Title: Bow weight for turkeys
Post by: Prairie Drifter on October 05, 2009, 12:36:00 PM
My daughter wants to kill a tukey this year w/ her new bow that should be here anyday from Maddog bows. It is 20# at her 22" draw. Here arrows will be 23-24". Is this OK for turkeys at 15yds and under? What head should she use?

If you had a properley tuned arrow maybe but I think it might be a little light.
I would also check to see what your state regs are.

Honestly?
No.

I don't think it's even close to enough for a turkey.

sounds to light. Now for me nothing under 35#@my draw. Also check out the state reg's on bow weight.

As far as BH... anyone you would use for deer.

I'm sure it would work on a smaller hen without a problem, might be a little light for a big old longbeard

Our daughter uses a 35# Hill for turkeys, my husband's friend has a son that shot a fawn, that is all he was allowed to shoot at, when he was young with a bow that was 26#s at 22 or 23 inch draw.  The arrow was sticking out the other side of the fawn. You could try to shoot a chicken with some narrow broadheads just to see what you could get.  The guys used to do a chicken hunt with the young ones for their first hunt.  Unless your little one is really good with her bow the chances of hitting one are not that good, but it may be a bit light if you hit a quill or a wing bone.

Turkeys are made up of hard brittle bones, I'm not gonna say you can't kill one with that weight but I wouldn't attempt to let my son try it & he's shooting a little more weight at a longer draw....turkeys are "TUFF"....
