life....and like everyone, the windstopper seems to me to be a bit noisy. What works best for me is a light, soft, insulated nylon jacket....I think made by "Big Smith" or something. One of those cheap work jackets. It goes under most of my clothes and wool, and it does the job well. It's kinda like one of those quilted flannel shirts, but less bulky because no flannel. Anyway...layers is the answer, with one being a windbreak as close to an outer layer as possible.
T- I have being thinking similar thoughts. Already do some of it, but I wanted a lighter jacket to carry on my back than my good wool.
So- for what it is worth- I talked to Predator about the fleece jacket. The gal told me they actually use TWO layers of windstopper. I was surprised and impressed. She also said the owners were very particular about noise in clothes. . . I would like to hear about others experience. . .
My experience with windstopper has not been the greatest either, but I am wondering if there are different brands like the water proofing agents; "gore-tex" etc.

See my above post on the new 380 gr fleece from Predator. It is awful quiet to me. I used to hunt in Cabelas Legacy Fleece and this is much quieter than it.
If you talk to Jeff @ Gray Wolf he will fill you in on wind barriers. Yes, there is a diff in brands and types. He uses the best there is. JMHO

I used to wear long sleeve camo T shirts for the outer layer no matter the weather. Just get really big ones. In the wind I used to wear a golf wind shirt and pants beneath that, Golf style wind shirts let almost no wind thru and (at least mine is)are very light weight and quiet.
I found that, back then when I had no money, I didn't need any camo except the top layer and everything else could be red for all I cared. A $25 XXL or XXXL long sleeve T and a lightweight larger camo bottom was all the camo I really needed.
Try that golf wind shirt out I really does work. It is the end of golf season up north, sales abound.

Well I know it's pricey but the Sitka Gear is real hard too beat as a windproof outer layer. I'm saving my change in hopes of be able to buy some before we go moose hunting in Alaska next year.

i picked my wool coat up at gander mountin and it has wind stop and i use a fleece pull over under it and in western Ks where i hunt it's all i need with my insulated pants last year i sat in my stand all day in 25mph winds and never realy got cold
I just picked up a Day One fleece with windstop used off Craigs List and used this weekend for the first time. I'm happy to say I was really impressed with it. Awesome coat well desinged and put together and love the predator camo. I've got two Cabelas wool sweaters with wind stop. One makes noise the othe doesn't go figure.
