With all the talk about single bevels and new broadheads coming out i suspect a lot of people have changed heads. My question is do you'll have a go to broadhead or do you change around depending on your mood.
I shoot zepher sasquatch's for turkey
grizzly 190's swapping to abowyer for everything else.
I have a lot of go to things: I have a go to truck; a go to set of boots; a go to set of arrows, and yes...a go to broadhead. Single bevels have not excited my inner soul so I'm shooting Bear Razorheads. I have an uncle who has a go to bar. Well, at least on Friday nights.
Good luck this season my friend. It's 11:25PM and I need to "go to" bed.
I think George said no...or at least that he's not ready to jump on any bandwagon but that Bear Razorheads have killed deer for him for years so he's not about to "go to" anything else anytime soon.
I've tried Snuffers and Woodsmen. Both worked, but this year I'm going to "go to" Zwickey Deltas. Yup, old school, double-bevel, wide, two blade broadheads that penetrate great and leave a big old gash. Also they are inexpensive and have killed every critter on the planet. I guess you could say they are proven.
I'll bite.
The old-style Muzzy 3-blades. Like 30coupe, they're double-bevel, 3 blade, and you have to slickin' them up out of the package...not much to get the fuzzys about...but of the whopping 3 different heads I've tried I go back to them.
I like a little more weight up front than the Delta provides, so my "go to" head for the past several years has been the Ace Express 165. I'm playing around with some other weighting options, so will be trying some other heads, incl the Delta, but I will keep some of my proven arrows with the Ace on them just in case.
I like regressing the older I get. This year my arrows will be tipped with Pearson Deadheads, Shulz Hunter heads from "days gone by" but I also will use 160 gr Snuffers. However, my go to head will always be the 125 gr Zwickey Eskimo. I'm never without these in my quiver. Been shooting them since 1978 with great results.
I'll stick with my Ribteks., but they are getting harder to find than parts for my Winchester Model 94.
i changed from a woodsman to a 125 eskimo, every year theres gonna be the newest thing out. but in my opinion you can go wrong with the ones that have stood the test of time. But there all gonna work if you get em sharp and put em were it counts
STOS.
My "goto" head is sharp, period...
I use a lot of different heads and depending on what I'm after and I guess my mood is what ends up on the end of my arrow.
- Heads I'm using now...
Silver Flame DS and XL (185 and 180)
Snuffer 160, 125 (weighted to 200), 100, and SS (weighted at 125)
Magnus 1, 135 and 160 (weighted to 260, and I've got a dozen or so of the 135 weighted at 175)
Woodsman original 125 (weighted to 200)
Pearson Deadhead 'Wide' (weighted to 260)
Razorcap (at 125 and 200)
Hi Precision 3-blade, 1957 vintage (weighted to 200)
Snuffers 160's
And Woodsman,or the new VPA Terminators for hogs....
Simmons and woodsmans have always been great for me.This year I am shooting the VAP Terminators and Magnus buzzcuts.
I switched to Ace Standards in 2004 and see no need to change again. If it's not broken...
Ace Standards for me as well
Woodsman, Magnus I four blade or Zwickey Delta (2 or 4)
I have many other heads, but these will always be in my quiver
Most broadheads are good if sharp. I've used most of the old standbys and they have all worked very well..
However, this year and probably for a long time, the Abowyers heads are my "go to" favorites. The steel and temper in them is just fantastic. They sharpen to a razor edge and hold that edge. Very well made plus have a machined ferrel.. Just a really premium head for a reasonable price. I've managed to kill a few pigs with these heads and the results have been great..
STOS 160s, Zwickey 4-blade deltas, Abowyer single bevel Wapitis. Usually have two of the three in my bow quiver at any one time.
Zwickey Delta 2bl for me. Been using that head for over 30yrs. Tough, accurate and easy to sharpen, with good penetration. No need to change.
160 Snuffers. If I want lighter, I use 125 Snuffers or Zwickeys. For heavier, 190 Ribteks or Grizzlys. I'll be getting some of the 160 and 190 VPA's at some point, after the dust settles. Hoping for the 1 1/4 width that might be coming.
211gr Boneheads 75gr adapters on a 340 Axis, face shaving sharp. Can`t wait to put one in Elk next week with a little luck
I want to go to a singel bevel but will likely shoot 160 Thunderhead 3 blades (old style)
The old green Bear Razorheads serve me well. I have several dozen stashed. Last season took a nice Oklahoma whitetail and boar hog with the same head. Plan on hunting with that head again this season. I'm betting she has enough mojo left for this old bowhunter.
300 Xtremes and the big wide German Kenitics. Also got some of the new Wensel Woodsmans and some Razorcaps.
Danny
Simmons Interceptors
I'm with joe skipp have 2dz deadheads that are very sharp. Ready to go just need season to open
stingers 125- the old green bear razorheads- stos- magnus125 and some howard hill heads- and some knapped heads that i will be bringing with me this year.
125 Snuffers or 125 Woodsmans (originals) with 75 grain broadhead adapters to make a 200 grain head. Mike
grizzly and abowyer- just work really well and fly great-
160 snuffers for a 3 blade and Grizzley 190's for my two blade heads. I have a three pack of those VPA heads on order. Gonna try them out soon.
I normally shoot 160gr STOS but this year I'm going with the 160gr VPA Terminators. I recently bought some VPA's from Bob Morrison and was very impressed with them.
I have a feeling that my Stinger 4-blades are gonna be in my quiver for quite a while.
Wensel Woodsman with an adapter that gets the head to 225 grains with another 100 grains in the arrow insert.
STOS 145 grain.
If I were trapped in a world with only one broadhead choice (what a horrible place...), I would shoot Zwickey 2 blade deltas forever.
I did calculations, and my blood trails got a lot shorter when I started shooting the deltas.
Brett
Bear Razorheads, with inserts 145 gr. for deer and big game. Snuffer 3 blade 145 or 160 gr. for turkey with recurve or longbow and a bow quiver. Use Grizzly 160 gr. Hill 160 gr. and Schulz with longbow & backquiver.
160 snuffers...out of everything......for everything.......
Trying out Abowyer Whitetails this fall.
Magnus 160 two blade, Snuffer 160 three blade.
Turkeys-160 snuffer
Deer and hogs-Abowyer brown bear, no mercy single bevel, will be trying the VPA terminator and abowyer bonehead on hogs.
Magnus I heads are always my go to heads from light poundage bows. When I`m shooting a little heavier bow I shoot Snuffers.I also like the big Simmons heads.RC
Magnus I
Bear Razorheads.
Can you say "SNUFFER"!!!
Simmons 190 Interceptors
Zwickey, 4 blade delta's with 100 grn brass inserts.
Any wide two edge, like a big Magnus, or a Delta.
I was really impressed with the Abowyers, but I have a box full of good two edge heads, and didn`t ever seem to NEED to spend any money on new broadheads.
If I could get a big Snuffer as sharp as I can a two edge, I might try them for hunting. But as of yet, "I just can`t do it captain".
Snuffer 160
Tusker "Concorde" 190s...PR
SNUFFERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ii used a 2 blade Stinger with the bleeders on a Doe last night, it did the job! I also carry WW and Snuffers in my quiver! They all work well if I do my part!
