Title: Cold weather facemasks
Post by: Squirrelbane on September 09, 2009, 08:50:00 PM
I was just wondering what you guys like to wear on your face for cold weather hunting. From what I've seen, there doesn't seem to be very many decent, mostly wool, warm facemasks out there.

pictures or links appreciated.  :D

Avery Products Turtlehead. No it is not wool, wished it was. However, it is good thick fleece with a great windliner. You can weJMHOar it several different ways too. If it is bone cold, less than 10 degrees and a cloudy windy day I also wear a thin Army surplus polypro balclava, did I spell that right, underneath the Turtlehead. Warm as toast but drives me crazy cause I cannot hear with all that stuff over my ears. A trade off I guess on a bone cold day, just have to swivel that head more and look instead of relying on ears. JMHO

Look in the mountaineering, ski, and snomobile shops and magazines for lots of them.

When it's really, really cold I like to use the living room window to cover my face but if my arm gets twisted and I have to go out in the cold, in gale force winds, I tend to dress like this.

I have a few things to keep my neck warm and a good wool cap to help hold the heat.  I have tried a few things over the face, but I used a under armor camo face mask last year in warm and cold weather.  I was surprised how well it work for both.  In warm weather is wicked the sweat off and the antimicrobial lining I think cut down on my scent.  I felt cooler with it on in warm weather and no sweat in the eyes in hot early season hunting after hiking in with gear and climbing trees.  In the cold weather I was surprised how much warmer I was with it on, and I was able to shoot with it on because it fits so close.   I have now used it to hunt waterfowl, deer, and turkey in all weather.

Silk balaclava from Wintersilks is where I start.  Fleece balaclava over that.

just becareful covering your face in the extreme cold....

Dont uncover it once you warm up.  Condensation on your mask and face will freeze...making frostbite almost inevitable!

Look up Cabelas Ryno skin. Good stuff doesn't seem like much and you can shoot with it but it's really warm.
