Remember when I drug out my spring brown bear story for page after page after page? Well, I will make this one short and sweet....
My buddy Benny and my moose camp was over run by WOLVES! There was moose sign in the area but it was all really old.
We left camp on three occasions to specifically hunt wolves since they were howling nearby for days. I got to 14 paces on one while still hunting and here is the results!

Benny was within 25 yards on several occasions but too much intervening brush for a shot.
Now THAT is a trophy!! Outstanding!
wait wait...there is more to this story! moose pics moose pics...come on stevo! Benny's on his way home, well heck he should be there by now. He hasnt called saying he missed the standby this morning.
Ohhh my, thats an uncommon critter for a stickbow.Congradulations on an awesome animal. :notworthy:
WOW thats got to be a once in a lifetime trophy.
Look at the feet on that bugger! They're really impressive animals. What would a wolf like that weigh? Congrats on an awesome trophy.
Danny: Soooo much time to post many pictures when you have to go thru photobucket so the condensed story is it!
It is a small "b!tch" so probably only weighed 65-70 pounds or so????? A big wolf will weigh well over a hundred and a quarter pounds plus.
Dances with wolves. :biglaugh:
Congrats on a great trophy.
Awesome Steve!
Yeah, Steve! Well-done!
Wow that is outstanding!!
Attaboy! And to do it with a White Bison bow he made himself. Good mojo. Pretty heady stuff. Congrats!
Way to go Steve. Not many people have killed a wolf with a bow.
Jack
That is amazing.Congratulations.What an accomplishment.
Congrats!
Congrats!!! No moose story??????
Great Job! The local moose herd applauds you!
GLENN
Great job Steve!!
Awesome Steve.Blake
When you said some other interesting animal I had a feeling it might be a wolf. Congrats, a wolf is a fine trophy. :notworthy:
Olin
Congrats!!!
Way to go Steve. You don't see them down here in Missouri. Jim Pyles
Outstanding trophy! :thumbsup:Congrats! :clapper:With a Longbow too! :archer:
Wow...that is something, look at the feet on that thing. Really unique!!!!
You killed a wolf while still hunting?!!
:notworthy:
Dang, to say you're gonna go after a wolf, and then actually GET ONE is pretty special. Sucks for the moose, though, that they're so plentiful....
Sweet!
BEAUTIFUL!!!!! Are you going to be taking him to the taxidermist???
Now that's something you don't see very often. Congrats!
congrats steve, you da man!
Congrats. That is very cool.
Is this the first wolf harvest on here? I don't remember others.
Let:
I only ever remember hearing about four wolves killed with traditional bows. Bryce "Wary Buck" Lambley in Manitoba; Keith Dana (WY) in Alberta; a guy from MT killed one with a recurve in Alaska (story in TBM several-5 years or so ago); and mine.
Danny Simmons shot a wolf in Bosnia in the 90's but it ran into a mine field so was not recovered and for good reason!
Would be interested to hear if anybody was aware of others?
I know of a few with compounds but yours is the first with a stick that I've heard of around here.
talked to my big boss today, come to find out he was up there for the last two weeks also (caribou hunting)...he said in two weeks time he figured he seen 20 to 30 THOUSAND caribou....man alive!!!
WOW cool Beans!
to kill a top predator is a feat in itself- to kill one with a tomato stake--wel jist dont git no better
Steve you really are an old dog! Scent must've drawn her in!
Amazing all the same!
Congrats on a feat that will be tough to beat!
Good thing you got it now- I heard this week that wolves have been returned to the endangered species list, so no more hunting them until some semblance of sanity returns to wildlife management.
I agree that is a trophy of a life time. To stalk a top predator and close the deal is just awesome. :clapper:
Don: The ESA determination doesn't apply to Alaska.
I was hunting in that area and am worried that wolves got my German Shepard. Has anybody seen her? She's real friendly. She'd run right up to you if she saw you.
Good, Steve. That's a beautiful trophy!
Paul: Any chance that GS would lick your face while wagging its tail, lol?
Wow what as cool harvest, WOLF !! Congrads.
  :notworthy:
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Hoe!!! Thats is definitely over the top in bow trophys even beyond a Royal Slam of turkeys. :clapper:
thats a beauty Steve Congrats buddy!
Still hunted to within shooting range of a wolf????
Steve, you have my humble blessings! Congrats! :notworthy:
Steve your my Hero!
  :notworthy:
One of the most sought after North American game trophies... And With a stick and string! WOW!
You Da Man,
My Dad killed one in Canada A few years back and his guide said he had been guiding for twenty + years and only had five killed and that was with rifles.
Hats off to you!
We could have killed one from our cook tarp too. We had our bows leaning on brush and laying on the ground and one walked about 17 yards while we had our hands in our pockets. I had my 10mm strapped on and should have punched it with a 200 grain Buffalo Bore just to help the cause (moose)!
One day Benny was again at the cook tarp and a wild-eyed snowshoe hare came ripping thru and had a panic-striken look in his eyes. Benny nocked an arrow and a couple minutes later two wolves showed up looking for their meal. They were about 25 yards but there was too much interveneing brush to squeeze and arrow thru.
Dang!!!
Let's see now. A brown bear this spring, a wolf this fall, wasn't there something else? Muskox?
The way I see it, you've pretty much used up your bowhunting mojo for the next, say, three years?
Good time of year to skin that gal, too, I expect. Hide shouldn't be blue for this time of year that far north. Good Shot!
That's too cool Steve....congrats!
Wow! .......Now we know who the ultimate predator is ..... "Steve Hohensee"
That is a proud accomplishment sir!
NICE!!! that's too sweet. I know one old timer that said he shot two with his bow when he called in a pack. He shoots wheels though.
very nice you must have had your best stalking hat on that day to stalk in on an apex predator.
A full body mount would be awesome! Good theft deterrent too!LOL!
Wow! What an accomplishment.
Chris
I see you haven't changed. Congrats!
That would feel sooo-gooood!! Congrats on a great accomplishment.
Beautiful animal.
Awesome. Thanks for sharing the pic/story.
Have you done any wolverine hunting?
I've only ever see one wolverine while hunting, on a caribou hunt out of Dillingham in 2001. It was carrying a whole caribou spine, looping up the valley. I was exposed on the hillside and couldn't get down to try and cut him off.
Fantastic, congratulations on an awesome trophy!
Kev Bahr reminded me Rick Case of WI also arrowed a wolf in Alberta. Geez, I think you have to be a PBS member to arrow a wolf. I believe all of the above are members, better get some of you signing up!
Good job Steve. You can always shoot another moose. :)
Congratulations, Steve!
Wow, Steve... awesome. Haven't heard a peep from you in a while and I stumble on to this thread. Congrats!
Congrats Steve, that is incredible!
Gosh Chris, I had heard that you sold all your bows to buy a new bass guitar!
