Title: No more scentlok, sprays, charcoal suits and the like
Post by: Legolas on September 16, 2009, 06:25:00 PM
This works! Read about it. ALL THE HUNTERS WHO USE THIS SAY IT WORKS AND THEY WON'T GO BACK.
And I am one of them...

Hey why not? Im sure it has pros and cons just like other scent control ideas.
Thinking about it, I can remember seeing deer after I smelled smoke....when my neighbors lit the burn barrel, it signaled to me that it was almost "deer time". I could certainly smell the burn barrel, so I know the deer could...

How'd the fire start? And why do you have that bee hive smoker?   :knothead:

Me and my dad have always used smoke as a cover scent.. We will burn a little pile of pine straw and get all in the smoke before we hunt and it works quite effectively... of course they're always doing controlled burns down here in south mississippi so that could be part of the reason

I believe it may work.  My personal bowyer, Denton Forehead, once shot a very nice buck right after he caught his pant leg on fire while trying to heat his Spam sandwich.  Of course, it could have been the Spam.....maybe.

I am also guessing that smoker sales are in the tank right now, so they maybe looking for a new wrinkle.  I wonder if they give you any mirrors with that thing?

My neighbor seems to do okay by keeping his hunting overalls in the dairy barn.  UMMMMM good old rural Pa. perfume.

I would run right out and get one of those if I had some bee hives.

I always hang out around my smoker after shooting a deer.     :knothead:   Looks like I have things all backwards.

I will have to start hanging out in the shed with the smoker before I go hunting now.  What do you think would work better hickory, apple, mesquite, or alder?  I am thinking apple.
 ;)

Hey what would happen if I burned some sage and let the smoke get on my hunting clothes? Would that be a good cover sent , I have lots of sage for spiritual reasons and often thought it would work for a cover sent, let me know what ya think??

I can barely remember some parties in the 60's where there was a lot of cover scent around.   :biglaugh:

Hmmmm interesting...is there any thought that deer, or any wild animals for that matter, associate the smell of fire with danger?

Do they have any of those wood chips that smell like beer brats cooking on a grill? I hunt a lot in Wisconsin and it's a real pain dragging a Weber out to my stand every morning.   :D

I think we have all gotten smoked out by a fire in camp and gotten close to animals the next day.  Y aknow how?  By hunting into the wind!  I think that smoke will work once or twice until the animals learn to associate the smell with danger and then it won't work so well anymore.  Skunk used to be a hot cover scent, but quickly became useless due to bad hunters.

Hey it works for pigs too.  Every time I smell smoke it is from my back yard smoker.  there is a pig in there everytime  :)

I think smoke works as well as any other cover scent...maybe a little.

The wind is everything, and we all know that deer can pick apart the wind and ID all of the scents within it. So a heavy smoke cover may give you a few more seconds to draw your bow....but it sure as heck won't make you invisible.

What I find HILARIOUS is that folks think they need to BUY something to create smoke.....

I wasn't aware that coffee could come out of my nose at the rate it just did. Thanks George.

You nailed it! I thought about this idea a long time ago. Ever wake up the next day after being around a campfire, you smell like smoke. Assuming dogs and deer have similar capabilitys, I contacted a search and rescue organization. The guy was very friendly and told me lots of neat stuff. He said there are houses/buildings that the smoke smell will burn your eyes, yet the dogs walk right in and can tell you EXACTLY where the fire started, assuming it was started with an excellerant. He said if deer are like dogs, then they can pick apart the air and tell you exactly whats in it. We walk into a house and all we smell is the apple pie being cooked. A dog can smell everything that is being cooked. I also spoke with a dog trainer for the police department. He said they could leave a trail thru a field, dog could follow it. They burnt the field, dog still could follow it. They plowed the field, dog could still follow it. Scent is EVERYWHERE and you cant hide or mask it. He said they would wear rubber gloves and wrap drugs in various materials and place it in a glass jar with a lid. The dog could find it every time. They figured the scent got on the outside of the jar, simply from transfering the drugs to it. As for scent lok type clothing, it gets even better. They made a fully zippable sleeping bag out of the material and put a guy in it. The dog found him easily. They made two of them one inside the other and put a guy in it, dog found it again. This all assumes a dog and deer can smell the same. Charles Alsheimer said he had bucks in his pen hanging out on the one side of the fence during the rut. He said he believes they could smell a hot doe(s) on the ridge upwind of that enclosure. The nearest cover on that ridge was 300yds away.

seriously, just tie a small  bit of dental floss to the top part of your bow string and then hunt accordingly.

I have hung my clothes in the barn for ages and also am a fan of rain washing on the clothes line for all my gear.  Ive stored them in unscented contractor garbage bags with natural leaf litter and branches from around my stands to add scent.  I commonly use a cheap bottled scent killer and cover scent combined before each hunt as well.

That being said I have seen friends and relatives pull out a pair of camo (if you could really still call it that it was so faded) coveralls from behind the truck seat (covered up by soda cans and McDonalds wrappers) right where they left them at the end of last season and go kill deer with a bow.

Fact is no matter how scent free you think you are you are actually exhaling so many cubic feet of stench that its absurd to think you can become invisible to a deers nose unless you are willing to quit breathing.  I dont recommend that btw.  Obviously I try to stay as scent free as possible and use cover scents to cover any unusual odors I might drag along but I would never hunt with out the wind in my favor... period.

Regretably there are so many gadgets on the market that claim such unbelievable feats as making you invisible to deer both in scent and sight that its all too tempting to believe at least one of them.  Bottom line is that many of the short cuts that claim to save you time and let you get sloppy are simply a fairy tale to get you to part with your hard earned cash.

Just my two cents.

Either the wind is right for your stand or it isn't...  I set stands/ground blinds using a compass to make sure I place them correctly for the prevailing winds.  I will not hunt a stand on an "iffy" wind.
