Bill
Good luck to everyone in the southern tier...Been a good year up north so far...Mike
So how did everyone do......? Are you guys still out there?
Hey Guys this is should probably be a new thread but here's what I saw:
1 Raccoon.
1 glimpse of a deer my friend said was a spike buck.
1 sound of a flock of turkeys
Then I switched spots at noon
1 doe and fawn out of range
2 spike bucks
2 button bucks
the last 4 were at 25 yards the edge of my comfort zone. It was OK though because they were off limits on this property. I had a blast finally seeing some deer. I'll get soem meat in the freezer yet.
My friend hit a doe high and we lost the blood at night. He went back today to look. He also saw a moose near Cambridge NY.
In all a great opener. Cold but a good day none the less.
How did everyone else do. I see Curt downed one.
Charlie
Lot's of tracks...very few fur sightings. We're still on the hunt!
Not to worry though...still got 5 weeks to go!!
How's things lookin in Byron?
Had a 1 1/2 year old "nubbin buck" (spikes about as long and fat as my thumb) give me a "slam-dunk" 10 yard, quartering away shot at 7:30 Saturday morning. I let him walk. Just too early, too soon. Was treated to a parade of does and fawns all morning after that, what a great day!!!!!
Never did get out Sunday though.....
Opening day was all a Still Hunter could ask for. Had a spike buck walking and feeding right toward me. Fifty yards, then forty, then behind some oaks. Pops out head on at twenty yards back behind another oak at ten... Got my bow up and ready for a broadside FIVE YARD SHOT... My heart was pounding so hard I thought I was gonna pass out!
Out he comes, broadside at five yards. Super calm now. Moment Of Truth. Wide open and mine! As I focus on "that hair" he picks up an acorn as I draw. BUSTED! The little guy caught me drawing and was in mid air and almost gone in a fraction of a second.
He gave me another chance but I missed at twenty something and gave the little guy an education. Or did he give me one? ... :banghead:
Gonna head on back up there in a day or so. Hope to play it right ifin' I get another crack at it.
... mike ...
Must have been a rush Mike. Sounds like most everyone at least saw some deer.
Charlie
I'll be huntin' in Freedom, NY Oct 28-Nov 2, can't wait.
Had a close encounter with a doe here in Fl.on Sunday am. She picked me off in a ground blind at twelve yards, just needed her to turn a little more.
Good luck everyone!
Jim, Where in NY is Freedom?
Finally found one unlucky doe just before dark yesterday! Picture perfect at 15yards. She ran 150yds and lay down for good in front of my buddy. Doesn't get much easier to find than that!
Don very cool. Nice shoot.Meat in the freezer.
Freedom is out in western NY not far from me, probably a five or six hour drive from were you are Curt.
had a button buck at 15 yards and 4 does at 30. passed on the button, might now do that by next week though!
Had some yearling doe's come in,not shooters though. Then a three point came in to check them out and run them off. He was well with in range just not legal to shoot around here.AHH let him grow.I'll be out in the morn..
I'll be sitting on different property this weekend. Different landowner different rules. I will try for my first trad deer and my first with a bow. Any unlucky deer to walk withing range better pray! :help:
Charlie
Guys this weather crazy isnt it? We had snow Friday today it was 65 and supposed to be warmer tomorrow. I might just hunt turkey until it cools down hard to stay out of the woods when its like this just stinks for deer hunting.
cold rain for the weekend, sound like a good days to watch football opr baseball playoff....
Bill
It's been real slow around here, I don't remember see as few deer as I have. But I'm still plugging away and going to hunt every day I can rain or shine hot or cold, put in the time and it will happen
I found a great spot on the dairy farm I'm hunting this year. I don't feel comfortable leaving my bround blind set up there though. I had one almost bump into it last night at about 6:20 and the light was terrible by the time it came into the open. I've decided that I'm going to build a natural blind in this spot this weekend. I'm definitely getting closer, much closer.
Congrads Don thats sweeeet
I may hit the woods tomorrow after work definately on the weekend
I have a four day weekend :bigsmyl:
rain rain go away.....
Jim don't rub it in..Good luck..Get it rub it in:^)
Got out on Monday...beautiful day to be in the woods...didn't see any deer but found some early scrapes and rubs in an area where I've been lucky before so that's where I'll be this coming Wednesday...good luck to all
Curt,
Stone Knife is right,Freedom is in Western NY in Cattaraugus County (about an hour southwest of Buffalo).I'll be hunting for 4 days and steelhead fishing for one.Good luck everybody!
QuoteJim don't rub it in
If it makes you feel better I was called into work twice, chlorine pump was troublesome, and at 2:30 AM for electrical. But on the good note I have two more days off, and I'll be after the one we call the Bologna buck :goldtooth:
Slice it thin for a Swamp Thing samich! :)
... mike ...
Chemical pumps will do it to you all the time. Seems like they know when you need a little time to yourself. There very needy..Only water treatment guys would know. Mike shouldn't you be upstate. There starting to make there scrape's. A little doe lure behind the ears and the chase is on.Run and hide have an arrow ready..Life is good..
I had bad luck yesterday got called into work and then a flat tire, I never made it out. The Bologna buck had a day off :bigsmyl: Thin it is Mike that stuff has to last a year :help:
Things seem a bit slow around my house at least this past weekend,my guess is it's early and warm what we need is a good cold front to blow in and hold on a few days preferably when I can get out there.I here a high of near 70 for Fri grrrrrr and I was gonna take it off
Did ya see the forecast for the next weekend though Swampbuck? A little white in the forecast the beginning of November? Could it get any better? I feel a little sniffle coming on!
Don
Hello everyone!! I am back! I have been hunting hard and have seen several nice bucks but all too far off! The last few days have been slow but I did see a nice 8pt. with two does yesterday morning. I watched them feed for over an hour but they never came close. Good luck to all!! Shawn
Hey Shawn! Great to have ya back... been wondering where you've been.
Hi Shawn!!!!!!!!!! :wavey: Go Git'em Brother!!!!! :archer:
Went out tonight and sat under a roosting tree, looking for a turkey. No turkeys showed up, but I had a nice big doe broadside at 15 yards, with three more behind her. Man I wish I could shoot does here... :banghead:
Think I need to hit the state land this week and fill a doe tag. Im twitching because Im not hunting enough...
Nice to see you Shawn!
According to Charlie Alsheimer's book "Hunting Whitetails by the Moon" The "Rutting Moon" is Nov.2nd. This means that the Prime Chase Phase Period should be Oct.31st to Nov.8th and the Breeding Window should be from Nov.9th to Nov.22nd.
Things should really kick into high gear next week!!!!! and guess what??? Yup!!!!! I'm on vacation AGAIN!!!!! :archer:
glad to have ya beack shawm!!
gaff
Chuck I love that book. I've got the first week of nov off. They are already chasing. The scape are hot..Shawn great to hear from you. Let us know how it go's..Had a sow a cub come by this afternoon..That was great..
This weekend can't come fast enough for me! Now if I can get the Green Light from my wife... ... This should be interesting...
* Hey There Shawn! Glad to see ya again!
... mike ...
Really been looking for you Shawn. Good to see you again!! Put some venison on the meat pole!!
Larry & Greg
Glad to see you back Shawn, it's been pretty slow around here a lot of night time moment, it may be the warm days.
Hunted for five sits in Rhinebeck last week. First night at about 5:30pm, a small six walked along stone wall making scrapes and tearing up saplings. He was about 45 yards from me. I was sitting on scrapes that I was thinking were made by him previously. Second night I got in the woods and saw 4 white flags waving to me as I arrived at the stand! Darn it, they were moving earlier than I thought. Third night the weirdest thing happened. A HUGE flock of Starlings decided it was time to get together in the trees and they were making a deafining sound that made turkeys run and squirrels hide. It was amazing on how many there were! All at once there was a giant swooshing of wings and they were gone, but so was everything else. Then came night four. I had twelve turks all around and making a racket. All became silent and that old familiar sound of crunch, crunch, crunch came to my ears. I look over my left shoulder and here comes a nice buck walking the scrapes I was set up on. As he walked torward me, I lifted my bow when his head was behind trees. Here he comes, closer, closer and I can see he is a nice 8 about ear wide. He gets 15 yards from me and I draw letting the cedar fly. WHACK... right into a maple sapling as thick as my pointer and middle finger! I never saw the darn thing. He didnt really run but never gave me another "ok to shoot" shot. Oh well, It was cool and saw some nice deer. Those deer were really out early and my buddy said he had that same buck chasing on two does a couple of days ago
Put a nice doe down tonight. Double lung at fifteen yrds.Had the loins and heart for dinner.Life is good..
Nice going Tucker!
This weekend cannot come fast enough. Had a tough day at work and could use a little time in the sticks.
Charlie.
Only saw squirrels last weekend!
Been a little slow around here since my opening day doe....but I know there's plenty of good deer around...the next couple weeks should be great if it gets cold!
Way to go Fred
Congrads Tdog :wavey:
Welcome back Shawn! You were missed! Haven't had a chance to hunt NY yet, but will get out tomorrow and the rest of the weekend.
Rained out today...took off next Mon and Tues... hope to get out then...
Been seeing plenty of deer. Did see a one horn buck chase a doe on Sunday. Picked up what was left of a monster that got hit in the road. He was a typical twelve pointer what a waste !
Way to go Tucker, now that you have a deer shouldn't you be spending more time at the water plant :bigsmyl: I'm hoping to get out this afternoon and I'm off for three days, I hope, last weekend I had four days but was called into work for three of them.
I've gone out a couple of time on Long Island. I saw a small 8pt walking out about 50 yards and was able to rattle him in to around 18 yards. He wasstanding broadside looking around with his hair up and heended up jumping the string on me. I would have hit him high lung with my shot but he was just to fast. I'm still kicking myself for not aiming for the heart since i knew he was obviously on alert.
Tucker had another good day in the deer woods today...I'm sure he'll be along to tell ya about it. :coffee:
Uh oh.....sounds promising. Any day now tuck...
OK Tucker, lets hear it.
Jeff, I used to literally live down the street. In the barn converted into apts. at the end of River rd. I love your area!
Saturday's almost here! :bigsmyl:
Charlie
I thought he would have chimed in by now but he might still be stuffin' meat in the freezer.
Charlie,I know where that is...use to date a girl there.Ever do any hunting around here.
Put a nice eight down this morning. 16.5 inside. Came in up wind. 15yrd shot hit him a little back. Waited an hour before I followed him. Caught up to him laying down. Try to sneak up on him to put him down for good but off he went.Let it go for another half hour.Caught up with him. He was about fifteen yard above me. Put him down for good. I'll have a pix in day or so..Very cool. Great morning to be in the woods.
Going out in the AM with ADK Ken to see if we can't have some luck. Sounds like its gonna be warm again. Saw a fisher last time, hope to see a deer this time........
See you there in about two hours Ron...
Good luck guys  I'm heading out in the heat :banghead:
It has been very slow in Allegany County. The deer and I don't like all this warm weather(but at least I still show up in the woods!). Any bear sightings? They seem to be all over this year, but I have yet to see a track on my hunting grounds.
Its starting to heat up around here, seen a nice 8 chasing a doe,the doe came right under my stand but the buck was just out of range.Theres some big rubs all around one of the stands I hunt,Just have to put some time in...Good luck to all....ED
Bowspirit has a story to tell.........
A buddy and myself are headed to Allegany State park end of next week...going to rent a cabin around Red House. Anybody got some help for where to hunt from there?
Don
Ed good to hear from you good luck to you..
I hope Sat am is good.
It'll be warm but with Rain later in the day foretasted I think i may have a chance...
Charlie

No problem tuck, awesome pic, I agree.
Now, out with the details...
Good to see you back Shawn.Glad all is well.
Awesome!!!! Lets hear the Story! I didn't see any deer this am. Great morning though. A friend of mine had a n eight point buck run off a six pointer. He sits about 100 yards from me.
Kind of a bitter sweet day. Up in the stand at seven.Nice north wind.Put some james valley out on both sides of me before I went up. New stand site pinch point between two bedding areas.Just before nine had some does come in. As they where coming into the stand you could hear them crunching on the acords that was cool. At ten yards the lead doe looked right up at me. I did my best to hind behind my bow. It worked she step to my left went behind an oak. When she came out on the other side I let it go. I hit her a litte back but was sure I got liver. She ran off about forty yards. I could she the entrance wound and it looked go.Then she just walked off and the other does follwed.I figured I would give her an hour or more I was in to sitting all day. I was watching to the east cause thats the way the doe came from. had a couple more does comee in but got spooked and headed to the south. I continued to watch to the east think thats the way the bucks would come. Then just before Ten I caught movement to my left. Antlers! Grab the bow turned in the stand. He was rackin he's antlers on the over head branches of a hemlock tree.I could see he had at least three on one side which made him legal for this area. He came out about five yards and put one right in the boiler room. He took off and my knees just about gave out.I sat back down and replayed the whole morning in my head. Two deer in one day, cool.I waited about an hour got down. Collected all my stuff and went looking for the doe. Found good blood at first but then it just stopped. Did a couple sweeps of the area But nothing. Crap! So I started to track the buck. Follwed him for about fifty yards and found him laying down so backed out a little and was watching him.I figured I cold sneak up on him and put him down.Nope he got up and started to walk away.I let him go for a half hour cause there was good blood and figured he be dead. I started to track him again and was into it about a hundred yards when I lost the blood trail. I just happen to look up on the cliff and there he was standing there. So I put another one in himHe took off like a shot and I heard him crash.Went up in to get him and thats when I got a good look at his head gear.Took a couple pix dressed him out and went back to look for the doe. Spent the rest of the day looking for her no luck. Bitter sweet day..
Hey Tucker sorry to hear about the Doe but congrats on the buck
Way to go Tucker, I have had some bad luck myself
AdkKen,Bowspirit,Cyclic-rivers and ron w had a good AM hunt today,3 out 4 saw deer and it was a nice day to be out. No shots but still a good day. Even I saw a deer, which is un-heard of.
I had an exciting afternoon hunt, I had two bucks and a doe all at different times and all under 15 yards all of them caught moment when I was about half drawn. Oh well that's the way it goes, I'm not going to force it, my chance will come.
I dropped the string on a turkey today....but I missed left by about two or three inches. I was aiming at the base of her neck...I let loose and she stood there as the arrow flew passed her. Then the rest of the flock stood there looking at me....and I had left my quiver where I was seated when I called them in, so no second shot. Boy, I got GOOD penetration on the cedar tree though!! It claimed my razorcap, but the arrow survived.
At one point I was less than five yards from a dozen birds, all purring and soft yelping and trying to figure out where the other turkey(me) went.
Awesome afternoon.
Anyone hunt today????? The "Rutting Moon" is high in the sky!!!!!
I was wondering if the "switch" has been thrown.....
(I spent the day raking leaves. :( The town vacume truck is due any day now)
Going out on Tuesday, to much to do today. Gonna give it a hard AM sit and see whats going on. The bit cooler mournings should be good for some deer movement...I hope!!!
I just got back from an afternoon hunt on state land. I saw a plethora of squirrels, heard a couple run away from the down wind side, and heard the yotes singing to the moon. Not a single deer sighted.
Gonna give it a try on Long Island Tuesday. My cousin has been gettin' alot of action in the Speonk area. Wish me luck...... Hunting the sandy flatlands of The Hamptons should be interesting.
... mike ...
Deer are starting to move--unfortunately, the moon is full. Lot of rutting will take place at night, I fear. This next cold snap should really get things going!
QuoteOriginally posted by ron w:

Ron it's only Mourning if you let it get you down! ;) I find it hard to mourn while hunting, not saying it can't happen but...
Good luck. I had a great time Sunday, lets do it again.
Sorry about your Doe Frederick, it can happen to all of us.
The rut will turn on any day now like a switch. bucks are starting to move and make scrapes. Had a friend watch an eight chase off a six.
Well I hunted in Cuba with a couple friends over the weekend and got a nice doe. The shot was 15 yds and quartering away a little . The blood trail was awesome . Here is a pic. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/drewsbow/campdeer001.jpg)
huntryx,
Actualy, over my 30+ years of hunting it seems that I see more deer during the daytime when the moon is full.....
Nice Doe Andrew! You look surprised in the pic, I'm sure she was a bit more surprised when she felt the prick on her side.
WAY TO GO Brother Drew!!!!!!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!! :clapper:
What kind of bow are you using this year?????
Good On Ya Drew!
... mike ...
That's a nice Allegany Co. doe, Drew! She wouldn't be from my stomping grounds in the Hanging Bog would she?
Nice going Drew
Good job Drew..
Congards Drew
Had a AM sit, real silent in the woods today, not even tree rats. Was a mild mourning to sit but no activity. Still acorns on the ground, some deer sign but not alot.
Got a new game cam from Ken the other day. I decided I would put it on a trail that I thought had some potential this morning. As I was picking out a tree to hang it on( also where I am going to hang my ladderstand). Something caught my eye to the left of me. There stood a beautiful 6 pointer at about 30 yards, looking right at me with that challenging look in his eye. We had a moment. Needless to say, I didn't hang that camera. The stand goes up tomorrow and I take the rest of the week off from work! :bigsmyl:
Thanks guys .
Heath: she was from around West Clarksville.
Chuck : I'm shooting a whisperstik mojo stik recurve , 42#@28 very sweet bow.
Brian: good luck and hang in there you will get it done , be patient . Drew
Well Brother, It certainly looks like that "stick" has some MOJO!!!!!
Congrats Drew! Your bow and arrows look shorter this year.
;)
This season the bucks in our area seem to be real receptive to grunt tubes.
I saw the first buck of the year tending to a doe on wednesday. Yesterday, I saw three bucks, two does (one buck was trying to get between a pair but kept getting chased off.) The woods in my area will be swarming this coming week. Good luck all!
Couldnt hunt yesterday but as I was walking the dog along 787 I saw a mess of bucks, at least 4 probably 5 chasing a doe.I got close to 2 twin forkies but couldnt count points on the others.
Sunday I did hunt and saw a nice 8 in Rennsselaer Co. but I couldnt grunt him any closer than 45yards.He finally lost interest and wandered off.He was seriously birdogging a trail. If I had a climber I would have positioned it exactly on the ridge he came from but I was stuck in the old ladder stand.Ill be buying a Summit this week.
morning guys hopefully this weekend theyll be coming outta the wood work LOL
Sat last nite as they combined the corn and did have some come out at the end but to far for a shot. They didn,t finish the corn till after dark so Im sure there was others in there. . .
good luck
Hunted today from 7am till noon..... NOT EVEN A TAIL!!!!!
Woke up this morning to a good hard frost, the first one we've had yet. I kinda figured it would be just the thing to get thing jumpin' but I guess not. Anyone else hunt today at not see anything??? If you did see something, what was it and what time did you see it???
(BTW, I did see about a hundred squirrels, but apparently they're not fussy about when they scurry about)
A guy I know saw 23 deer walking in a single file line this morning. Some bucks mostly does. I saw nothing but a bird hunter and a grouse. My friend also saw a buck while leaving the woods this after noon.
Well, At least SOMEONE saw something!!!!! ;)
Hunted near Freedom, NY last week. Saw a big 8 pt. from my stand a long way off. I climbed down, moved closer, and grunted at him. He came on a line from 150 yards to within 15 yards. If he goes right I have a clear broadside, left no shot. Guess which way he went? Tried to find an opening, passed on an iffy shot through a hole
through some branches.
My buddy saw him out of range chasing a doe two days later at 2:00 pm. I had a great week saw deer or turkeys everytime out just no shots.
Good luck.
Anyone else hunt today?????
Not me Chuck....I have to wait until I can go somewhere that I will be ok to shoot at a doe. Cant do that locally as per landowner's directions. I have been so bummed with my lack of time in the woods. Guess getting one opening day will do that to ya... :D
i had a doe feedin around at 60 yds. she turned and worked her way outta my life.. oh well, it got the heart pumpin, i thought i was gonna get my first shot with trad gear!
oh, at 6:56am my wife txted me to say there were 3 does in the back yard!! argh!!!
gaff
Going out tomorrow AM in Herkimer.Just scouted a spot about a mile from my house but gonna save it for after work, afternoon hunts.Loaded with rubs and scrapes but very, very suburbanized. The guy who owns it told me he usually doesnt see deer there til late winter but I have seen them cross the road there many times at all times of the year. The guys that work the midnight shift at my job tell me some tales about the size of the bucks they see there in the wee hours so we'll see.
Ya, woodchucker I hunted this morning at my brother's place. It's about 40 miles south of Rochester. I seen a lot of deer moving this morning. Grunted in a spike just after day break and shot over his back and had some doe's go by. Stayed in the stand till 8:00am and then wanted to move to a stand we got on the bank of the Genesee River. Seen a 4 pt. on the way. There is a standing corn field in front of the stand and while walking on the outside edge don't I walk into three bucks chasing a doe in and out of the corn. A spike, nice 8pt and a 5pt. The 5pt was the last one I seen, he came grunting around the corner right into me. I got him at 8 yards. The time was 9:00am. Their starting to move good around here. That was a total of 5 bucks I seen till 9:00am.
CONGRATULATIONS Brian!!!!!!!!!! :archer:
(They just must have been moving in a differant spot than we were sitting)
Thanks Chuck. That was my 2nd Trad harvest, last Tuesday was my first, a doe.
Hey Chuck,
Great to PM with you! Forgot to ask you-Is Butch a trad man or a wheeler? My son and I got out this afternoon. I saw jack, but he got a shot on a spike, not much for blood, dark-30, so we're waiting til the AM. Sold my Griffin this afternoon so I am set on shooting one with the K-Mag. Still waiting for the chance. Ken
Butch is a "wheel man" LOL!!!!! He was actualy the first one of us boys to by a compound.(I was the last holdout LOL) We all shot recurves with aluminium arrows and plastic vanes,Savora and Wasp broadheads,Drilled holes in those beautiful old bows and put Kwikee Kwuivers on them..... You get the picture!!!!!
Maybe..... being as you live closer than I do,you could snatch him from the "Dark Side".....
Hope you guys find the spike in the morning
(before the bears do)
The bears maybe, the 'yotes more likely.
Now that I know I'll work on him (Butch). I'll attack his masculinity and see if I can swing him. Actually I didn't even know he was a bowhunter.
16 trips afeild....have seen one deer!
Too warm for my blood, I can't even get excited about going out again. It will be doe time as soon as it cools off some. I feel bad for the folks that are looking for their first, this weather is no help at all.
Chuck , I been seein some chasing going on , its on brother.
Brian : Congrats on both deer , nice job.
Drew
Hunted about 3 miles from the house last evening and saw a monster 10pt...
Traveled and hour this morning to hunt down in Westchester Co. in a spot most guys would sell their truck to get to hunt, I could see at least 100yds. in every direction now that the leaves are off...sat from before 6:00am till 11:00...figured "it should be an awesome morning"...
DIDN'T SEE SQUAT!!!!!!
That's huntin'
Was busted by a doe and fawn this morning. I think they smelled me! I still have yet to see an antlered buck. It was a little warm today but a great day to be in the woods none the less. I had two great people to share the day's hunt as well. I still have yet to get a deer with a bow. I hope next weekend proves to be fruitful. Good luck with the tracking.
You know Curt, I find it funny how often that happens. I have found great places to sit with tremendous sign and never see a deer. Sometimes I just sit to take a rest and see deer where you would least expect them. Gotta love Huntin'!
WHAT!!!!! Curt didn't even SEE a deer?????
Now that's GOT to be a first LOL!!!!! ;)
(I just guess it proves your only human) :biglaugh:
Congrads Hooper
I havnt been seeing a whole bunch.Watched 3 doe move thru about 80 yrds west of me last nite around 4 and was set up closer to that edge this morning to see nothing. My neighbors kid took his first bow kill this morning that was nice and I heard from another tradganger that got a nice 7pt this morning as well so somebody is seeing some stuff
I hope to see something tomorrow. My first hunt in Westchester...
GOOD LUCK Jamie!!!!!!!!!!
We looked for Sean's (my son) deer, but no sign. Found the broken arrow last night 40 yards from the shot. No blood on it, no blood on the ground. It was a bad shot, 1/4ing toward him, he's only 20 and new to archery. I think he learned a lesson. I told him he will probably shoot that buck during rifle season.
As for me, I had grand designs on hanging a new stand today in a different spot, but ended up tearing out a woodstove, building a new hearth, and hooking up a new stove. Not much meat generated, but quite a bit of heat. I can't take giving my hard earned money to the oil company.
But come the snow you sure will be warm. I know we added a pellet stove last year and it sure was the best thing to cut cost to the oil kings. I was out in the morning for 3 1/2 hours and not a things moving, was warm and clear with sunny skies. Still not seeing a lot of the scrapes or rubs in the area.
Can't get out today but going Tuesday. Always liked the time around Veterans day, deer movement "used to be good" around this time...we'll see tommorrow!!! Hopefully Wed. also...
What are you guys doing with this warm weather? Hunt closer to water? It stinks the weather was cold I even heard a buck snort wheeze in a brush lot. Now I think theyll rut at night but you never know maybe I need to go sit next to a creek.
Had a good morning this morning. My wife told me we only had a roast or two left and that I needed to get a deer. She is very specific that I'm not to shoot a big buck. I'm a very obedient husband. I actually had a nice 8 pt within 35 yards and moving my way when I shot the spike that was 15 yards away and perfectly broadside! The buck was probably a 2.5 year old and only had 6" G1s and wouldn't hit 100" total so he needed some time. He was scent checking the two does in the field this morning. My new TimberHawk Falcon T/D longbow went into automode and knocked the top of the heart off the spike. He ran down hill (of course)and died within 35 yards. He is a nice heavy deer and will be great eating. Just as I was getting ready to get down a large mature doe starting moving my way. She went to the EXACT spot where I'd just shot the buck and stood perfectly broadside while munching an apple. I thought my lovely bride will be really happy with the young buck and loves to eat a doe as well. I couldn't stop the longbow from reaching full draw and it sent an arrow just where I was looking and the double lung shot put her down within 25 feet of where the buck was laying. I had them both field dressed and in the truck before 8:15 AM and I made it to work by 9 AM. My wife was happy with the meat hunt! I still have a DMP tag and will be heading to Indiana on Thursday. I hope my longbow keeps shooting as good as it has. Has to be the bow, because I'm a lousy shot.

Congrats to you Jeff. Awesome buck my friend.
Nice buck....
I had a good afternoon in Wsestchester. Stalked to within 30 yards of a some turkey. I saw three bucks and two does. None were close enough for the shot...thats ok. I love the woods down there.
Thanks Greg.
Jeff, Terry-congrats to both of you again. Made my night.
Jeff That's a nice one. Especially for that area!!! Can't wait to make it down for the stump shoot.
Good luck in the Morning Ron, Those deer have to start moving any day now.
Terry, now that's one heck of a morning, bet you were on cloud 9 at work! I would have had to take the day, might as well since I wouldn't be able to function. In fact my boss would probably just send me home from gabbing too much about how well my morning was.
Way to stack them up Terry! That's a great picture.
I hope you southern tier guys leave a few walking ! I'm headed back to Allegany County tomorrow night for a couple weeks, to be with family over Thanksgiving and of course hunt deer on the family property.
Holy Cow Jeff! That's a nice buck. Ya can't be my hero this week cause it's Terry. Gotta wait for next Sunday. O.K.? ;)
... mike ...
Way to go Jeff.He is beautiful..Good time to be in the woods..That is so cool..
Way to go Terry, but you're not fooling anyone, we've seen you shoot bud
Real nice Jeff
Jeff, awesome buck! Congratulations! Since Mikey won't make you his hero, will you be mine?
Curt, I know its only a matter of time before a great buck and story shows up from you! If a buck gets within range of you, we know the end of the story! Not a better shot around than you! How's Cade doing, I bet he's chomping at the bit for you to take him hunting!
Thanks for the nice comments everybody.Mike, you've gotta deal. ;)
Got up in a small oak with my LW handclimber in a travel corridor between bedding areas yesterday morning.About 6:30 a doe walks up from behind me to my left at about 25 yds and heads straight out in front of me to feed under an oak at about 40yds.I make a couple doe bleats but she couldn't care less and after a few minutes wanders off.Just as I'm thinking "looks like I'll be going home empty handed again" I look to my left and there he is.He was scent trailing the doe and went right to the big oak she fed under.I make a few doe bleats and he couldn't care less so then I make 3 or 4 buck grunts and he spins around and heads right for me.He goes around this bush that puts him on a trail that'll bring him right by me on the right, and when he's broadside I make the shot at 12-13yds.He spins around and heads for the swamp but only gets 60-70 yds. It's great when you see them go down.
Everything just worked out and luckily they never got downwind, right behind me.The grunt call saved the day and just a few days earlier I called a forky into 15yds. from the same tree.Best of wishes to all of you this season! :archer: :archer: :archer:
Wow!That is a nice 10pt! Congratulations Jeff.
Looks like an Avatar change is due! : )
Congrads Jeff
Slow at work today, able to catch up some on here, congrats to all that have had success!
Jeff that's a great buck!
I haven't gotten out as much as I would like, but I was able to put some meat in the freezer on friday as a small doe stoped at 4 yards quartering away.
I had let her pass once as she walked directly under me but I was waiting for the bigger does to follow her, but they decided to stay on the edge of the woods and not come in, when she headed back to meet up with them I was between them and could see she was the only one I was going to get a shot at.
She ran about 40 yards stopped and turned to see what happened, and then fell over rite there.
It sure is nice when it all goes as planned
I think you're right Terry. That's the 1st deer I got since moving over from wheels and was/am proud of him...I'll never forget that one.
Alright,I can't take all this attention. ;)Looking forward to hearing from someone else with good news.
Your the star Jeff :notworthy:
Congratulations Tim. What time is dinner? :)
Jeff, glad you came back with more of the story. The original post was like they charge you by the word here: "I had a good morning too...got a nice 10pt.I'll try and get a pic. on soon." Jeez!!!
Terry, your longbow done good! :saywhat:
Aram is the new star :readit: :notworthy:
Thanks Aram Funny u should ask... In about 5 minutes :p
Very nice buck,i was able to kill a small 5pt. here in Allegany Co.in Fillmore N.Y.
Congrats guys looks like things are going well. Terry nice shootin and Jeff thats a real nice buck. Keep'em coming. Joe
Congrats guys it looks like the southern zone guys are doing well .
Aram : If your holding out on us you better come clean and soon. Drew
Congrats on the doe,Tim.Nothing like fresh venny.
Whats everybody finding for rut sign? I found a scrape line that goes for atleast 100 yards. I seen a small buck by them so I think he may be the culprit. Either way im going to be in there with my climber and wait for a buck to pass.
Good job Tim..Congrats
I have seen a lot of scrapes, and quite a bit of chasing. I actually just got back from the store, and on my way home saw a big 8 pointer(with a kicker that is almost a drop tine) chasing no less than 6 does and yearlings. I got a pic, but its terrible in a cell phone camera kinda way.
Congrats on the deer Tim!
Tim, do you have any pics of your doe?
Congrads on the doe Tim
I wonder how many we've taken so far on this thread it seems a few... good luck everybody only 1 more weekend till the orange army comes
Jeff, super nice buck congrats, sounds like one of those great times when everything just falls in place, good luck the rest of the year and enjoy>>>>-----> ED
Hard to believe, but I actually saw a bit of action this afternoon. After going to AdkKens secret spot I got up in his tree stand at 1 PM. sat till 3:20 with not much going on. Then all of a sudden theres crashing in the brush about 40 yards form me. Looks like the doe and 2 lil ones Ken and Chris[Bowspirit] have been seeing. They take off wide open and another deer steps into the brush. After a bunch of messing around it takes of grunting up a storm. I think he was making a scrape or rubbing a tree before he continued his chase. 4 deer in 10 min., thats like three years worth...lol....
man i hope ya get a shot at him Ron!!!!! from the look of the rubs by my 3rd stand he seems to be a racked buck. would love nothing better then you or Chris to run an arrow through him!!!!!!!!
Hey nuttsy why don't you shoot him??? I'm gonna be gone for a few days, camp out up there this weekend and put him out of his misrey!!!
Better thought keep him fresh until I can be there to help Drag! Glad you had some action Ron. I Need full details of your Ohio Trip. Good Luck!
I am heading North for Sat. guys but would love to hang on Sunday! I can show and tell my new bow. Yes Ron my new bow, yours will come back as soon as the season is over :archer: Thanks for the help with the season!
Went out this morning from 7am - noon.....
Didn't see a thing, even the squirrels were hiding LOL!!!!!
I know theres a storm front moving in,but the barometer was steady when I left. I really thought they would be moving.
(I shoulda shot that spike opening day) :banghead:
Don't feel to bad woodchucker I too did not see a thing. I hunted from 5:30 to about 11:ooam,in for lunch, heading right back out. Strange, didn't even jump a deer.
Im gonna head out and hang a stand in a pinch point. Having a heck of a time deciding what weapon I will use on the other opener...
Hope to see some turks.
Jamie, Wood and string..It's in your heart..Follow it...
QuoteJamie, Wood and string..It's in your heart..Follow it...
That's the way I'm going this gun season :readit:
I hear ya guys. For some reason I keep having a mental battle with myself...LOL.
Anyway, got my stand hung in a really steep valley(with a stream) loaded with sign. There is thick stuff to my north, thick pines dead ahead. Alot of blow downs in thick hardwoods right next to me.
I walked out clucking every now and then, doing my best to sound like a flock of turkey. I did the same on the way out and got about 40 yards away from a nice little six pointer. Never did see a turkey.
Hmmmmm, Never tried that one.....
(ya know Jamie, There ARE guys with GUNS out there) :scared:
Hi Folks,
I have finally seen some deer on my land out here but no shot opportunities but I did see quite a nice one chasing a small doe so at least I know they are out there. Congratulations to those that are having shooting success. I have a load of work to do before Thanksgiving so I may not get out again but I am hopeful , Joe
You can hunt with bow where you can't go with the gun. Use this to your advantage. Cause the smart deer know this along with the smart hunter with his bow. Let the gun hunter have the big woods.
I haven't been able to hunt the last few days but the bucks have been running wild in Allegany Co. ! I have seen 4 bucks walking in open fields in the middle of the afternoon. 3 runts and a dandy 8 point. I have heard about more from a few other hunters. Hopefully they keep moving for a few more days.
Very Good Point Tucker. Gonna give that a try real soon. Small woodlots or areas close to roads, homes that have heavy cover are Great Hideouts for "smart" deer.
... mike ... :archer: ...
Nice buck Jeff. I cannot discuss my season as I am hunting on the dark side. Shoulders are real bad and more surgery due up on my left one. Gonna give it a go with the RER but have not shot much so gonna have to be under 15ds. for me to try. I am doing all right deer wise! :bigsmyl: Shawn
Congrats Shawn , hope you get yourself fixed up . Drew
Finally seeing some deer.Saw a real nice 8 on Thursday @ 7:45am.Hung up in brush at 30 yards and continued on his way when he didnt see the grunting buck anywhere near my stand.Yesterday I got to use my new climber and saw a buck and 3 doe but all were too far or too brushy for any shooting.5 bucks and 6 doe for the season so far.The only shot was a 70lber that I shoulda shot.Id be eating venison for lunch.2 more days for me to hunt before they start getting eaten up by the rifle hunters.
Shawn,no shame in finishing out the season hunting on the "dark side."Don't hurt yourself any worse, bud. We need you at your best in Feb. ;)Glad to hear you're makin' meat.
Went out to add a lock to my treestand as the traffic in the woods will increase shortly. Two massve rubs and a lrge scrape 30 yards from the stand. :jumper:
Nice new avatar Jeff!
Hunted this AM with Adirondackken, I had a really nice buck within 10 yards. It was till really dark but I have practiced in less light. I wasn't even situated yet and tried to slip an arrow on the bow. I managed to knock an arrow but was still sitting on my tush. Not sure what spooked him, me trying to turn around or my scent but, he jumped about 5 yards sideways and disappeared into the forest. Great experience, a little disappointed in myself for trying to identify movement without getting ready regardless of what it was. ( I thought it was a person! Live and learn!
Another afternoon of JACK! (excluding the turkeys which passed by at 60 yds)
Catskill,
you are welcome to join us at my spots any time you like. we see deer preety often.
This morning all I had was a doe with two young ones and spike buck. Saw a nice half rack tending a doe off the road at about 12:15 and my friend pulled a double on a buck and doe. Joe
Saw a real nice 6 point the other day in Sterling Forest. He managed to keep the thicket between us so I never had a clean shot at him. The setup was good, but he found that one spot where I couldn't get an arrow to him. Still, what a rush being on the ground and having one like that come in....gonna give him another try tomorrow morning...
I did see fresh bear sign on the way in this morning (my sister's garbage was strewn out for about 50 yds.) No sign of him in the woods though.
Well Friends, Tomorrow I head back to work, vacation is "officialy" over. They've already started calling me for overtime, and I'm not even back yet!!! Unfortunatly, My season is probly all but over. No more vacation and I'll probly be working every weekend from now on. It was fun while it lasted, what little there was of it!!!!! I would like to congratulate all who have been successful, and wish Good Luck to those whom I hope will be soon!!!!! I keep thinking of the little spikehorn from opening day. Yeah I know, I should have shot him. I'd have filled my tag on opening day and had a successful season. But it wasn't meant to be,it just didn't feel right. In my mind he is mine, yet his horns do not grace my wall, nor his meat fill my freezer. Many times I could have shot him but I let him walk away. I feel good about my decission, you except that when you let them walk away. In my mind,I will always see him standing just yards away, noseing through the leaves, and the sound of him crunching acorns will stay in my memory forever.
Good Luck My Friends!!!!! :archer:
Just talked to Mike, he is seeing deer. I was going to hunt with him today but my little man is sick with a fever and vomitting.
Good luck to all of you in the woods on this gorgeous day.
Best of luck WAYSIAH.
Well fellas...got out today again in Sterling Forest...what a beautiful day to be in the woods. Didn't see that nice 6 point again but I did have 4 does to mess around with at about 9:30 this morning. I grunted and bleated...really got them going back and forth but the wind was little unsteady. They held up at about 50 or so yards and wouldn't come any closer so I couldn't shoot. After 15 minutes they slowly walked off. If I get out again its gonna be the late season or maybe on Long Island but I've used up most of my vacation time so we'll just have to see. I didn't fill the tag but what a thrill being there on the ground with them...it just never gets old....good luck to you all for the remainder of the season!!
Went out for 1 hour this a.m. self employed but still need to work, saw the most deer ever in one hunt 15, and one was a nice 18'' 8pt. No shots though all deer seen from the stand and he was grunting and chasing the does like crazy, got to kill a doe by friday night or its going to get tough going for awhile. Good luck men.
Had some action but no meat on the pole yet. This still hunting stuff is tough but alot of fun. Worked my way up a deep stream bed to look-see what an apple orchard had to offer when...
Right there is a four point eatin' apples. Guess he saw my head pop up cause he ran right at me. Maybe he thought I was another deer. Well, cover in the way of a shot. Now he is head on at 15yds. Still no shot. I'm ready now. No Shakes, Just Ready. Finally gives me a perfect broadside within 10yds but thorn brush was in the way. Now he winds me as he circles and it's over. Still Alot Of Fun.
Next morning as I step out the back door, two does walk out from behind my tool shed and bust me gearing up. Why didn't I look out the window first? Second time this has happened to me. :banghead:
Gonna spend the next couple of days (and nights) ;) with my wife then head back up to the Catskills Thursday. Might be able to do some huntin' with Jamie then.
... mike ...
I saw a nice buck last nite ,bout dang time, but he was probably 175 yrds away heading away.He didn't quite make it into range of my buddy on that hedgerow before getting the down wind side of him and ending the game.I do hope for at least 1 more outting before I put my bow down and follow the crowd. There is a spot I could hit that'd require me to use my bow during the gun season and I'm sure I'll sit that spot at least once but it's darn near over lets just hope the fat lady hasn't sung quite yet
Good luck to anybody still workin at it
Mikey!!! Drop the String!!! :readit:
G.Fred is having heart palpatations in his office as he pens his new book..."How to Serpentine Through Creek Beds."....Good luck pal...Team Pink
Maybe it's just me...... I don't care for the use of tree stands or store bought blinds. Like to use natural cover and the wind. I'm not knocking other hunting methods (that are way more successful than my own) but I NEED to sneak around and mostly get busted.
My interest is in the stalk. The kill, well, is gravy. Someone please tell me I'm not alone with this one.
... mike ... :archer: ...
I'll give you this Mikey; every once in a while I have to get out of the trees and blinds and have a good stalk. Something where I can move at the speed of slow and satisfy the mountain lion in me.
Once in a while...
Yup I like that stalkin stuff. It's fun no matter how it goes..Mike it will work out..
Everyone needs to do their own thing even if people think your nuts. Stick to your guns Mike, well in your case your bows.
Mcgroundstalker...lol....you aren't alone in that a kill is just gravy for me too but I am not much of a stalker...too clumsy. I only hunt from the ground and also don't use store bought blinds...just what I can find around the spot I want to hunt. Sometimes I just sit real still against a large tree and keep the wind in my favor...I've seen plenty of deer that way and even managed to take a couple.
Mike - I'm with you. I love to hunt that way also. When you do have a close encounter it so much more exciting!
The end of the bow season is in sight. I have to thank the DEC for a less than great season of hunting.( thanks for another year of more gun doe permits )
I also have to say the weather sure seems to have also played a part in not the normal rut activity in the area. In the Delware county of NY, the town of Franklin, when I talk with other bow hunters, it seems the deer movement has been in the dead of night. Guys that have trail cameras out show that most movement was in the period of 1 to 3 am.
Also the deer I have seen was always in that first or last 20 minutes of light. I saw a total of 9 doe, and 2 spike, and 1 4 point buck. But none came within my shooting range of 25 yards or less. I am a natural ground blind hunter, as I have a bad leg and can not climb into tree stand.
So how that I said my piece how would you rate your season ? The DEC ? and the suggestion we start the Bow season on Oct 1 and not give any more prime time away to Black powder, kids and or anyone else.
I agree Bill. On Monday morning I went in before first light. I heard deer in every direction and almost had a buttom buck run me over on the way in. I sat for 6 hours that morning and only saw one doe who decided to bed about 40 yards away from me. Most of the orhter deer that I have seen have been in the last 30 minutes before dark (evening hunt).
I have to agree with sob(sweet old bill) not the other. I have hunted hard and have had much success in the buck department but even in the bow only area I hunt doe sightings are way down. DEC has to start cutting back on permits and start letting ya shoot coyotes year round. I believe the coyotes are ruining our deer herd where I hunt!! I have seen more yotes than does this year. 6-7 years ago I would see as many as 25-30 does in an outing and now I hardly ever see one. I have seen 14 different bucks this year and passed quite a few and only 11 doe sightings all year and I hunt alot. Best of Luck!! Shawn
7 bucks and 6 does.Very unusual for me.The bucks all seemed like it was urgent and they werent having much luck.
November 6th and 7th were the highlights of my season so far....never got a shot on the 6th but had tons of action all around me. The 7th, everything came together. Deer around me all day. Ended up taking two.
I've seen exactly one deer since...a lone spike that never came into range. Maybe with the weather cooling down at night more, we'll start seeing more action.
Weird weather for November for sure.
I've only seen a handful this yr and only 1 in range ....I really hope tomorrow even though I gotta come in here(Im about to leave work been here since 5:30 am)I was hoping for the whole day but things don't always go as planned,I will be out early for the last waneing hours of the bow season
Well it finally came all together and I let them go, in the morning I had a big doe walk into the ground blind but she was in very heavy grass / brush and when I drew I saw movement on her left and out came her fawn, so I let them walk.
After not seeing much of anything my taking a doe seemed to be not the right thing to do.
I went out in the PM and at 325 pm had a deer walking to me, the deer never turned and came within 10 yards looking me right in the eye he was a spike with 9 inch spikes. He got within 30 ft of the rock wall I was sitting behing, the brush was up to his shoulder so the only thing I could see was his head. He then stopped and turned around and went back the same way. Not a shot could be had. Also he sure did not look like he was in rut, no big neck and was not trailing anything.
So I am up and ready to go again, we have light to med rain and the wind is from the south with the temp at 55 degrees.
Alright I've been here at the shop since 5:30 and now I,m headin out for the end of it before the change of arms starts in the morning
Good luck everybody :wavey:
good luck to all with the gun, I will go back to the bow after thangiving rush of hunters is over. I still am not seeing any sign that the rut has come and or gone in the Delware county area and our town of Franklin.
I'm taking my bow today, not only can I shoot another buck but the deer will be moving and it will be my best chance.
was out all day and packed a lunch. a total of 2 shots in the woods today, never saw a sign of a deer. In the area there was maybe a total of 9 hunter, 3 from my place, 4 from up the road from NY city and 2 from the other side of the road.
maybe there was no movement since the weather permit hunters to sit all day in the mid 50's. I moved around from one ground blind to another, most I can sit is about 2 hours and the leg does not want to work, so I move to another blind, they are about 600 yards from one to another...
I sat all day in my ground blind, I had a shot at a doe at 8:00 AM I ended up shooting right under her, I had a ribbon at 20 yards and they looked to be right next to it but things are deceiving when you look through mesh. She was just a tad farther and walking up hill. The only other deer I saw was at 2:00 PM. The sad part was that I heard most of the shooting before legal shooting time :(
Back to bowhunting now.I discovered a humongous rub and scrape line yesterday with plenty of trees for a climber. Not many shots where I hunted so maybe hes stillout there.Ironically, the buck I killed yesterday was only about 15 feet away, calm , broadside and looking away from me.All this after seven buck sightings all more than 30 yards out when the bowwas in my hands.I will be trying to fill my doe tags with the Zipper extreme and back to enjoying myself. The rut is still going strong from what I saw yesterday in central NY.
Not seeing much rutting sign at all, the scrapes seem to be unfreshened, very few rubs, just not much going on!!
We need some Ohio stories pal.Was crossing my fingers for you all.
The stories from Ohio are the same ones I tell in New York Izzy......I saw nothing just like here. I now have 85 hours in the woods and have seen 1, yes 1 deer!!!!!
Man Ronnie, your hunting some good areas.I think you just like deer watching.Thats good stuff too though.
Just like watching??? Do you hear me....I ain't seeing anything. Tough to watch nothing, although I have gotten to know some of the tree rats by their first names.....lol!!!
Ron W you and I must be hunting the same areas. Now over 80 hours in the woods with the bow and or the gun and not seeing much of anything.
I am sure in NY there has to be hot spots with lots of deer. I sure think the current Managment of the DEC,the number of doe permits that are available, seems to be a deer tag for each type of lic you purchase this seems to have caused the overall decline of our deer herd.
I would like them to go back to one buck per year, use whatever you want to take that game, but also you have to still pay for the ability to use that type of bow, BP, rifle, and or next year the crossbow.
Would like them to open the bow season on Oct 1.
Want more days for BP or crossbow put them in the special season at the end of the gun season.
Reduce the gun season to just one week or 10 days.
Does anyone else out there think the deer herd is in trouble ??

Yep. and you can thank Albany and short sighted hunters that think it's a great idea to take 3,4,5 does a year, year after year. Albany only cares about the revenue, and too many of these "hunters" are trying to compensate for something they're lacking in or are short of, if you catch my drift. Anyone who thinks that's a good idea to keep killing every baldy you see just ask someone who's hunted PA for the last 20-30 years how it worked for them. OK - rant off.
New York is a big state and a carte blanche statement about the deer herd is just not applicable. There are several on here that are hunting areas with obvious low density. I on the other hand am VERY fortunate and have access to some very nice agricultural private ground that has ample deer. I need to kill 3,4,5 deer just to help keep the herd in check. The land owner expects me to help him out. I am selective in what I shoot and actually passed on 3 bucks larger than the one I chose to shoot this morning. I could've killed any of the 3 bucks that came in together at 7:03 AM this morning! One was a very nice 9 pt that would probably push 110". He was young and next year will be very good. The other two were basket rack 8 pt and 6 pt. The buck I chose to shoot at 8 steps with my longbow was a spike with a deformed left pedicle. I thought taking him out of the herd was better than shooting one of the bigger breeders. I know the next question is why didn't I shoot a doe. Well, for some reason this area doesn't seem to have a lot of does. Obviously enough for breeding, but not tons. I see more bucks than does. I still have a antlerless DMP tag and may take one if I choose, but I now have my freezer full enough. Still made it to work by 8:45 AM!
It has been a very slow year so far, late rut, warm, not many deer sightings, as far as DEC managing the deer herd... dont get me started..there MAY be some good places left with plenty of deer but the most part i have seen a steady decline in deer sightings and reported take.the bad winters we have had a few years ago and increased tags and tag swapping has left a big hole in the herd.I hunt hard and love being in the woods but id like to see deer and sign of deer more fequently.. hey Izzi , ron , you guys the ones that used to shoot Thursday night Trad league last year??
I agree with Terry, NY is a big state with vast differences in terrain. I've seen plenty of deer this year and passed on 3 opportunities. I shot a decent sized doe on our last day of bow season.
As I look at my mothers land, I can see that it's overbrowsed. It's all forested land with a few fields nearby, but no agriculture. We've done some timber removal which has helped get some more groundcover for the deer to eat.
I don't like to shoot small bucks, so I passed on 2 of them. The other deer I passed on was a small doe. I'll be out this afternoon looking for a good buck (the only legal deer for me right now). There is at least one using the property pretty regularly from what I see as far as sign.
One of the benefits of my mothers place is that there is a decent sized swampy hemlock area that the deer like to use to get away from the local hunting pressure, and for winter food and cover. I never go in there so the deer can have it for themelves. But even here, the hemlocks are bare as far as the deer can reach. All the new green cover gets browsed before it can get established so I don't know how I can get these cover belts reestablished without removing some of the deer.
DEC can't manage the deer on a per property basis. As hunters, we have to be the ones to make the right decisions on what we take and what the land can handle. Where I am, I need to remove does.
I have been quietly thinking that deer may be somewhat cyclical like bunnies and such.Im seeing more bucks this year than doe but close to the same as every other year.My agricultural area is slightly below capacity which is what the farmers want.My big woods are in Herkimer is about the same as last 6 years.More coyotes and porcupine than deer.Im still having as much fun as the 20 doe days.If you remember, back in those days a 100" 8 pointer was a rare creature around here.I think were closer to a healthy deer herd than we were back in the high density days and I think we are on the rise right now.
My 2 cents... My area has "ample deer" as well.. Still get a few every year. No young deer and occasionally i will take a doe. This year has been very slow. Now some areas still have hotspots. However if you want to get a feel for the herd its very simple. Drive around the Southern tier and look in the fields. The number of deer sightings is NOTHING compared to 7 years ago or more. Last week opening day we got a late start and left the house at first light and headed down 390, from Rochester past Dansville. We counted a total of 6 deer, all in one field. Not one deer running across the roads etc... on opening a.m of shotgun. This has become common place. Places where we used to see deer at any time of the day or night have dried up,period. Coyotes, nuisance permits,to manyDmps etc.. have destroyed some of the best hunting around.
Terry, you are absolutly correct. that was a blanket statement I made and I'm sure there are areas in the state that still need every hunter to kill as many as they can, but those places are few and far between. My main point is that people, hell hunters, need to use their heads. I'm not against taking does at all. I took one myself this year. As long as people realize that for every mature doe they take out, there will be 3 less deer to be seen the following year. If people are ok with that then more power to them. What I am pissed about though is the state's willingness to sell extra tags in an effort to raise revenue with what I consider complete disregard for the resource . I was at Wally world last night and found out there are still tags available for my area. that NEVER happened this late in the season before. Let's be honest here. There are people who will kill every animal they can if they can justify it by saying the state gave them a tag so it must be ok, right?
In that last 5 years I have seen way more bucks than does every year. I had a great year this year with 14 different bucks seen during archery, and several were seen multiple times. I only saw 12 does though and only 5 of those were mature animals (not fawns). That doesn't bode well for the herd around me. it seems to be a theme this year too. Friends, relatives and work associates are all echoing similar concerns from all corners of the state.
I'm glad some here have hunting grounds with such an abundance of animals. I just don't think that is the norm and the reason for the disparity is ineptitude if not dam near criminal behavior on the part of the state DEC. Sorry, that's just my honest opinion.
Brent, you won't get an argument out of me for what you are saying. The same thing is happening back in my home state of Indiana. The DNR (DEC) is trying to control the herd on a county by county basis and that is still too big. Besides, I don't know if they actually get their feet on the ground and see what the herd looks like. Seems to me more about how many complaints they get from farmers, insurers etc. They then use that to set the permit quota. The DEC is faced with a difficult problem. How do you manage the herd that has such a varied use/pressure? Heck, within a 2 mile square you can have extremely heavily hunted public ground and also a sanctuary that is over run with deer? I've not been in NY long enough to know what the herd used to be, so I can't intelligently speak on the relative health of the herd. Again, I'm extremely fortunate to have a few good places to deer hunt and for that I am Thankful! Which, brings me to the next point! Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Cherish your time with your family, friends, and faith! If you are able to get a hunt or two in I wish you the best of luck and shoot straight and be safe!
You too Terry, and I want to see a picture of that bobcat when you finally get it mounted. Happy turkey day folks.
Here's a picture of the little buck I shot this morning.

I hunt Hamilton,Fulton,Montgomery, Scoharie,Schdy, and Madison counties. With 87 hours in the woods this year I have now seen 4 deer. I killed a doe this AM on deer management permit, Used a gun. I have not shot a deer since Nov 2000 and that was up north. All I now is I see less deer everywhere I hunt, even driving around I used to see deer in evening and early in the AM and now I don't. I'm retired and spend more time than ever, have PM'ed a few guys on this sight and I know I'm not the only one who thinks somethings wrong. ron w
dang Terry, that's a heck of a spike! You're right about one thing, you are blessed. ;)
Congrats!
By the way Indianabowman...nice deer!!!!!
Ok guys! I was having some fun and yanking your chain. Those are the antlers off of a deer my son shot last weekend in Indiana. You can see from the photo below that they are detachable! : )
His buck was a 140" with 20" spread, my other son shot a 176" buck two years ago, and I have a few others around 150". Just shows why I choose to pass good solid bucks around my grounds in NY. Someone else would get far more satisfaction from shooting them. Not belittling the bucks in NY and I'm proud of any I shoot with trad gear, but dang they can grow some nice headgear with a few years of age.

Terry Behave! :clapper: :biglaugh:
Yes Mr. Moderator! : ) You are right! I better go take a nap again!
Ron or BB just let me know and I'll be happy to have you come hunt with me! Always room for a fellow trad shooter.
This thread got me to thinking. I totaled up my logs that I have kept since 1998 in NY. I have hunted the same areas if that means anything. The numbers are only while I was on stand not walking, scouting etc.. The numbers surprised me.
1998-2009 Bowhunting Log
Average Hours Hunted 41.67
Average # bucks seen 6.97
# does 10.08
# unknown 2.25
Average # deer seen per hour .48
1998-2003
Average Hours Hunted 38.16
# bucks 4.0
# does 8.3
# unknown 2.67
Average #deer seen per hour .45
2004-2009
Average Hours Hunted 45.16
# bucks 8.67
# does 11.83
# unknown 1.83
Average # deer seen per hour .52
I also keep a journal, I did not do it deer per hour but per year. Since 1998 I have averaged 3 seen deer a year. I will admitt most of that time was in the Northern Zone {Adirondacks}. Deer populations are lower up there. There was a time in there{2002-2006} 4 years where I did not see a deer for the whole season, any place I hunted, north ,south , bow, gun and Black-powder.
Ron,
This log is from the southern zone. I have hunted the Northern Zone the last three years as well and seen two deer (both bucks) while in the North Country.
Please stop blaming the DEC.They dont shoot the does .They just issue the permits. Its our own fault.25 years ago if I got a deer a season I was excited....now I average 5 a year.Stop shooting does or stop complaining
Im part of the problem
Best
Bob
I guess I should have included the fact that my deer sights have gone down since I started hunting more in the south. This year most of my outings have been with the bow in the soutern zone. Last year and the year before bowhunting has become number 1 for me. I may have to start bowhunting up north more..lol...
I don't shoot does..... I won't even except a free permit, let alone apply or pay for one.
Can I complain now????? ;)
There seems to be a good herd in my area, I hear guy's complain but I saw more doe this bow season than I remember seeing in the past. We shoot them here, there is only so much feed to go around in the winter, if you don't take them nature will.
Theres a difference between complaining and stating what is going on. I have passed over 30 does, yearlings and 1 1/2 yr old bucks this year. Missed a nice 8 pt. My bow was off ....I am sure some are the same 2 doe groups. I dont think shooting 2 does over the last 10 years is the problem. Of course i have had access to over 10 different spots and killed deer in each.(Maybe shooting 16 bucks is..) 25 years ago there were deer everywhere, in every woodlot, parcel and field.Anyone could shoot several deer each season. Things have changed. I know of several hunting clubs, and camps who have managed and taken only a modest amount of deer year after year who now are lucky to see 2-3 deer per year? I'd rather be a bad hunter in a great spot than a great hunter in a bad spot.
Yes Woodchucker you can complain LOL
"A BETTER WAY
There are three cardinal rules in hunting wild life. Violate them and you risk becoming nothing more than a bloodthirsty butcher of life.
Preservation: Never take the first animal you see. Let it go. The chances are you will see more. If you do not see another all day, chances are your decision to allow the first to go free was a wise one. It is obvious the population in the area is small and killing the first animal may be among the last you will see in that area for many years. Do not be greedy in thinking "If I do not kill this one, someone else will." Do not be lazy by thinking, "Oh gosh, should I continue to tromp around these woods all day? This may be my last chance." Do not rely on government bureaucrat so-called scientific population counts. Do your part to keep a strong population by never killing the first in-season animal you see."
I copied that from a website I visited.
Just because the state gives and sells doe permits does not mean you should whack every doe that walks past. I've hunt Long Island were the deer are way over populated and the taking of doe would be the responsible thing to do. I've hunted Westchester for years along with many friends. And because of the over issuing of doe tags and extra buck tag deer numbers are way down. Westchester use to be a mecca for big bucks now Long Island is. But I know of many hunters on Long Island taking 4 to 6 deer bucks included so far this season. It's just a matter of time before the effects of over harvest will cut the numbers and we'll be complaining what happened to the big bucks on LI.
It really is up to you and what you see in the vacinity you hunt if you need to take that doe or extra buck. For years I called a doe tag "save a deer tag" and would only fill it after I saw the numbers in my area during the hunting season. I haven't filled one in a long time. Thanks to the coyote, roadkill, gun season and hunters taking 3-6 deer, numbers have been on a steady decline.
"What you do to them - you do to yourself."
Lone Archer very well stated ! I usually only shoot one deer a year. I will continue to hunt and if I see a once in a lifetime buck or a wounded deer I will take a second. Every year I get a pile of tags and toss them in the wood stove. By looking at my log the good old days are now !
I actually think for individual's it depends on how things go...last yr I saw lots of bucks and had numerous chance's this yr LOL not so much however overall things are not what they were
It used to be I could drive around my block and see herds of 20-30 several of them in fact adding up to 100plus easy now there's no way I'd see that many in fact I'll go out on a limb and say a fella could drive my 4000 acre block everyday for a week and add up ALL siteings and still be way lower than what was waaaaaaay lower
OK so the herd is down it ain't all bad news...
Age structure has gotten way better because more folks choose to let the little bucks walk than they used to so your more likely to see a big one or 2 now than you would have 10-15 yrs ago
In the 30plus yrs I've been deer hunting around my home I've never found or heard of anybody finding deer that have died from starvation in the winter even when the herd was larger so I'd hafta believe that we are not above carrying capacity at all and we could have a larger herd AND the better age structure that we now have.
Less doe permits and perhaps antler restrictions could get us both the 2nd has been happening by choice now if only the first would as well. . .
ya know limit your take not take your limit
TTT, Anyone still hunting out there?????
Unfortunatly, I've been working almost non-stop,but I thank The Great One EVERY day that I HAVE a job that keeps food on the table.
(my hunting skills sure wouldn't have helped much this year LOL)
I have been trapping with Joe, pulled them last weekend will most likely get out on Sat.
Jim how's the trapping going..
Doing good for our first year.
I'm getting out on Monday Woodchucker...just not sure if I want to go upstate or stay here on Long Island.
I agree with Lone Archer. Just because you can shoot X amount of deer doesn't mean you should. It is incumbent for hunters and angler to manage themselves since it is apparent the DEC would appreciate far less deer than we would like since they genuflect to the wealthy with their Banzai bushes with deer proof fences and the almighty insurance lobby. By filling every doe permit and then some, we are collectively acting as rubes and dupes for the above mentioned groups and agencies.
I take my meat and hunt for a trophy. I pass on many deer each year because I want to see them next year. Instead of donating vension, donate time and/or money to the poor you will feel much better. TO ME, this is a false sense of altruism that works for the DEC. BTW, it was mentioned that no one has seen a deer starving in NY. That can be said for people too. I can say that I have yet to see a starving person that is devoid of mental defect and/or criminal conduct with NY's generous social programs. I have worked in many extremely poor areas and can say this through personal experience.
I also see the same thing while fishing. Few people eat i.e. bluefish, but they all must give them to the neighbor, uncle, distant cousin instead of letting them go. However, these same people complain when there are none around. More importantly, the same people don't give away the fluke, cod or blackfish to the neighbors.
In hunting as in fishing, limit your catch ... limit your kill and there will be enough to go around.
Just my 2 cents.
Ill be out in the morning and this weekend, gonna get out as much as I can.The "honey do" list can wait 'til after the season. ;)
OK I am chiming in. I have shot quite a few deer over the years. I also have come to believe 10% of the hunters kill 90% of the deer. I am not saying the guys that o not kill deer are bad hunters but I believe it may be the amount of effort. I know Tom(Swampbuck)to be a good hunter but he has not had the time in the woods this year to be effective. I on the other hand have hunted everyday of the season except 2 and put my time in. I don't believe encon is at fault and I don't blame the lack of deer on guys like me who may shoot 5,6 or even 7 deer some years. Believe me there are quite a few guys like me. I believe the real culprit at least in the areas I hunt are the coyotes. I know of a couple dens that were found and excavated and there were parts from at least 27 different deer, several cats and even a dog or two found in these dens and all of the animals were believed to have beed killed in the 3 or 4 months prior to the den being found. I too could drive around a one square mile(roughly 640 acres) of my hunting territory several years ago and see 70-100 deer on a summers evening, but rarely if ever would see a coyote. I now take that same ride and see maybe 30 deer or so but guess what, I also see a couple coyotes pretty much every trip. That says something to me. I know we can all point fingers and blame all the guys for shooting all the does or deer or encon for issueing al those permits, but me I am sticking to my guns and blaming the yotes!! I will say this the rut has been better in my area the last couple years because the buck to doe ratio isn't so out of whack and if I can stop shooting these 3.5 year olds I may kill a true monster someday and hopefully that is soon. Oh and Chuck, yes I am still hunting every chance I get both with bow and gun. Shawn
Didn't get a chance to pull the bow back this year on a deer but i was about 50% with deer sigtings. Haven't hunted NY enough to know what the status quo is.
I have personally seen the studies of coyote diet by Cornell, SUNY ESF and another person studying coyotes and their diet at the CUNY Graduate Center, and I can assure you that coyotes don't KILL as many deer as you may think. Telemetry shows this also. There is no doubt they are good hunters and they will deer if they can, but they are also furnished with plenty of roadkill and lost deer by hunters. If they were that successful there would be no fawns left in the woods.
Hunters in NY kill over 222,000 reported deer not to mention the reported car kills in the number of over 30,000. To assume that coyotes kill as many or more than hunters is not realistic. 6 yrs ago NY hunters killed 90,000 more deer.
Hunters are the number one management tool utilized by DEC by NYSDEC and a low deer population causes less problems for them economically and overall.
Proper Land management is also an issue. With thousands of acres of State land that is set aside for public use it should be managed better. Just setting it aside for ever to be untouched is wrong. Its no different than a garden in your back yard. You have to weed it, care for it, and then harvest it and do that on a regular time table. Doing so would create cover and food for a host of critters including deer and small game. Just my thoughts...ron w Thats in the Southern zone and in the Northern zone.......
Thats fine to pass on the deer that you or someone who could really use the venison dont need but if we dont do our prescribed job of culling the herd ,Rosie, Ellen and the rest of the NY PETA folks will start to see how useful privately contracted sharpshooters are.Who knows, since feeding birth control laced vittles to doe is ineffective those 2 divas may spring for the coin to live trap buck and have them castrated!!!After that it will be any other male mamal walking the woods. We may already be on their list. :scared:
I hear ya Izzy! Rosie and Ellen sure don't need intact males! : )
i always thought that it was odd that there are no check-in stations in NY. i live in MA, and when you shoot a deer you are required to bring it to the check station to be recorded. :readit:
i know for a FACT that almost every deer my friends shoot do not get called in.. :( they DO rip their tags, and dont shoot more than the limit alows..( i dont agree with them) BUT, the fact remains that if NY thinks that x amount deer get killed by hunters every year. i bet you could add at least 50%, and that would be your real #.
get rid of the "call in" and make it manditory that you check themm in!
gaff
Reign it in, IndianaBowman.
Let's keep this thread on track so it doesn't get locked down, we still have a lot of hunting time left in the southern zone. It would be a shame to lose this thread :readit:
Stone Knife......very true!!!!!! Snow for the weekend, may make things intresting. Don't know how much but a bit would be nice.
I'll be out in the morning for the first time in two weeks...being sick over a 4 day weekend (last weekend)really stinks!!
Hopefully tomorrow one of the big boys will make a mistake
It would be awful cool to kill a good buck with Miss faith during gun season.
Calling for snow by late morning, so hopefully the morning movement will be good.
Then maybe a snowy Saturday afternoon and morning hunt on Sunday!!
Up and ready to go out. So far it has been a less than super year in the woods. A total of 7 deer that could have been shot at so far, 5 doe and 2 spike bucks. I let them walk. The doe all had fawns with them and the young bucks had about 6 inch spikes. Maybe one of the bigger bucks will be looking for the 2nd rut. I sure must have been sleeping for the first rut, never seen a scrap.
good luck to all. I will have my bow in hand but sure will also have a orange cap and vest on.. for safety sake...
Bill
Good luck Curt, hope your feeling better now
I got lazy and didn't go out, no other reports. Must have been a slow day during the storm....
Ghostdancer, DEC does not want us to know the truth. Coyotes do kill as many deer as I think they do and more. Just take a walk in an area after a heavy snow in in my area and you would see for yourself. Rabbits and other game are plentiful where I hunt, just ask the 90 or so bunny hunters who came to my hunt last year. Coyotes in my arae do not bother with rodents and small game, why when they can eat venison. It may just be the strain we have here, but my bud killed 3 females last week and they averaged 45#s the largest was 52#s and that is a female. We have males going over 60#s and regardless of what you have read coyotes kill way more than ya think. Shawn
Shawn,if you have that many yotes lets get after them with the Foxpro.Get in touch.
So thats why I don't I have a deer yet!
I must've missed something? Reign what in?
Good luck Curt :bigsmyl:
don't really care if I shoot one or not anyhow so it'd be cool to do so with my bow this weekend.
Oct 09 issue of buckmasters has an artical "who let the dogs out" studies show a significant increase of deer hair in yote scat during the fawning season...
Thats part as well as those that don't get reported (50% is probably correct unfortunately)
I do think it's from both cause's and those that do shoot alot like Shawn typically have an area or area's that may be bow only or some other thing where there may be more deer to shoot.I hunt next to a park and have no problem shooting a doe there compared to behind my home just depends on hwere ya are I guess
Anyway I gotta get back to work GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY
Got lots of snow now......and we got time left!!!
Shawn,
I am not trying to be argumentative, however:
I am sorry but there is no conspiracy with the DEC and the researchers. I personally know some of them myself. Besides, it is not in their interest to lie. Most of the researcher are graduate students who are determined to know the truth. Besides, you can get more than 2 civil servant to agree on anything let alone a conspiracy, I can attest to that.
If coyotes killed so many deer than why are there so many does and fawns each year? In addition, why would a coyote work to kill a deer and potentially get hurt when it could kill something much easier. There is a cost benefit analysis.
Besides, I guarantee that hunters are not reporting all they kill. I was in a sport shop several years ago and a guy was bragging that he shot 17 does. He was escorted out of the shop by the owner and called a slob and a few other choice words.
So again, if coyotes are so successful and kill as many deer as hunters, than 500,00 deer a year die in NY plus 30,000 from car accidents ... in total (250,000 + 250,000 + 30,000) 530,00 certainly not realistic.
It is easy to villainize and scape coyotes ... "when after all it was you and me."
Lastly, I have yet to get one with a bow. They are great sport and each time I have failed, I have more respect for the evasive and elusive abilities.
... and each year I have less respect for hunters based upon what I see and hear.
Happy hunting.
Well, Last night I tucked away the "DEERSLAYER" for another year!!!!!(still meatless)
Anyone hunting the "late season"?????
I hope to get out both days this coming weekend for another "stab" at it!!!!!
Going to try to get out this week if the weather is resonable. Going to be noisey in the woods, we had rain sunday and its gonna turn cold. But still better than work.....lol!!
Well Ron, Just look at it this way.....
Even if you can't "see" the deer,at least you'll hear them!!! :biglaugh:
Ron, Still haven't given up! I admire that!
Ps. I didn't get a deer but you know that package I was waiting for to come wed? Well it came today! I think Ken put in two cents at work for me :bigsmyl:
I can't wait for show and tell.
1 old bear
1 old "custom by Corky" which was made in Cali. in the 50's (I think)
and a whole bunch of trad paraphenalia.
Can't eat cool but I don't mind acquiring it. I hope to get out this weekend! I'll have your Mikuta back soon.
Charlie
I have seen a ton of deer this year. I r-r-rifle hunted, and had a great time watching deer almost every day. Didnt find myself wanting to shoot any of them though...I hunted hard and loved every second of it.
I will be heading out for the late season, alternating smoke pole and bow. I guess Im making up for not getting out enough earlier in the year.
Just something about watching the woods wake up...good luck to all still heading out.
Just wondering..... Who has tags left?????
I've got 2!!!!!!!!!! :archer:
I have bow/b-p tags, but I have had them many times before...lol!!
Making a soup for the JLMBH Chuck? I have my Bow/BP either sex tag, and my regular season antlered tag. I gave away my doe permits to very deserving people.
I have tags :readit:
"Tag Soup" seems to be my "specialty" Jamie..... ;)
Boy, have I got a slew of tag recipes from over the years...
Don't forget them Tags are good for the last 4 days of September in the Northern Zone. Chuck you will have to take a road trip.
Hello, I'm new to this site. I did OK this year, I have 2 Doe tags left. But I don't have much time off from work.

I don't understand. do you mean 09 tags are good up there in Sept in '10 ???
All tags intact at this moment. Still hopeful for the weekend.
Pegen, yes that is right. My bud shot a 151" buck in the Dacks in late September with his Shrew this year. Its like winning the lotto but he did it and with a stale tag even.Today I cant leave til 10:00 am but Im heading out with the Griffin.Im dropping off my Christmas gifts for the landowners but when Im done Ill be looking for deer and squirrels .They gotta be real fat from all the acorns they had this year.Im just gonna still hunt and see some country.Ive decided not to kill a doe on this property this year.
I still have four DMPs for 3S (Westchester). Pickins have been rather scarce lately. Maybe some holiday hunting will be more fruitful.
I'll be up there John, You can bet on that!!!!! :archer: :archer: :archer:
IZZY, thank you for the confirmation! I still have my regular season buck tag, one 3N doe tag, and two 3S doe tags left.
It ain't over yet. two weeks left ( counting Westchester)
psyched. I went for a hike on some land that is left pretty much untouched all season. I saw white tails fleeing the scene everywhere in the space of 1 and a 1/2 hour
Good Luck to all you guys for the last weekend. I hope to get out Sunday for my last shot with the bow this year. Then it will be time for some ice fishing.
Yesterday was a good hunt.No deer sighted but had an awesome time chasing bunnies. No shots but I drew 3 time on a couple. Also saw 4 eagles.Looked to be 2 adults and 2 juvies, very cool. The landowner tells me he doesnt think the big 8 I saw was killed as he saw him several days ago.Im probably done for the year but I fel like I had a good season.
I am not done yet. I have one bonus tag left! Cindy asked me what I wanted to do for my B-Day sunday and I said sit in a stand from noon until dark!! I have not hunted with the curve much this year but will carry it sunday. I have had my best year in 5 years, shooting 3 nice bucks with the bow. Sunday will be for another buck but only a nice meat deer. Does are few and far between these days. I hate to dwell on this but just read an article in outdoor life. It states without a doubt coyotes are killing deer at an alarming rate and it is only gonna get worse. I spoke to a gentlemen the other day who has hunted the same 150 acres for 30 years, he says everything where he hunts has stayed constant the last 20 years.Meaning same crops, same hunters, no new homes being built, traffic has not increased, etc. yet deer sightings are a 1/4 of what they were just 6 or 7 years ago. He says the only thing that has changed is that back than they would go all season and see maybe 1 or 2 coyotes, now someone in their party of 4 sees at least 2 or 3 everytime they go out. Please shoot everyone ya see and maybe our herds will rebound. Why eat rabbit when ya can have fresh young venison, that is what the coyotes think!! Shawn
The antler tip overlay on my bow cracked at the lamination. I may be out for a while unless Ron continues to let me borrow a bow until mine is fixed.
Charles I have bows ya can borrow if it will keep ya in the woods. PM me if ya want one and ya can run down and pick it up tomorrow. Arrow to match too!! Shawn
I wish we still had a season up here in the northern tier. The now is too deep to chase rabbits, loose too many arrows, and it is bloody cold a the moment, -7.
Charlie, you can use the Mikuta as long as you need to.I'm in no hurry to get it back.... I have a couple to shoot..lol.I would like it to warm up just a bit,5 degree wind chill sucks!!!
I saw 15 deer today, mostly does. I had a buck at 20 yards broadside but I passed on him. He had no antlers, and judging by the half dollar sized circles atop his head, I think he might be a bruiser next year.
Found out today that a neighbor got a 140" class buck. I have seen one more...
I hear you about the coyotes. I saw six this year while deer hunting. All of the scat I find is loaded with deer hair, one can only hope it is from gut piles and such.
Charlie, if none of their bows work, I have a few too...
Thing is you need to kill over 70% of the coyotes before you can control them.People need to open there land to trappers and caller's.The other thing is to. Just don't let them lay if your gonna shoot them skin them out for sale or get them to someone to use them. They have there place. They do need to be controlled. Don't waste them..
I have seen more deer this year than the past few, killed one meat doe, missed a good one, passed up many shots at other does and small bucks, and apparently others have been very successful too. In addition, my friends have all killed one or more deer with their bows. Yet still, the coyotes are blamed for killing all the deer despite the scientific evidence disputing anecdotal evidence.
Two friends of mine work for Deer Search and they tell me how many deer are wounded and lost by hunters. So, I am certain they fedding the yotes.
20 -25 years ago if I saw a deer after sitting all day I was happy, and there were few if any coyotes then. So, there are many variables at play.
Same thing on the water. The dolphins show up this year for the first time in ages, and the bass fishermen blame them for killing all the stripers and bunker, and were even talking of shooting them. I also had one of my best years there too.
Just my opinion, I am glad to see a healthy functioning ecosystem.
A friend of mine has already trapped 20 yotes this year in Scoharie county...their out there!
No doubt they are out there. I am intimately familiar with Schoharie County.
There is still some very good deer hunting there despite the yotes. However, I have found hunters (poachers) to be more of a menace to a quality deer herd there than the sound dogs.
I was hunting the upper shelf of a local mountain. saw a coyote at 7 AM . too far to shoot. then I had 2 does milling around at 40 yards for about 10 min. I couldn't move closer, though.
It was cold and windy up there!!
Well, this morning I found part of the reason I haven't been seeing deer in my local area in Central Square. Somebody has what looks like a very comfortable tree house back by the corner of my Mom's property. About 6 or 7 yards over the border there is a big bait pile with quite a few fresh tracks. The pile is in one of the shooting lanes they have cleared out. I didn't get a close up look because it is posted.
I would report the bait pile to DEC. call this phone # 1-800-tipp-dec. Thats how you can stop this poacher. Put a stop to those who choose to break the law!!
I would report that baiter as well.I bagged a poacher this year for baiting and and trespassing and after all he has gone through no one will have to orry about him repeating his bs.Law abiding hunters shouldnt have to tolerate that s---!
ronp....all you have to do is give the DEC the GPS coordinates and they will do the rest.
I would report him.
I had a neighbor kill (jack) 7 deer and dump them on my side of the property line w/o tagging any or taking the meat just because I told them not to hunt my stands.
I called DEC (couldn't prove it) but they made their life miserable.
Just had a loca;l poacher get busted with four deer, all does, none tagged. IMO, even worse than coyotes. LOL.
Had three within 15 yards this evening...wish the landowner let us shoot does.
Jamie I have to agree the yotes are just doing there thing! These poachers know better and are hurting our herds as well. Between the two, they will wipe out most of our herd in a few more years if this continues!! Shawn
I agree, two legged vermin are far worse than the yotes, and yes the sound doggies are just doing their thing. I would rather share my land with them than a poacher.
I had a bunch of restauranteers nearby who owned a mere 2 acres of property and who would slaughter the deer herd and turkeys (all illegally with rifles in shotgun county at the time). The DEC was well aware of them and the Encon officer even caught them jacking, but they needed to find their restaurants to test their meat to really shut them down.
I go on ad infinitum with all poachers and game slobs in the woods and on the water that I have run across over the years ... and not one was ever starving.
These type of incidents in this have created far more damage locally to the deer herd, and has truly prevented the herd from growing larger with quality bucks.
Human greed ... leads to the Tragedy of the Commons for all of us.
Poachers have always been around....The coyotes in
the #'s we have now haven't...
You can't convince me it's the poachers that are decimating our herd.......
Indeed, poachers have always been around, and coyotes are now fairly common. However, I have never seen nor ever come across a fresh deer killed made by yotes in the woods ... ever.
Moreover, collectively hunters, doe permits and venison donation programs (don't want to debate the venison programs) have done a terrific job of reducing the herd from the high levels we had at the turn of the century to levels the insurance lobby and the DEC have hoped for. That is where I have seen whole herds decimated over the years. I have just started to see them rebuild a little at least in areas where I hunt.
Additionally, I am involved a program where bowhunters are invited and coyotes are not allowed to be killed - since it is a private park it is their rules. The coyotes are there, but the hunters are the ones required to reduce the herd each year because it becomes overpopulated if hunting is not allowed, despite the coyotes. This organization is not pro-hunting, they just believe it is necessary to reduce the population of deer to levels that are more sustainable for their forests, and if predators could do it, I wouldn't be hunting there.
In addition, just by the numbers hunters kill over 250,000 deer a year in NY not including all the ones which are lost. As friends in Deer Search tell me it is quite high.
Too many deer is a liability and a burden to the state, but I am not saying coyotes don't kill deer, they just don't kill as many as people may believe especially during the hunting season. They can adequately find a fresh supply of vension hunters have lost or the gut piles.
Just my opinion, my rant is over. To much snow and not enough to do.
In Wi Hunters have been the sole cause of the deer decimation. The DNR issued way too many tags for many years and doing population studies based on the kill. In fact this is the first year they are actually asking about deer sightings and not just harvests. I think NY could be headed in the same direction although not quite as severe.
They just busted a whole bunch of deer Jackers if you look at the DEC website. Over 100! In a lot of areas of NY state you can talk to farmers, They say they hear gun shots every single night. I'm sure a lot of deer are going this way.
I'll agree there are a lot of yotes around and they do contribute to deer populations, mostly on the fawns and elderly like in any predator prey situation. Even though they are not the soul cause of deer depreciation they are still fun to hunt.
I have a few calls if any one is interested in heading out. If you think a nice buck is thrill coming to a call you should see a coyote coming in on a dead run and stopping mere feet from where you are.
Thank you for all the generous offers on bows but realistically I should have my bow back in 3 weeks. Besides I still have Rons Mikuta and it shoots as good as any bow out there. In fact I would buy it if it didn't have his name on it :biglaugh: J/K.
I will try one more time tomorrow afternoon. Have not had any luck this late season seeing deer. I have after 1 to get something done. Might dig out the BP but still want one for the freezer. (that being said if any one accidentally shoots an extra tomorrow  (serious)...)
Good luck to everyone on the last day of deer!
Charlie, if your in need of venison get me your phone number.Im good for coming up with a roadkill every couple of days and most of the fellas I usually call are jam packed with venison already.Shame to waste them.
Izzy.... you need to drive more carefully.....
Charles it ends on Dec. 22 you have 2 and 1/2 days.
Keith, driving carefully is no fun and besides it aint my car. :smileystooges:
I ended my season watching a doe and yearling browse. I wont be out tomorrow, baby duty calls.
Good luck to all of you heading out.
Time to assemble some bunny-busting arrows. :saywhat:
Still have until the end of the year, but have not had many fruitful sittings in the stands lately.
Wow fellas thats all she wrote.I had a great season without an archery deer in the freezer.Saw a lot of bucks, gained access to 3 new properties and enjoyed spending some much needed time alone. My only 2 regrets for the season are not hunting from the ground enough and not making more time to hunt with my cousins despite needing time alone.I shared their hunts over the phone but now it just doesnt seem like it was enough. Now is time to chase the little critters and get ready for pigs at Rays in March. Its also time to start anticipating next years deer season. :banghead:
.....and to all a good night!!!
im sad its over, but in the same breth im glad as well!! same as you izzy, no archery deer for me.. my goal was "a shot with the bow".. and i didnt get it. i guess its bunnys in feb. and turkeys in may..
