Gaff, I like you was sharpening challenged. Call Ron at KME, he will get you razor sharp. He's is definitely an edgeologist. The cool thing about Ron is he sells sharpening tools but would be very happy to help you sharpen your edge with whatever tactics you use. Although his KME tools I think are the best hands down and even make me look like a edgeologist.

A file sharpened burr edge will absolutely kill any game you hit fairly with it.

From what I read years ago Fred Bear preffered a filed burr edge. I know I have cut myself good on edges like that. I do think If you strop them they will improve.

Your heads should shave even if you use a file. You may be applying too much pressure. After you file on one side it is going to raise a burr on the other. Lightly file alternating sides until you are using almost no pressure and the burr is gone. It should shave.

If you can't get there with a file buy a Simmons wheelie sharpener and it will get you shaving for around $7.

Do the rubber band test. If your burr cuts the rubber band with no pressure (just the wieght of the head)you are ready. I'm more concerned about cutting veins and arteries than I am shaving hair.

Howard Hill preferred a slight burr on his heads, and I believe John Schulz also followed that.  A slight burr edge will kill as quick as anything.  I just strop the edge with my belt to remove most of the burr and can get a shaving edge that way.

Hey man, let me know if you need a strip of leather for a strop...

I think you may be using too much pressure like stated above....as you sharpen, lessen the pressure with each stage....
