Title: Where did I hit this Deer?
Post by: joebuck on October 05, 2009, 12:14:00 PM
Ted Nugent and ASAT got me thinking. You have got to be kidding?...No I'm not. Ted uses a total white arrow. I like the broken white in ASAT winter pattern. So i took a Griz Stick and sprayed it white then took some acetone and removed splotches of it to give it a broken appearance. We all know reading blood sign on the arrow is HUGE when deciding a tracking plan. Ironically this pic shows my deer didn't make it 10 steps. I really like the way the arrow showed up the blood sign.I think i'm changing all my arrows over to this. This pic is the crime scene..Arrow stuck in the mud after the shot, and dead deer in background at final resting place....She wasn't 12' under me the whole time. (35seconds)  ...question............Where did i hit the doe?....

Im guessing both lungs, and the top of the heart.

Got to be both lungs. Nice blood and she fell that soon.

I would have to say a solid heart shot for her to drop that fast.

Doesn't look like pink frothy lung blood on that arrow.  I don't see any blood on the dead deer.  I am going to guess in the neck   :D

Anyway, one thing I  do know is Roger Rothhaar paints all his hunting arrows full length in light gray auto primer to see them better.

Femoral artery.

Quick expiration means either heavy lungs, heart, or both. A heart shot spews blood from a complete pass through. None here. Therefore, both lungs.

Double lung and artery

I've had them go down like that with several hits other than spine shots. Heart/lung would be on the top of the list. The other was a shot under the spine that cut the major artery leading to the kidneys.....down in 5 yards. The third was a jugular hit on a caribou which went about 5 yards and another on a small buck last season that went about 10-15 yards. In regards to heart shots, it has been my experience that hitting the heart directly puts them down quickly but not as quick as a shot that severs a major artery leading directly from the heart. Femoral artery is similar but the one deer I killed with that shot made it about 35-40 yards and there was blood everywhere but I did not get a pass thru. In addition, some deer get fatal shots and don't even know they have been shot and continue to feed...so the distance the deer travels and the amount of blood on the arrow can be misleading and not correlated directly. The moose I killed two years ago only went 3 steps  with no more than 12inches of penetration....low in heart, low in both lungs, hit off side leg and the arrow came back out on the first lunge.

Almost dead center in the middle of the body.  Half way up and half way between front and rear legs.  Maybe even behind the last rib.  I say this because I shot one there on Thursday, arrow looked almost identical, and it fell in sight.  Thought it was a bad shot for about two seconds until it fell over.

Nice liver shot. I say that because looking at the deer you would see some blood if you hit the lunge/heart area.. I see none. The arrow ( now this is because it's a pic and can't really see the other side of the deer)shows dark blood and with the deer dropping so close and have hit deer like that in the past is why I say Liver shot.

Either way, Nice deer and shot. Congrats.

I had one drop nearly that close from a renal artery hit (kidney) once.  But from that one there was a blood trail about 10" wide...

Kbetts,Mystic and Two track nailed it. Especially Kbetts. Liver, Artery and broke diapharm cavity. Liver blood really is thick and rich. Not as rich as muscle but heavy.....

I'll attempt to post my pic tonight.  With the deer stretched out on the ground, it looks like I couldn't have gotten any more dead center.  This was only my second trad deer although I've killed plenty with a compound.  Cut to the tip  broadheads change "marginal" hits into a bloodbath.

I am thinking double lung and not heart; maybe the liver too; as the arrow shows some dark blood.
Also the angle of the arrow compared to the tracks indicates it was not a total complete broadside but ~slightly~ quartering on- which meant the arrow passed through both lungs; then hit the liver on the other side on the way out.

Personally I have found that deer hit in the heart run like crazy as far as they can. I shot a doe and hit both lungs and the top of the heart; and it ran about 200 yards- and I speculate if I had just hit the lungs; it would have dropped in about 60 yards like most of the double lung shots I have made in the past.....

Kidney shots put them down QUICK, but there is usually fat on the arrow as well...unless its early in the season. I say kidneys.

my guess was an arrow to the liver/lungs either going forward or rear ..... for some reason, a liver hit is extremely damaging to a whitetail and they simply cannot go far when their livers are sliced

I cleaned up my arrow and it's ready to roll again. The white background on the shaft really showed up the liver blood and was even visable from the stand but i was only 15 feet away so of coarse i saw the impact of hit. But painting total arrow white shows alot more "blood sign " than just a white cap. IMO.........Plus it hardly snows in mississippi and if it does, i'm duck hunting

I was going to say liver because A) dark blood, no bubbles. B) I hit a buck like that and it flipped over in 10 yards.

Congrats.
