Went over to eastern KY Friday and Saturday, elk scouting for the upcoming season n 3 weeks, my wife drew a bull tag. Saw one big 6x6 at 75 yards and a cow at 10yds while sitting in the truck waitng for fog to lift. Stayed on till 10am. Went up on a reclaimed strip flat, about40 acres, found a 4x5 bedded down about 200yds away on a step. Herd a couple of bugles, no more elk. After about45 minutes of watching him, I decided to stalk the bull, go behind and above him and crept with in 30 yards, when I knocked a rock loose and he stood up. I got some good pics. No more elk, so at noon we went to an Elk Expo at the Knott County Sportsplex, kinda small, but good info. The nephew of a buddy of mine was showing us around, so we went back to the same meadow joining the wood line at 5pm. Started hearin bugles in 10 minutes, continued here and there until 7:55, elk started coming out. We just sat facint them in camo with our spotting scope and binos, it was fantastic! Nice cool breeze all afternoon, saw nearly 20 cows, and 9 Bulls! Two younger bulls were sparing, 2 biggest bulls bugling constantly, had elk bed down in front of me at 75yds. Saw 5 great shooters, 2 monsters. The biggest one was a 6x5, high and wide, good royals, he got within 100yds, bugled all evening. 2 more bulls had good mass, dark brown horns, but not nearly as big as the herd bull. To be able to see, here and actually hunt and interact with these great animals here in our home state is awesome. We left them bedded down or grazing at dark, one of the truly best evenings of my life, now I now know why people are so addicted to elk hunting. We will be back in 3 weeks for the season opener, my wife is fired up, she has always been crazy about elk, and to draw a tag is a once in a lifetime thing here in KY. The guy showing us around had picked up and mesured several sheds, we figured the biggest bull woud go about375, the other 2 biggest ones about 340-350 inches. This is gonna be awesome, even if I am not the one with the tag, just tagging along is super. Just thought I would share with you guys.
Sound awesome good luck to your wife.
Thanks, Ben, you gotta see how well these elk are doing to believe it.
Good luck Sam. Hap
Congrats to your wife on the draw. I'm jealous. I've been in the draw from the beginning with no luck.
Sounds like you found some good bulls. Good luck with the hunt.
Marvin
Hey Marvin. Yeah I have put in every year too, but no luck. Well at least I get to go with her, take hero pics, quarter and pack out, hooray!
Geez someday maybe. Enter every year and when I check to see if I drew the site comes up with "Dear loser...
I am going to martin county this weekend my wifes parents live there. they say that they hear and see elk all the time around the federal prison and the airport think I may run up there and see if I can see one of them. I didnt draw a tag but would love to just hearor see one. Sounds like you had a blast
I saw that area on Elk Chronicles awhile back.
