i am hunting this year with Adirondackman ( John Hemstreet)who is a member here. first let me thank John for all he has done for me and what he is teaching me about ground hunting and reading buck sign. i like to think i know a thing or 2 about reading deer sign but there is no doubt John has forgotten more about bucks then i even know! i am humbled hunting with him. ok enough blowing smoke! John has been hunting a certain BIG buck for a few years now, got a couple glimples of him last year but no shots. like me John only hunts with bow and smokepole so hunting Big Boy is a real challange especially in the swamp he calls home. what John is showing me about the habits of bedding, feeding, reading rubs and sign from a big buck is staggering! this man knows deer, bucks especially! we are RIGHT ON Big Boy now as he has an incrediable rub line that he is CHRUSHING on a regular basias. John also has his bedding down pretty well as well as morning movement. to see him i truly believe just hinges on putting the time in. to kill him will likly be another matter as he lives in a THICK,WET, hard to navagate swamp. this experiance, win or lose to me is more then i could ever ask for, you can not get this from a book! it is something that will stay with me and i will draw on again and again. John is soft spoken but i urge ANYONE with questions about buck behavior or ground hunting to ask John as he is a wealth of onformation! i believe next saterday and Sunday will see us hot on Big Boys track! i will keep this post updated and anyone who has specific questions about how he is reading this deer please feel free to ask. i will take many pictures along the way one of which that is extremly interesting to me is a specific bed that this buck has used a few times which you can just feel he is a wise old man. here is a fresh rub from saterday.

Greywolf
Good luck guy's, Johns a good partner for sure, I could tell last year that he has a lot of experience to share.
Good to see you boys still kicking!! I was wondering how y'all been. You're absolutely right Ken, John is a wealth of knowledge as well as a real good egg. If you guys are hunting where he brought me last year, then you are right, it can get pretty thick!! Good luck and keep after'em. I'll hit you with a phone call this week.
Good luck,
Nathan
Sounds like fun guys. John is a great guy that goes out of his way to help other hunters. The first thing I noticed about John is how well he gets through the woods. The Adirondacks must be smellin' pretty good this time of year. I had a great time with you guys last year. Love to do it again sometime soon. Good luck with that buck!
Say hi to Mother Mowery for me!
Brian
Now THAT'S a hookin'.Good luck guys..hope you can get on him.
Good luck fellas.
Good luck guys, big bucks are big because they are smart!!! ;)

I'll send ya a PM Kenny.....
Hey Ken, Looks like a nice Cat quiver you got there...must be you like it...lol!!!!!!
He has the look of someone who knows his business and business is good. :)
Nothing harder or more difficult in the hunting world as targeting one specific mature whitetail to set your sights on.
Good luck - I'll be watching this one!
Ken, hope you score a shot on this bruiser! Look forward to the continuing story. Stay safe out there and shoot straight! Shoot me a PM when you return.
I was at Crane mountain for a hike Sunday. The Dacks are beautiful. I didn't see a lot of deer sign but was a pleasure to be there. A few pockets had great color. It would be a thrill to kill a big buck up there. I see what you guys mean about getting thick. Would be impossible to stalk in some areas. All the more rewarding I guess.
Good luck.
Charlie
Hey Ken, sent you a PM
Good Luck tomorrow guys!!!!! Let us know how you make out.....
FINALLY the work week is over!!!!!! can't wait to hit the swamp with John tomorrow, going to put in a LONG sit and see if we can't get a glimps of Big Boy, maybe even slip in arra through him!!! i will be on the ground and can't wait.
Good luck Ken! The land I hunt is all timber and it looks like you have the same scenario.
I'm curious what you are piecing together by the rub line. Does John feel they will mostly follow a rub line from bedding to feeding? Or, are the rubs concentrated around his bedding area and he gets up throughout the day to check them out....
Dress warm Bro and go get ur done!
Good luck to you Ken. Thanks for the thread. Can't wait for an update!
Good luck Ken, I'll be watching this thread close as maybe I'll learn something! Jim
Good luck Ken.
Without a doubt, this will be in the back of my mind for a while!
the rub line is definitly his rubs and it is made between feeding ( fields at night) and bedding (thick swamp ) in the morning. he is hitting them hard and i truly believe it is just a matter of us putting time in (paying our dues!)untill we see him. hope John will chime in a bit as he REALLY knows this deer and its habits. now let me tell ya a little more about John. he knows how big this buck is (saw him twice last year) and knows where and why deer use the places they use in this swamp. i will take a lot of pic's tommorow.
 :coffee:
no luck today however Big boy is still hitting the rubs! will be after him in the morning. all my battaries were dead so no pic's, will take some tommorow. sat from 6:30 to 11:00 and plan on atleast the same tommorow if not more. still right on him!
:campfire: Warm the bones brother.
at it again, will be last day for a week, maybe the woods will offer him up today!
:campfire:
Tap.....tap.....tap.....tap..... ;)
no dice today! did have a doe very close with john watching over my shoulder, allmost! also had a group of 15 toms and jakes very close, allmost again! had an AWESOME day, did not make meat and feed my stomach but did indeed feed my soul!
Sounds like you had a great day Ken brother, sometimes the soul needs fed before our bellys. It's coming bro i feel it... :archer:
