Title: Will this setup take hogs?

I have never been hog hunting, but am inspired to try it, face new challenges and all that. I'll make this quick -

66" Pearson Javelina, 40@28, draw ~31
600g total arrow weight, 200gr up front
4 bladed magnus stinger (razor sharp, love it!)

31" draw, figure I am shooting 45-50 lbs. So 600gr is like 12-13grains per pound. Slow, but quiet and deadly   :)  

Is this double pass through material? Or am i under-bowed? Like most, I prefer shots inside 15 yards. 20 yards is a long shot for me.

I would say yes, but I would be tempted to switch to a two blade broadhead.

Ive shot alot of hogs and some with less than that.I shot a 200# boar 3 weeks ago. 51#@31" 558grn. arrow with Magnus 2 blade.I shot him in front of the right shoulder and came out just in front of the left hip.Dont worry.Just go hunt'n

Looks like some two blades are in order. I'll take all the penetration I can get I suppose.

2 blade magnus stinger or 2 blade zwickey? time to search

With that heavy of arrow there is no reason to change broadheads.I would stick with the stingers.They are small and the tiny bleeders will not hurt anything and may help.jmo

Yep....you are good to go....nice arrow weight and long draw....if your arrows are flying true, you are good to go....

I took this one in early March of this year, using an almost the same set-up.  My only regret was using a three-blade head... I've now switched to the STOS two blade for better penetration.

Remember-there is no replacement for displacement.

that HOG of an arrow you are shooting:  if you were to roll that up into a ball of mass, and let it go from a sling-it would kill at about 10 yds.
You have attested that your tips are razor sharp-

Yes, there is a point to where your returns are diminished-and you may be getting close, I'm no expert.  

But 15-20 yards, I challenge anything to dodge it once the arrow has been let "go" at that distance.  

Im of the opinion that a well placed shot with that rig and arrow setup would take large whitetail at the same distances.  Certainly hogs.

PS.  at that draw length-you are shooting faster than you might think anyway-your "power stroke" is longer than normal.

I 3'rd fireballs advice plenty to kill a hog but id put a 2 blade on the front and your away

Ditto the 2 blades,,,,if things can go wrong shooting a pig

You might as well get started with the set up you got. Lots of things are bound to change as you progress, and there is more to hunting hogs than the number of blades on your broadhead! Get some animals in front of that bow.

UCB...   I'm in exactly the same boat you are... never bowhunted at all, getting on in years and shoot a light bow.   I'm going in two weeks to give hogs a try.  I'm web paging my whole experience, from the decision to go though my prep, bow problems, etc., and will, of course, add to it with the story when I get back.   I was planning on using a 32# bow, but got myself in gear and built two new ones for the trip... 38 and 42#.    If you want to "come along", the page is at:

Forget changing broadheads. Stinger 4 bladers behave just like a two blade, only better!

I vote hair shaving 2-blades to improve your penetration & more likely pass through.

I've hunted white tail with this set up with decent results (let's say the problems are more frequently on my end, than theirs). On the doe I did finally take, i got a double pass.

I am and was a knife fanatic before I got into archery. I am probably better at sharpening my broadheads than shooting my bow

Time to put some animals in front of this bow for sure. Pics to follow    :thumbsup:
