Title: Ghillie suit and cornfields?
Post by: Bob Stager on October 08, 2009, 07:46:00 PM
I was wondering if anyone has had any luck using their suit in a cornfield. I was thinking of getting in about 6 to 10 rows and see if I can catch them walking the edges.I was also wondering how much you have to cover your self with cornstalks. Thanks  Bob

Bob... I've been contemplating that very thing. My plan is to sit in the first row and watch up and down the edge. If one shows up traveling the edge, I'll drop back a couple rows to wait for the shot.

I'm not going to cover up with stalks at all. My experience is that the suit fools them every time all by itself.

Charlie  I think you are right on.  I am totally impressed with mine.  I think that is a great way to do it.

I would imagine the ghillie would work great by itself. I've seen enough bushes/weeds growing in cornfields that you'd probably blend right in anyways.

If you don't have a ghillie use carhart tan overalls they blend in as well.

natural Corn Field Blinds are a major tool I use while hunting. I have had much success this year with getting them in close.

The first row you snap/bend them down about knee height. Each row you go back, snap/bend them of about 6"-12" higher. Works great!

I didn't use ghillie suit but last weekend I set up 4 rows back in the corner of a corn field. I bent the stalks over in front of me. I had two fawns walk right past me at the edge of the corn, so they were maybe 10 feet away. The only bad thing was I didn't see them until they were right in front of me. I also had a spike work it's way along the fence row toward my corner but he fed out into the hay field before he came within range. I'll definitely do it again this year.

I hunt in the corn till they cut it down. I carry about 6-8 of the small bungies that are used for tarps. The kind that look like a loop with a ball on them. I use these to tie up corn to make a blind and clear shooting lanes. No corn gets damaged...remember, the guy who lets you hunt in his field makes his living on that stuff. I also wear a guillie jacket with no sleeves but it's not necessary. I carry a small plastic stool to sit on.

yes, do it! Cornfields are my favorite! People scoff at fields of corn around here. They say, "once the corn is out, hunting will get better'. My opinion hunt near the corn, grassy ways, fencerows in between fields, I like being sneeky. IT'S FUN!  :bigsmyl:

Oh, and if you want to try something cool, put a step ladder a few rows in, and set in a travel area! Good shootin, Steve

I love hunting standing corn and have taken quite a few deer that way. I have my best luck when I make my set up so I am shooting across the rows rather than down between the rows. I get about 5 rows in and just tear a few of the leaves down for a small shooting lane. Deer never pick me off when I do this but I have been busted many times while trying to shoot down the rows as a deer is passing by.
Also, you must have your bow ready because they are in and out of your shooting lane quickly.

The problem with the fields I'm hunting in and around, have been twin row planted. Makes it pretty tight to manuver thru.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure I found one of them there "crop circles"! So how to get the Aliens to put them in the proper hunting spots?

 Good shootin, Steve.

It works but can be hard on your nerves; the deer can get REALLY close:^)

The ASAT Vanish Pro 3D Leafy suit is phenomenal in corn. I've been bumped into by deer wearing mine in a cornfield. Ghillie suits are fantastic in most situations BUT the ASAT suit is more compact to pack and carry, lighter and cooler to wear in warm weather, and also incredibly effective camo.

Curttiss, I just recieved my new ASAT 3D last week.  When I saw this thread, it came to my mind right away.  It really is some good camo, and I bet it lives up to its name in corn. VANISH

Just wish I had some corn to try it out on!!

I haven't used a Ghillie of Leafy Suit in corn, but I have experienced both in action in tall grass and sunflowers in MT.  Based on my experience I can assure you that if the wind is right, the deer will walk right past you at only feet away.  The challenge comes with drawing your bow:-)!
