Title: Kansas Gobbler Down
Post by: K.S.TRAPPER on October 09, 2009, 07:14:00 PM
My trail cams have been working overtime lately getting plenty of pictures of turkeys. Looks like it was another great hatch around here.

It was a great day to be in the woods, Light winds low 40's and quiet, very quiet.

That was until the gobblers flew down up on the ridge just out of sight. The minute they hit the ground they started fighting, purring, clucking and gobbling. Then the hens started in just down the hill from me and they really got to going. It probably lasted for a half hour or better.

Soon after the calmed down some this is what popped out in the clearing, blurry pick sorry. They were on a mission and blew right by me so fast I never had a chance for a shot.

30 minutes later 3 more showed up heading the same direction. I got a quick pick of 2 of them both jakes and following them was a nice gobbler.

I was going to be ready this time so I put the camera down and got ready just in case.

The long beard walked right into 15yds and offered me a nice shot. When the arrow hit him it knocked him over backwards, Wow!

He got to his feet and started running away then jumped and started flying. Dang it man!

Luckly it didn't last long and he only went about 40yds and hit the ground running again. I could tell he was having a hard time of it and I soon heard a crash and wings flapping soon after he made into the woods.

Just to make sure I called my son and had him bring his dog up to help if needed. This is the second bird I have shot that went air born and it took alot to find the last one I didn't want to do that again if possible.

It was a good thing we had the dog because there was no blood trail to follow at all. We put Abby on the trail were he landed and she was on him in just a few seconds.

He had died soon after entering the timber right were I heard the last sounds.

Curt(Guru) has been telling me for years to get a string tracker and I believe him I have just been to lazy to buy one.I think I'm going to give Mike a call up at the knocking point this week and see if he has any : )

Nice bird Tracy. Remember back 20-25 years ago when You couldn't find a Turkey in N.E. Kansas. Now You can't go in the woods without seeing Them.

About every other time I drive by Dale's house I have to stop and let them cross the road.

Good luck with the rest of Your season.

Thanks guys, I sure had alot of fun on this hunt    :bigsmyl:

Shoot Brett, When I first started hunting this place 18yrs ago there was no turkeys at all around there. I see turkeys almost every day on the way into work I love it.

I was shooting a 52" cascade bow, carbon arrows and Wensel woodsman's.

Awesome...I hope to see one this weekend while deer hunting, I have a fall tag and a score to settle.

How do you like that blind?  It is one I'm looking to get.

Congratulations Tracy...

All the turkeys must have moved south... Not seeing the flocks up here that I used to see.

Not this time Frank   ;)

Josh, I have a couple of the blinds and I really like them, I wish the door zippers were a little better but they work. You can't beat them for the price.

I'm working on a  bigun John   :goldtooth:  I missed him opening day but he's still there and he has a buddy with him that will do just fine also.

Thanks again guys

Tracy
