I was drawn to hunt an Army installation this year. The state of Va conducts the hunts and requires all bowhunters to qualify by hitting a paper plate 2 out of 3 times at 30 yards, from an elevated stand.
I've been working hard to insure I don't make a fool of myself and represent the Trad community well. As far as I know there has never been another trad shooter qualify for this particular hunt.
Here is my last "qualifying" attempt for the day. Hope I can do this on Sat!

with that, you will represent "us" well......
(note: what is the elevation of the stand? you okay with angles?)
Looking good!
Do us proud. Obviously, you can pick the spot.
Gary
Go gettum Allen, Know you'll do an excellent job. For those who don't know- this fella shoots very well.
Best to you, Buddy.
Helluva group. Nice looking bow as well.
well done
Good looking bow, great shooting! Maybe you could represent us with a color other than pink?
Good shooting! That group is at 30 Yards? :wavey:
F-Manny
Nice shooting. My problem with those qualification things is shooting in front of other people. That's another reason I don't do 3-D. I can shoot fine when the pressure is on with a deer in range, but have problems with a bunch of folks standing around. I guess I need to go to a few trad shoots to get over that. Fortunately up here to hunt Fort Belvior with a recurve, you only have to qualify with 2 out of 3 inside a paper plate at 20 yards from the ground. I can do that one even with people.
Thanks guys!
BobW, the stand is 14' high for the qualifying.
Canoeman....pink is beautiful!!! OK it's the only color the local shop had in 5" feathers.
Stinger, that's the only thing that worries me is the fact that I have someone looking over my shoulder. I aksed my wife if she thought they would let me send them a video. :bigsmyl:
F-Manny....yes that group was from 30 yards. They aren't always that good though.
Stinger, I'm hunting at Radford Army Arsenal. They need to get with the Fort Belvoir guys and make the rules a little user friendly for us stick bow guys! I'll have a chat with the man in charge when I go on the hunt to see how he feels about it.
Sure Allen, the only color they had, huh. LOL!
Nice shooting!! Good luck this season!!
Good shooting!!! Have been going through the qual thing at Aberdeen PG for 10 yrs. Its closer to ft Belvoir standards and only gets easier every time you do it.
Good luck brother! Block everything and everyone out and get in the zone! Shoot straight brother!
Best of luck to ya!
Dear Lord, what do you got on that purty bow, Allen...a Whisker Biscuit? ;)
Jeff said you had that thing tuned up nice....I reckon so
If you can do that every time....you missed your calling. The IBO worlds were held last weekend!
You'd have won!
(Good luck)
Good luck. Some great shooting there.
Being able to see your arrow is more important than worrying about "manly" colors. ;)
I shoot in a city hunt that requires 3 out of 5 in a 9" target at 20 yards. Some days I can do it, some days I can't. Passed again this year and ready to do my civic duty.
Thanks again guys. It's funny how they all seem to go just right......sometimes!!
Doc....I found some attows that she likes REAL well. I think the pink feathers help a little also :bigsmyl:
So? Success?
Just saw this thread. I have no doubt that Allen put all 3 in the bull. He is a very good shooter and nice guy to boot. Don
Which bow is that Alan.
To be judged this way completely ignores the realities of hunting.
To agree with it is our death knell.
I watched a 'modern type bow' shooter practice with groups like that at 80 yards; and when he shot a deer at 60 yards he said: " I put the sight on him and squeezed the trigger - and BOOM! - I got him !".
I don't want that guy or his followers- to judge me and my bowhunting abilities; and as well goals and dreams: with ~their~ ideologies.
this is sad. if i was going to just walk up and stick arrows in the target and then take a picture and put it on tradgang i would have put the arrows a little closer together! :)
hehehehe, go get em neighbor! make sure you fix that weird clicking sound on your bow first though!
Good Luck...Stick 'em in there!!!
A.S. you are my hero fo sho. My brother plays golf and used to have some purple golf shoes. He would say "you gotta be good to wear those shoes".
Hope you bang them together today.
I agree Brian.
Thanks again guys. I agree about having to be judged on your hunting abilities with a silly test like this, but having the opportunity to hunt this property is WAY worth it for me.
I did, however, qualify with flying colors. I shot my first two arrows in the plate and was done.
JoeVan, I was shooting my Silvertip.
Green Arrow (Kyle....neighbor.....bud), I'm pretty sure that clicking noise will never go away. It seems to work for me!
:clapper:
good shootin' neighbor!

:clapper: :clapper: Good job Al I never had a doubt .... now we all wait for dead animal pics !! good luck
Ken, this hunt is on Oct 24. The way the rules go for this place is that you must get drawn and go on a doe hunt, then start applying again next time for a buck hunt.
This is my year for the doe hunt. But the beauty of it is all the big bucks that we have the potential of seeing.....The State DNR does a really good job of planting feed for these deer and only letting mature bucks be killed.
Hopefully I get drawn for the buck hunt again next year.
I didn't think traditional shooting was that accurate. I have seen people shoot recurves and long bows and have nice groups at 20 yards but nothing like your shooting. Good luck at your shoot... RAY
A.S. congratulations. I admire you for putting your proficiency to the test and making it.
I don't have a problem with proficiency test to be able to hunt. I have an idea it would increase the traditional recovery rate.
rusty
I'm OK with doe pictures ... have a safe hunt.
Well done!
Congradulations. Hap
No question on the qualifying, Allen. Good luck on the 24th.
Awesome!!! Good luck on your hunt and take lots of pics...we like pics...
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Congrats on qualifying and good luck on your hunt.
How come the bow I bought off you won't shoot arrows in that tight of a group :)
Good luck , my In laws live real close to the arsenal.
Jack
Jack, send that bow back to me. I'll see what I can do for it!! LOL
Allen send me pictures of your hunt when you go, I muskie fish the river down along the arsenal.
You can't have the bow back , it has some whitetails to give a zwickey hicky :)
Good luck and keep us posted .
Jack
Sounds good Jack. You need to invite me on one of those musky trips!
I hope to have a pic or two to show off.
You are welcome to go anytime I'm down there .I will let you know next time , I go in the New.
Anyhow good luck on the arsenal :archer:
