I got a bit lucky this morning on a little 5 pt. I packed in my climbing sticks and tree saddle to the back of the woodlot and finally got set up in the tree about 45 minutes before light. At around 8 o'clock I saw the back half of a deer for a split second on the edge of a corn field about 45 yards away through the trees. I gave one grunt and he walked down the edge of the woods toward my tree to investigate. Not seeing anything, he turned around and I thought he was going to leave the way he came. Instead he cut into the woods and walked by about 18 yards out. After some gymnastics in the tree saddle, I gave a mouth grunt to stop him. There were some leaves in the way, but I thought I could make the shot so I drew, released, and heard a loud "crack". The shot looked low and the buck jumped a bit so I thought I hit him right in the front leg. He stopped about 24 yards out and since I thought I wounded him, I hurried up and nocked another arrow. I had to thread the needle between several trees and branches and fortunately made a good shot the second time. I'm not sure what happened on that first shot, but it turns out I just gave him a little nick in the front leg and buried my arrow in a log. The second shot was a little beyond my comfort zone and I probably wouldn't have taken the shot if I had known the deer was fine. But, thinking I had wounded him I took a desperation shot to try and get another arrow in him. I didn't know if, or where, I hit him on the second arrow but I watched him wobble and tip over about 45 yards from my stand on the edge of the corn/woods. I still don't know how I got that second shot off through the cover, but I'll take it. I tagged the buck, called my buddy (agross1) to take some pictures and help getting him out of there. I had to go back home for my camera and I left my bow in the car when we went back out to retrieve him so I didn't get any pics with my bow out in the field. It's a Quinn Stallion, Carbon Express Heritage 250's, and 125 grain Snuffer.
This where he tipped over:

Thats a dandy of a buck, congratulations!!!

Thread the needle, through the heart, nothing but net!
Not bad at all for a "desparation" shot.
Congratulations on a job well done!

Great (second) shot Jeff. I love watching them tump (thats a KY word) over. Looks like you need to expand your idea of your kill zone. How many bucks can you guys kill up there in a season on a state tag?

Thanks guys. After finishing last bow season empty handed, I'm pretty happy to have one already this year. I think Oct 10 is my lucky day since I shot my 1st with the recurve on Oct 10 two years ago.
We can kill two bucks total with with any weapon, but you can buy lots of over-the-counter doe tags. I usually buy the combo tag which is includes a tag for any buck and a restricted tag for a buck with at least 4 points on one side. That way I can shoot two bucks with a bow. Otherwise, I think you can buy an archery tag and a gun tag separately.

If I remember right the first buck you killed with that bow was a GIANT. Congratulations on a great shot. Great way to be thinking in regards to the second arrow.
