Just returned from a public ground hunt near Gavins Point Nebraska with a few of my closest friends.
This was to be a selfbow only hunt, we all had stonepoints and bone points mounted on rivercane and cedar arrows. I had only one rivercane arrow tipped with a stone point, the rest were cedars and 145 grain grizzlies-
Long story short, I chose to hunt on the ground and set my ambush in what appeared to be a well traveled route, two deer came in mid day and offered a 10-12 yard shot- I was so tore up! shooting an arrow i made with wrapped turkey feathers, stone point and selfknocked etc... well I shot low right under the chest and managed to jam some hair in between the stone point and the rivercane- no blood just hair so I was relieved that all in all a clean miss not a wounded deer.
So an hour or so later 3 more deer come through and I am standing this time with my ghillie suit on and ready, the shot was six yards or closer- man what a rush to hunt with a selfbow on the ground and on public ground! This was my first selfbow kill and the first deer I've taken on public ground!
A great hunt with my best friends, these are the times I live for!

We shot arrows into the lake to honor those that came before us and some of our friends who have passed on.

This is "congoman" our fearless leader and a man who has spent his life in the woods and has taught me and many others the lessons of life in the woods.
Nice deer, and a really nice looking bow RTWT.
Congrats!!!
Nice looking bunch. Always better when you can share the experience with friends.
Great looking hunt and pics Todd! Ain't nothing sweeter then them selfbows, plus sharing with friends  Steve
Looks like a great weekend, congratulations!
Well we could have had more than one deer in that tree but i kinda had a WTF moment! With osage selfbow in hand, cedar arrow with homemade bone point on end and a doe at 7 yards I came to full draw Picked a spot and watched it fly directly over her back. Oh well I had an awseome time. At least I had a shot and was able to have a deer so close, and was able to spend time in GOD'S Country with good friends.
Wow that is Great... Congrats on a nice deer.
Tell Us about your bow Please.
The bow was bought from a fellow TradGanger, it's a John Strunk Osage selfbow 53@27 66" snakebacked, shoots really well although I'm scared to death drawing it to 29 but it seems to spit an arrow very well! A beautiful bow, I love hunting with it!
Now that's special, an all self bow hunt! Great deer and great challenge. I like it!
Great hunt! That is a trophy of the highest order! :clapper:

Great pictures Todd! That's the area where I grew up, pretty up there isn't it? I'll be up there in November. Glad you had a great time. Your off to a heck of a year so far!
Thanks Doug! I'm chasin a really nice one up around my parts, hopefully get him in the next few weeks before the orange army shoots up the woods. We're thinking of going back up there so let me know if you would like to come along, maybe you can show us the "good" spots!
Cool!
Missed a doe with my self bow and am still trying to break the ice. Got a couple more weeks before the season ends. Nice shooting.
And now the rest of the story. We arrive and get camp set up,then head out for an evening hunt. No deer were seen that evening. Back at camp and hungary everyone wants to eat. Broken Arrow 1 aka Jimmy had made a wonderful stew that was heating on the wood stove.Todd where are the plates? Todd? Todd? Oh golly Gee I forgot.Wonderful.Supper was consumed out of two coffee cups and the wash pot.Next morning ah breakfast, favorite meal, gets ya going ya know. Todd where are the eggs? Todd? Well golly sakes, I forget. Wonderful I really just wanted coffee anyway. That evening for supper I had seen some onions and bell peppers and thought I could dice those up with the potatoes. Todd did you get the potatoes? Todd? Wonderful By this time Im thinking about sending Todd into the lake with one of his arrows to dive for fresh water clams. Thinking he could use his arrow to pry them open and then we would have something to eat.It was a great time. Oh ya those arrows that were launched into the lake, we were really trying to hit a carp that was on the surface so we wouldnt starve.Todd redeemed himself by shooting that doe, then I knew that Jimmy and myself wouldnt perish for the lack of food. What great friends and what a great trip.
