Title: String and Arrow selection help
Post by: Co.Archer on October 12, 2009, 01:00:00 PM
Hello everyone, I just got a used, old longbow and it is a 51# and also has 64" on the handle. Does this mean the bow needs a 64" string. No string came with the bow. string selection and arrow selection help would be appreciated.  Thanks, Bill

Generally a longbow would use a string 3" shorter than the length marked on the bow,so 61".Get one made of b-50 Dacron. The newer fast flight strings can damage older bows, not built for it,so Dacron is the way to go.

64" is measured from tip-tip along the belly of the bow if I not mistaken.

As Jim stated, LB's usually have 3" shorter string length that the lenght of the  bow.

There are some string makers in our sponsors.  They can help you out on exactly what you need.

As far as arrows, if you are draw lenght is 28".  Maybe some 2016 alum. will be a good place to start.

Some more info. will get you closer to what arrow you need.

Your draw length?
How close to center is the bow cut?
What type of arrows? (wood, alum., carbon)

Good luck!

String nock to string nock across the belly.  And, fastflight won't hurt most longbows...even selfbows.
The old linen strings they used on selfbows years ago had very little stetch.  Which arrows you use will depend on weight at the draw length, tip weight, and amount of center, etc.

Willis, measure from the nock groove from one end to the other, on the back. What make or model is it? 64" could be the tip measurement and maybe not. This info will help. Good shootin, Steve

Thanks for the input, I'll get a string for my bow and then get the data to start with my arrows.
