I wanted to do a quick introduction and thank everyone in advanced for the knowledge and help that I will find here.
I recently got the itch to get into traditional bow hunting. I've hunted and fished most of my life but have never shot a bow before. I've hunted with rifles, shotguns and revolvers. My brother picked up bow hunting this year and bought his 1st, a Bowtech Admiral compound. I guess I'd rather do it the hard way!
My goal is to pick up a bow this fall/winter and practice for a year before heading to the timber next year.
Any tips or pointers that you can give would be much appreciated. I'm sure I'll have several questions as I get into the sport.
Thanks again!
I would like to be the first to welcome you here.
There is a tremendous amount of experience, information, and comraderie at the "Gang"...
And, this is the place to find a bow to get started....

Welcome Matt enjoy the journey.
You've found a truly great group to join! Welcome!
First tip? Don't "overbow yourself" i.e. starting with a bow that is too heavy for you to pull to your anchor point! 40-50# wouldn't be too light to learn perfect form. You can even stay at that weight to legally hunt most game animals in most states.
1). Start with a reasonably low bow weight.
2). Keep equipment very basic.
3). Have fun!
Make sure your arrows match your bow. Nothing is more discouraging than wobbly arrows. Don't know how close you are to a trad shop, but get some face to face help when figuring out the correct spine.
welcome and if anyone says this is a great bunch of folks, that is an understatement...PR

Deal with tradgang guys. Bows/arrows/knives, everything. These are a good group of guys.

Welcome!!
The search feature has a vast amount of knowlege. If you dont find it there then post up. You'll get plenty of responses to your specific topic.
This helped me out alot. Follow it when seting up you bow/arrows. http://www.bowmaker.net/index2.htm
Also, field tip test point kit sure helped me tune my arrows.
Once I got my arrow/bow tuned well, I found that it was more forgiving to human error (form, release, anchor) and still able to shoot good groups.
Good luck and most of all, Have Fun!!
Welcome!!! You've come to the rights site, you won't find a better group of people anywhere!!
Check out the classifieds to get great deals on a bow and all the essentials you'll need. As others stated, start out with a lighter poundage bow to learn good form and become consistent you can always sell or trade it on here for higher poundage when you're comfortable with it. Not knowing your size or stature it's hard to give you advice on poundage but I'd say around 40 - 45# at your draw length would be a good place to start.
Welcome Home

Wow thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I didn't expect so many responses! I have a feeling this is going to become very addicting (same as my rifles, revolvers, bass fishing gear and Bark River knives). Guess I have one more thing contending for my paycheck now! :D
blind one - I'm located in Bloomington right now, but get down around the Springfield area often (still have family down in that area) and also down further south around Breese (wife's family is down there). I hunt Pike Country however. So I cover a good portion of the state.
Welcome and my advice would be to buy a cheaper bow to start out with and you will figure out what you like.

That is some darn good advice right there. I can add try not to get discouraged if it doesnt fall into place right away, it takes time, practice and patience.
Welcome
