I think I remember reading about some home made scent killer spray with water a nd baking soda at some point.
Anybody have any recipes they care to share before i go and experiment?
16 oz 3% hydrogen peroxide
16 oz distilled water
1/4 cup baking soda
1 oz unscented liquid soap
Mix all but soap in 1 gal plastic jug, shake well.
Let settle a few min,add soap,mix gently....
Kenny, is that formula for washing with or spraying on clothes/gear?
the formula is for spraying, for washing I just use baking soda straight up and then air dry outside
Here's mine, looks the same as Kenny's but I've added the process I use also. I spray everything I take out with it. Good luck.
Ingredients:
16 oz. (2 cups) hydrogen peroxide, 3% solution (normal type found in drug stores)
16 oz. (2 cups) distilled water
1/4 cup baking soda
1 oz. unscented shampoo
Note: remember 32 oz. = 1 quart; expand ingredient amounts proportionately for larger amount of end product.
Directions:
(1) Mix ingredients in large bowl so baking soda dissolves (water, then peroxide, then baking soda, then soap).
(2) Pour into clean 1 gal. plastic milk jug (easily found in most homes). Note: do not shake!
(3) Let sit at moderate temperature for several days until chemical reaction settles down. Note: do not leave in tightly sealed container (use milk jug with snap-on cap)!
(4) Pour prepared mixture into spray bottle(s) of your choosing.
A few things to ponder on this stuff.
Make sure spray bottles are not clear or keep them out of sunlight.
Sunlight will break down the peroxide into water. The peroxide is in this solution to kill and prevent bacteria that creates odor.
The baking soda traps and absorbs odor molecules.
The unscented soap is a binding agent that makes the solution stick to what you spray in on.
Also if you spray on your bow it will leave white residue, but it came off mine with no probs!
***hydrogen peroxide, 3% solution (normal type found in drug stores)***
That stuff will burn off your skin in higher percentages. :scared:
Its cheap; and you can use it pure to spray on blood trails; it bubbles when it hits blood.
ive seen almost the same recipe for taking skunk smell off of the dog. Works well.
What type of non scented soap? Where do you fine it?
Thanks for your help,
Steve
ssoden,
I am using my Hunter's Specialties green liquid body wash soap.....
nocams :coffee:
Thanks for the post, this will save me a bunch of $$$$$.

I make mine in gal sized batchess using distilled water at the beginning of the season... However, I adjust up everything but the soap... the soap just helps as a binder to keep it all together in suspension so to speak... When I used more soap, I lost a lot more from sudsing.... However, Don't leave in the sun or a warm vehicle.... It will leak...
Cool thanks guys. I love being able to use household items to make things that other guys spend good money on.
A friend of mine who has consistently bags a couple deer each year in archery season uses something that could probably be considered more of a cover sent than "sent killer", but he swears by it.....
70% isopropal alcohol and 30% vanilla extract. Mix it up in a spray bottle and use it like any of the factory products.
I tried it last year and can't say that it was any less effective than the store bought "Sent Killer". The amazing thing is that you would think the vanilla extract would put dark stains on your clothing, but it doesn't. Pretty cheap and I'll try it again this year.
Great info - I suppose you could use it to spraay down a pop up blind too.
I like Mentos peppermint gum. Tastes good, is very aromatic, and does not stick to your dentures. Nothing worse than trying to get gum residue off your store-boughts when a buck walks by.
George, do they sell it in a camouflaged pack?
Okay guys and Killy..... time to start preparing for the 2010-2011 season. Thought I would bring this one back to the top.
Store bought "scent killer" went down in flames when challenged in court. Save your money and use the wind.
In my opinion, nothing beats a clean lifestyle. Don't eat junk food, buy hygiene products without "fragrance" and go with a natural soap like Dr. Bronners hemp soap. GOOD STUFF maynard!
I made home-made scent killer, as described, in the past and just ended up with soap residue on my clothes and equipment. I can't say it made any difference except giving me confidence. The more I research the subject the more I stick with my first statement.
GOOD LUCK!
never bought into the Scent Lok and other brands of clothes. I do think the scent killer helps to knock down the amount of your scent and is part of staying as clean as possible. Still get busted now and then but nothing like years past.
same for rubber boots... they cannot completely keep you scent free but knock down the amount of scent left on the ground big time. I know this is true when our chocolate lab, " Fudgy ", took three trips thru the area before finally tracking us to our tree. It was fun watching her figure things out after about 30 minutes of getting it wrong 2 times, then third time was the charm. She still could not figure out where we were till we got to laughing and she looked up at us ! JMHO
I put cotton balls in a vanilla and let it soke in.Then before season put them on trees around my stands to let the deer get used to it. Then spray myself before i go to the stand. But i still try to come in from the backside of the stand and keep the wind in my favor.
I appreciate all the useful information I'm getting here.
Thank you!
God bless,Mudd
Just made up a fresh gallon for the year for about $3.00 total. Cost you 5 times that in the store fellers !
I mixed up a batch last year.
I think it works as well as the store bought stuff....but....I won't use it again.
I hunted in a slow drizzle, had the scent killer on my hands. My bow was too slick to even think about making a shot. I'm thinking it was the soap. I stay as clean as possible and hunt the wind.
I just read about using vanilla extract cut withwater...im going to try it net time out...
It may be a rumor but I heard if you smear honey around your neck it will over power your breath and they wont smell you.It only works in the early season. :goldtooth:
I brush my teeth and gargle with peroxide and use pine bows and the juice from boiled down pine needle to cover up my scent.
