How many older traditional shooters here
I'm curious how many traditional shooters are here that are a half century old or older? I'll be 59 the 14th of this month.
Things have sure changed in the last 45 – 50 years I've been shooting bows. I'm also curious what all you other old goobers are shooting? Recurve, longbow and weight at your draw length?
54 and 61 lb black widow takedown recurve bows here. I should have a new 50 lb Howard Hill Wesley Special delivered by Friday this week.
Let's hear from all you other old shooters.
Ken
What's with this "old" 2$1!?
Killdeer :wavey:
Ken
I don't think of myself old at 62 :saywhat: But I shoot a 64" 54# long bow. Been shooting bows for 30 years trad. and compounds, last 15 years long bows, recruves.

Larry, awesome! archery has sure changed over the years hasn't it. I can remember, as you can when there was no compound bows. So many great bowyers from 30 years ago are no longer in business or alive.
What kind of longbow are you shooting?

I want some of your water. Your a very young lookin 53 Sis. Love the pic at your profile too.
What kind bow are you shooting?
I will be 63 in a couple of months. I don't feel old and I hope I don't act old.
I have always shot traditional except for a one or two season sidestep in the early 1970's.
Things have sure changed. I remember when you could not find a leather back quiver or arm guard. Very few places to build you a bow compared to what there is now.
I am thrilled to see so many new shooters, young and old, embrace traditional.
According to Bentpole and Team Pink...I'm 57 going on 25....
62 here . I got my first trad bow at age 5.It was a hickory stick with a red and white string. Never did get a jackrabbit with that bow but it wasn't from lack of trying. :bigsmyl: Bob
I'm 54 and currently shoot a variety of recurves and longbows in the 60-65 pound range, Morrisons, Acadian Woods, plus an old 55 Bear Kodiak Special I'm fond of that was made the year I was born.

SO what are ya shooting young fellah???
i'm 59 also,been doing it off and on,50 or 51 years,never shot a compound,hope to someday.shot a hickory selfbow in my youth with stone heads,dfifting back thay way again.they say,what go's around,come's around. :campfire: :archer: :coffee:
I turned 67 last June. Have always shot traditional bows since getting into archery in 1970. I started with recurves and still shoot them but my favorite bows are my longbows. I have dropped down in weight now and shoot 59 Lbs @28" draw. Although that is my hunting bow. Most of the time the bows are 54Lbs @28"draw.
I'll turn 60 November. Shot traditional in grade school until my early 20's and drifted away. Started shooting again in my 40's and went to compounds for a couple of years. Back to trad only the past 12 yrs.
But I didn't know what trad was really all about until I stumbled onto this sight about 3 yrs ago.
I would have to say that it not only changed my attitude, but my way of life.
Softened my heart a bit, and strengthened my mind.
58 last March. Hunt Hills exclusively both my 82# & 71#. The 71# is 2" longer at 70" & smoother. Old guys (d)rool!
56 at the end of this month. Been shooting a bow since I was 8. Legally hunting since I was 12. This year shooting Jim Jones' Firefly TD longbow, 58# @ 29". Hopefully break it in tomorrow, (opening day). Brain tells me I'm 17, body says otherwise. Hope I have another 20 left.
Good Luck to all you "old timers"!
I'll turn 57 as this bowseason ends in January. Been shooting a bow for 39yrs this year, all traditional 'cept for a couple years back in the mid '70s,(there is a story there). I shoot a longbow of my own manufacture 64#@27" most of the time, as I have for the last 16yrs. Also a older Bighorn recurve 60@27 and a couple of Bear takedowns in the 50-60# range.
I recently had my 61st birthday....still have the 15# Pearson Power Jet I got when I was 8.
I shoot mostly recurves, but do have several longbows.
Most of my bows are around 55#s, but I still have the first TD bow I ever bought....65# TD Redwing Hunter.
Being old is a state of mind, and you're only as old as you let yourself think you are.
I still hunt from loc-on type stands 16-18' high.
My hunting podna is 74 years young and climbs a tree like a cat squirrel.
I break, start, train, and sell 3 or 4 colts every year....sit around on your butt all the time and you will get OLD in a hurry.
Man, I'm glad There seems to be a bunch of people here that's been shooting traditional a while.
Did any of you get caught up in the heavy bow thing in 70s and 80s? I did. I hunted several years with a 100 lb big five longbow and used to shoot a 110 lb big five to stay in shape.
I have some problems with my left elbo that I believe is directly connected to my ignorant heavy bow days. I did have fun though and managed to kill a P & Y buck with the 100 lb bow that the Howard Hill company used a pic of in the 80s for advertisement.
I turned 59 this past July. Don't feel it mentally but sometimes I do physically. I shoot mostly self made selfbows in the 55#@26" range although a friend gave me a 50#@26" boo back/belly R/D this spring that I love to shoot.
I've been shooting trad for 25 years.

Billy, neat! Wish I still had my first bow. But I believe it was a tree limb with bailing twine for s string. I couldn't make my arrows and used to buy them for 25 cents a piece at a local hardware store. My first manufactured bow was a 35 Lb fiberglass bow.

Wow, I envy you. I can't shoot bows that heavy any more baecuse of elbow problems. I used to love shooting heavy bows though
71 and counting. Active but with strength problems. I shoot true traditional longbows and flatbows (straight limbs... no curve, no R/D) that I make. I try to promote the use of bows in light weights for bunged up folks with bad shoulders and other problems. Getting old, or getting hurt, doesn't mean you have to stop shooting. Currently I'm shooting 25 to 32 pounds, mostly 27. Good days I can draw more, but not for too many shoots. Bow I took off the form today is looking like it'll be maybe 35#.
I will be 58 in April. The first time I ever shot a traditional bow, or any bow, was about 5 years ago. I have learned alot and come along ways in this 5 year addiction. Alot of that credit would go to Tradgang and the great people and friends I have met here. I beleive I am addicted to Tradgang as much as i am addicted to my bows. I shoot around 50# at 28" with a 26" draw. For longbows I shoot a Dwyer Dauntless, Roy Hall Cherokee, Treadway Black Forest, Chekmate Crusader, Steve Welte Deathwish and a Mosshorn. For recurves I shoot a SR Swift, Predator Super Classic, Palmer Classic, Jim Brackenbury "The Drifter", 3 60's Kokiaks and a Dale Dye Trails End I just picked up. I prefer how a longbow shoots and feels but I will grab anyone of the above bows on any given nite.
Will be 59 in a couple of weeks. Still shoot longbows and recurves in the high fifties, low sixties. But I don't push it. Neighbor made my first bow for me at the age of seven. Been shooting every since. I have a small collection of recurves and longbows that keep me in shape for the hunt. :archer:
At 65 I think I'm third in line ...so far. Pronghorn 52# @28" and Pronghorn 59#@ 27". Probably need to drop down some. Shot as a boy through college then quit until three years ago. Went back to my true love...trad archery made hunting fun again!
I'll turn 61 at the peak of the whitetail rut this year, and I'll be hunting them on my birthday in Missouri. This will be my 47th consecutive bowhunting season, well as I can remember. :)
My first bow that wasn't home-made came with arrows with rubber suction cups on the end. Started bowhunting for deer in the '60's with a 40# solid fiberglass Bear longbow when seeing a track was a thrill, and actually seeing a deer made the season a success. Killed my first deer, a spike, with a Ben Pearson recurve in the '70's.
Currently shooting both recurves and longbows. This year I'll carry a 50# Super Kodiak, or a 40# Quillian Patriot TD recurve, a 60# Dean Torges Osage backed with hickory (Miss Easy- killed a doe with her last year), or a 50# Quillian longbow. Did most of my hunting over the last couple of decades with a 67# Bamboo Longhunter by Quillian, but had to back off due to shoulder problems. Took a bull elk and a number of deer with it. Used a compound for a few years, but never really liked it.
Looking forward to a good season this year, starting with a mule deer and whitetail hunt in North Dakota with old friends. Three more weeks! I'm as excited this year about hunting as I've ever been. In past years I've hunted in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi (home), Arkansas, Missouri, South Dakota, and Colorado. Oh yeah, and Iowa too.
I'm 67 going on 18 shooting Martin Jaguar 60" 50#@29, Bear 62" 53# @29, Stewart 66" 65@29". Started with PSE compounds about 250 years ago, switch to trad recurves about 10 years ago..never looked back
Well, I'm 59 and proud of it. Have shot recurves
all my life, and my favorite for the last 12 years is a Bob Lee signature, 62inches, 66 pounds, with wood arrows.
My Wife favors a 60in, 46 pound Bob Lee, and usually outshoots me.
We recently moved a bed to create a nursery for
our new granddaughter, and found 12 bows we had all but forgotten.
Murray
Also a "peak of the rut" (in Indiana) birthday boy.
November 13 (last day of early archery and day before firearms) gives me 57 of em. That will be "Friday the 13th" ,unlucky for some whitetail out there. ;)
Up to about 50 shots the 55lb Super K weight isnt a problem but left elbow will let me know the next day. :knothead:
Right arm can still handle 80, not the left.
Might add that through the years I finally "figgered out" that dead is dead and my 43lb is a tack driver out to 30 yards. After 60 plus whitetail, that is way past my average whitetail shot plus I can shoot it for hours out in the yard.
Most you "younguns" may think that's pushing it BUT....take a look at the average weight of Grayling Bear bows. Animals didn't get any harder to kill over the years.
45lbs at my draw it feels like a target bow and arrow flight is just flat perfect.
With the superb heads we have to choose from from the past and present honed to razor sharpness on higher arrow weights, I'd tackle about ANY four legged critter in the US to 20-25 yards with it if I had no other bow.
Whitetail isn't a problem at all.
The 55lb is an emergency back up in case I win a free elk or moose hunt :bigsmyl:
62 come December. Bought Bear Panda in 1958, then a navy career limited my hunting, but I've been making up for it since I retired. So far this year 8 days solo for Dall and just finished 9 days for bou. Head for MT on Friday for deer, elk and antelope. Shoot mostly Harrison longbows now.
I will be 63 in 3 months been shooting since I was 7 this will be my 52nd bow season.
I'm 68 been shooting bows since I was 8 been hunting for 56 years .Currently shooting a Stahl takedown two sets of limbs 57# and recently reduced set 45# also shoot an original Treadway set at 46#. Will hunt a total of one day early season back surgery on Oct 5th ruptured disc hope to get out in late season.
At 68 years young and still shooting...3 days or more a week on a 32 target 3D course and hount every day we have a season open for deer except Sunday, I keep as a family days since now retired...Checkmate firebird 50 at 28 inc and I draw 28 1/2 inch.
58 here and shooting since 8, with a side trip of 8 years with a crutch. Shoot mid fifties as that is all a whitetail around here needs.Shot a 64# widow for awhile but a pass thru can still be accomplished without that much #'s.
I'm 65 as of june of 09. Still shooting 50+# almost every day. Trad Archery is one of my many great passions in life. It is very good to get out and clear the mind and become the arrow. Archery as helped me through some hard times in all these years. MIKE
72 this December, have always shot recurves and longbows. Mostly longbows now in the low #50's. Started at Camp Lejeune,NC in the early sixties.
Might as well join the parade. 62 years old. Uncle gave me my first bow at age 7, Lemonwood long bow can't remember the draw weight but I do remember the afternoon it blewup. Hunted with a compound bow exactly one evening, it's still around here someplace, I think. I shoot either recurves or longbows. Right now the flavor of the day is an RER recurve, 56#@28" with cedars. Still take the old Rocky Mountain recurve down a couple time a year and hunt with it, 65#@28. I carried that bow every year until 2 years ago since the early eighties. I really can't recall the number of deer it has taken. Still look forward to being in the deer woods every year.
I just turned 50 this year so I guess that puts in the "old" catagory. I hate to say it but there are days I feel more like 60. I've been shooting about 40 years now and hunting almost as long. I'm shooting a 52# Mohawk longbow and shooting better than I ever have. The tough part about hunting at this age is getting my old arthritic knees up in the treestand.
I'll be 66 in Nov. I have had a bow in my hand since I was 8. I currently shoot a 60# DAS Master Hunter.
I just turned 62 this past friday {feel like 82}done to much bull work in the last 47 years.like they say... the golden years...yah rite, but doing pritty good in spite of aches and pains.etc.
Ken, I will be 52 on the 14th of September. I will be leaving for the Rocky Mountains of Montana on the 20th for some Black Bear hunting. I will be hunting with a great friend and we are going to try calling them in. I shoot a 67# longbow and 65# recurve, both are BearsPaw bows made by Neil Jacobson in Montana. Neil wants me to go to Elk camp with him to help pack out meat, will see! :campfire:
63 in November. Been shooting since 8 years old. Still have my first real bow, a Paul Bunyan green solid fiberglass 32# longbow. Boy Scout Camp archery instructor in 1960 was my first formal archery experience. Many bows since both recurves and longbows. Weights rang from 30# to 65# but mostly shoot around 50# now. Never did have or own a compound but do NASP classes with the Genesis youth bow.
66 and have been shooting bows since I was 10, never picked up or shot a compound. Shoot bows from 55# to 60#. My favorite Howard Hill Wesley Special @ 57#.
Listen up, all you young whippersnappers! This is something you can do happily for the rest of your life!!
61 here, feel it and look it, shoot longbow and will 'til I depart, currently a HH at 64 lb. I'm really starting to like lighter weights and will likely settle on 45-50 in the very near future. Always favoured the straight grip Hill style longbows. Been at archery for 45 years. My main interest is hunting and stump shooting.
I'm 54 and have been shooting recurves and longbows since I was 5. Still shooting both up to 90# at this time. Predominately hunt with 65-80#.
Have only shot a cable gun once; 2 shots and handed it back to dealer. Just didn't feel right and I knew it wasn't for me. Bought a Hoyt Rambo Jr. for my oldest daughter when she was 12, she shot it for about 2 months, went back to her recurve and never shot the cable gun again.( she's now 32 )
At least I can raise them right in that respect!
:archer:
Just turned 62 and I feel like a kid at Christmas waiting for the season to start. Thats the good part. The bad part is health problem really suck, but I will be out there. Shooting #45-50 these days and loving it.
I turned 63 last month. I shoot longbows from 41-46#, as I have for years. Started shooting bows at age 4, bowhunting at age 33. I'm planning an elk hunt (my 2nd) for next year, when I will be 64 (assuming all goes well). I have an artificial hip which hasn't slowed me down at this point. I think it's mind over matter, and I plan on hunting with a longbow until I drop. Every year I get more excited as bow season approaches!
61 also, and don't mind taking a "senior" discount wherever it's offered!! Besides, we don't look like a bunch of young kids "trying to look 'mature'" with a cigar and a glass of scotch! been shooting trad since the mid-50's, and I still have the original longbow floating around somewhere! Currently shoot a 57# Wright Firehawk, and a Hatfield 55#TD as a backup, plus a Lajos horsebow, Bickerstaffe longbow, and Internature recurve for fun. I usually don't hunt grouse with a bow, however, since it's difficult to pack the Firehawk on the mountain bike. Nope! Today we're out after grouse/trout again, but I'm taking my little darling, my Belgian 112-year old 28ga side-by-side hammergun, which breaks down nicely in the grouse bag! Gotta Love It!!!! :D
Fast approaching 55. I hesitate to label myself as old, but my body is really been acting up lately, from 30 years of carpentry. As I type this, my left knee is swollen, from god knows what? Going to the doc this morning, hopefully it will be nothing serious.
Oh,got side tracked, been shooting stick and string for about 12 years. Recurves and longbows in the 45 to 55 lb range after shooting the confound for 15 years. The good Lord willing I will be flinging arrows for a very long time!
Will be 60 next month.Started shooting around age 11 and started bowhunting at 15.Up until last year, was shooting 60-66 # recurves.I've been having some shoulder problems this past year so am now shooting 53# and trying to use a more efficient setup rather than worrying about the number written on the bow. This site has helped tremendously in that endeavor. Thanks everybody.
-54 at the end of this month. My son got me totally back into trad after shooting a compound for years. When we first started attending events (Compton, Kzoo), I noticed the majority of people were "older", but it was much more of a friendly, non-competitive crowd. Glad to be back.
Very surprised at the heavy weights you guys are still shooting...I'm shooting a 54#Pittsley very comfortably.
Age 54 -- use to shoot a 70 lb. recurve. Had to drop back to recurves @ 60 lbs and longbows @ 55 lbs draw wt.
Our ranch participates in the Montana Block Management Program that provides hunting access to the public. I have noticed that the vast majority of the hunters that sign in, both during archery and general seasons are in the 50 to 70 age bracket. This age group tends to have more time and money available to devote to hunting, but it appears to me that when we die off -- hunting may be in big trouble.
Will be 64 in January and still pluggin' along. I wear out a 700 pound round bale every two years, and wreak havoc on the stump population in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains.
I look at traditional archery today as a boon time; in the 1960's you had no where near the bows to choose from, of the same quality that's available now. We are living in a great era for this sport....even though some may not know it.
As of today, I'm shooting bows in the 45/50 pound range and shot a bunch. I did those heavier weights when I was younger and full of pi$$ and vinegar, but I've learned my shoulders prefer sensible taxation.
I can still hit a sixty yard target....matter of fact it's almost point-on with my 45# Shakespeare Necedah. As I get older, I appreciate the time the good Lord allows us to participate in this game, and we don't know how many days we have left. So enjoy and share with a friend....and work on those kids.
(http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z318/arrow39/DSCN0788.jpg)Now 70, but 69 last year in the photo. Took two bucks last year with two different 47# longbows. Chemo and a muscle disease keeps me from shooting a heaver bow.
I started with my first longbow at 15. I started shooting by myself with no one showing me. I guess it was in my genes because my ancestors were from England where there are over ten Denton townships and also were at the battle of Againcort in 1415 as archers. My broadheads are sharp and ready for the season to start. Ken
I turned 59 this past June 19 in Quebec on the Bear Quest III killed my first bear on the 21st.
I have been bowhunting since 1974 killed my first deer 1976.Have hunted only with recurves except an all wood Damon Howatt compound in 1976 but sold it before hunting season.Still having fun.Kip
I'll be 55 on October 2 and got my first bow in 1960, age six. Except for a couple of longbows, recurves have always been my thing. Shot a Browning compound for three weeks around '79 or '80 and gave it to my brother-in-law. I own several bows, mostly Bears but have one of Charlie Lamb's Sunbears and a Saxon Kadiak. My main bow is a StyleI B riser T/D currently with a set of Brandon Stahl's limbs- 60", 72#@29". I've had a ball so far and hope to continue for as long as I breathe. Grant
If truth be known, I'd venture that most of the members on this site are "older" shall we say. Statistics show that fewer younger folks are joining the ranks of hunters, particularly traditional bowhunters. We older hunters are literally a dying breed.
I'm 63 and have been shooting sticks since I was about 7. I did have a very brief fling with mechanical arrow launchers in the 70s. Currently shooting ACSs, Hills, Bear T/Ds and a few self bows in the low to upper-50s weight range, about 10# less than five years ago.
Lots more choices today, but there were some pretty good mass produced bows, arrows and other accessories in the 60s and 70s.
One of the biggest changes I've seen over the years is the diminished understanding and stature of hunting/bowhunting in the eyes of the non-hunting public.
61 in a couple of months and looking forward to 62 and being able to retire and getting out of the kitchen.Would like to find a hunting partner about 25 with a strong back...PR
I'm 58 now and comfortably shooting low to mid 50's. Had a bow in my hand since I was a kid and bought my first real bow, a Shakespeare Necedah (still have it), in my teens. Never owned a coumpound and pretty much shoot longbows now. :archer:
62 yrs. young, started shooting in 1956 with a 20# all glass recurve. every kind of bow since, but leaning more toward longbows now in the 50# range.
Just turned 69, shot my 1st deer in in 1973 with a Red wing hunter, now I`am between wheels and 45# recurves thats all I can handle,
I'll be 64 in november-neverowned wheels, although I shot 2 arrows out of one in 1973. Started shooting around 1954 in scouts. 52# 1956 Kodiak, and 1953 bear longbow at 55#.
I turned 55 last month, I have been shooting since I was 8 years old. I have to admit that I did shoot compound for quite a few years. Then back in the 80's I switched back to shooting a recurve until I missed several deer one season, then I went back to my compound.
:knothead:
A little over 1-1/2 years ago I switched back to traditional. So I guess you could say I have been around the block? Twice!
I am back to really enjoying archery again and have made many new friends since attending the Comptons shoot and the PBS odd year gathering. I have the addiction and now have a whole rack full of traditional bows to shoot......you got to love it! :archer:
I'm 62 and shooting more 53-56# longbows than recurves these days. Started off in High School with a green fiberglass Paul Bunyon. Bought a wing gull when I came back from overseas in '68 and still have it. Waiting on my latest Dick Robertson longbow that is cutting it awful close to our archery season. Haven't gun hunted since '86 and just love this traditional archery. Thanks...................Shick
I'm 57...that aint old. My dad is 85. Thats old !!
I'm a year older than Killdeer but haven't held up nearly as well as she has.
Made bows from trees in the woods as a kid, bought my first "real" bow in college, a Bear 76'er. Been shootin' recurves ever since. Man, the past 30 years just flew by!
62 years old. Shoot Dale Dye recurves: 58#, 62# 65#.
I'll be 56 in November, but like most of you don't consider myself "an old goober"! Then again, I'm not pulling the weight you guys are either. I guess I need to start working out more. I stay in the 43# - #48 range on a mix of recurves and longbows that I shoot. Like two of you have mentioned, I still have the 50-# Shakespeare Necedah that I took my first deer with in '68. My go to bow now though is a takedown recurve my dad made me about 35 years ago. I confess I did the wheelie thing for a number of years, but switched back to trad about 3 years ago.
Still waiting for the Wensels to check in on this one. I know they're a couple of old farts:^)
61 years old, been shooting since I was 6 with an old green fiberglas bear , now my grandson has it in his collection, up till I was 50 I shot a 61# widow, and a 66# bob lee, and a 74# hill style longbow, now after open heart, and bad discs in the neck, I shoot a 50# widow,' and a 54 # great northern bushbow, season opens in 3 weeks here in pa. and Iam still like a kid can't wait, You all have a geat and safe season, Jbuck
Older than what?....dirt?....well not yet! Oct.1 they say I'll be 58yrs old. As long as I don't look in a mirror I still say I am under 30! Never enjoyed hunting more now that my weapon of choice is a 55# recurve. I made my first recurve this year. It came in at 63# and I can shoot pretty well...a few times. It will not be a bow that I can shoot 100 times in a row. I also have a 2 yr old grandson who will be coming along into archery...a lot to look forward to!
I'm 70 !
I'll be 71 in Dec. Started out at 6 yrs and been hunting
since I was 12. I shoot recurves and longbows in the 48#
to 55# range. It has been a great 64 years with the bow.

Wow Doc, we have the same birthday. Hey good luck on your hunt. STick a really nice one and show the yougens how it"s done..
Turned 63 on the 30th of August. I have come to prefer longbows, but backed into a corner I'd have to say that I like R/D longbows best.
Don't hunt anymore, but best of luck this fall to those who do.

i will be 56 this month and know i am closer to sunset than sunrise now, even though i still feel like Peter Pan. i started shooting around 1968 or 69...shot intramural archery at UGA in Athens, Georgia. Dan Quillian helped us out with some of our "stuff", and a guy named Garth Fuller (i think was his last name) had a shop in his house in Athens. Several of us would hang out and shoot targets (and the breeze) in the afternoons. i shot a 55lb bow..started out with a Bear and changed over to an American Archery Cheetah Special. Garth was built like a fireplug and shot bows in the 75lb to 90lb range. i currently shoot between 45 & 51 lbs, and my dream is to go on an elk hunt before i'm too old to get around. Good thread..thanks.
73 last March. I started shooting bows'n arraws when I was 5 years old. Won my first archery award at summer camp in 1947 at the age of 11 shooting a wood longbow.
I started bow hunting for deer in 1955. I've always shot traditional, never owned a compound. Currently shooting Shrew longbows in the 55# range
The score written on the back was 189 points

Turned 57 in June, been shooting bows on and off since 1964-65. Currently got a bunch of different bows, longbows and recurves. My body likes 40-50 pounds to shoot on a regular routine. I can do 55-57 but I suffer for it the next day. Been retierd 2 years in October, have tried to shoot everyday since I left work. Except for a few days in the winter I have almost pulled it off...lol
I will be 59 years young on Nov 3. Been shooting longbows and recurves since I was a teenager. My current go to bow is my 62",64# Brackenbury Quest. I shot heavy longbows for many years,72-80#, dropped down a few years ago and switched to recurves. I can still pull and hold a heavy bow but cannot control my shot so 64# is now my heavy bow. Got a rack full of bows and love them all.

I'm 65 (almost 66) and begain shooting in about 1953. When I went into the service I quit shooting for 30 years, but once the kids were grown I started all over again. As a highlight, I won the Denton Hill Eagle Eye last year at the age of 64. I shoot a variety of bows in the 45-50 # range.
I'm a young buck at 46 so not much to add other then this is a fun thread to read and learn from. Ive been shooting and hunting trad for a whole 2yrs now! :)
I turned 52 this year. Hanging a Loc-on on monday my knees reminded me. Currently hunting with a Schafer longbow 55@29. Playing with bows all my life. So many bows... so little time. Anyway look forward to the next 50 years.... :saywhat:
61 now, started shooting when I was twelve, seriously shooting and hunting at 16. I shoot primarily Bear T/D's 55-65# but have always shot traditional even though I've owned a couple compounds. Leaving for Montana for my 25th Elk hunt friday.
I'm 57 and shoot a crowcreek longbow 64" 48lbs. I shot recurves from 1962 until this year and decided I would try a longbow, had always wanted to just never did. Wish I had done it sooner, I love shooting it. Happy Hunting
I am 61 and have been shooting a recurve for over 35 yrs. Still drawing 70# bow as I always have. Actually only have owned 2 bows in my life and still shooting the 2nd one. Still chasing elk, deer, moose, turkey, javelina, etc. every year.
55 and still lovin' life. Shooting a Bob Anderson Zipper Extreme mainly... 55# @28 but I only draw about 27".
Began shooting a fiberglass longbow at 12 years of age and switched to compounds when they first showed up (about 1971???). Have always shot "instinctively" and have been trad only for about 11 years now. Lost track of bow deer kills at about 50... (number of deer, not age).
Enjoying the thread.
58. Still chasing elk; deer; bears: and able to outrun women with children and active ovaries.
I'll be 65 this month. Feel like 35 in my head. Body acts like 75.
I shoot longbows and recurves that are 49-51# @ 30".
Not so hot Hap
almost 51 and the guy looking out doesn't look like the fella looking back, still shooting low to mid 60#s ,and still love watching an arrow arc through the air
I am 63 years old and shoot both a 60# Hunter recurve and a 55# 64" longbow. Have been shooting since I was 8 years old and have never touched a compound arrow flinging device.
I shoot 250 arrows a week from the end of season till the new season starts. I feel better after shooting (mentally and physically)than before.

Ridge Runner, I hear ya. When I look in the mirror some times I wonder who the ole guy is staring back. My brain seems to be in a constant conflict with my body about reality now and 20 years ago.
Spent about a hour shooting my 61 lb recurve tonight and my left elbo is really hurting. But tomorrow or Friday I'll be getting my new 50 Lb Howard Hill wesly special and feel like a little boy Christmas eve.
Im 53 and that feels a lot older than fifty. The older I get the better I was,and I'm starting to think I must have beenpretty good. Hunting almost became a chore last year. Climbing trees and lugging my standskind of got to me. This year it's ground hunting for me. Shooting my backup bow as well. Bear kodiak magmun@ 53lbsand some AD carbons with two blade zwickies. Stopped by the local archery shop this morning and got grumpy just listening to the talk about speed, mechanical headsand trail camera pics.I guess the grumpy part is me just getting older. Canceled my outdoor channels because they are such a turnoff.I think that I am getting old and just not tolerant of some stuff. Beats the alternative.Looking forward to a year of ground hunting.
I'm 57, killed my first deer when I was 8. Haven't stopped yet! I shoot a longbow 50lbs....Archery has sure changed in the 30+ years....TRADITIONAL ARCHERY not so much...we still shot the same basic bow traditional guys did 30-40 years, wooden arrow, mostly the same broadheads, quivers, tabs and gloves....wear about the same cloths, HUNT THE SAME ANIMALS, Same places and sometimes with our oldest friends. The wheelie guys can 100 things in one year.....heck, us TRADITIONAL GUYS...don't have 100 things to change... :campfire:
I'm 56. Started shooting bows when I was 14. Shot a compound for a few years in the early 70's. Went back to recurves, then longbows and back to recurves. Can't remember how many bows I have had. Love the old bear bows. I have 12 kodiaks, two green stripers and a J D Berry longbow. Weight is mostly 42 to 57#. Been down here at GTMO, Cuba for 7 months. The longest I have ever been without shooting a bow. Be home in a month, can't wait to get out and hunt and shoot.
58 and will be 59 in November. Sure did feel that age this last 28 days in Mexico. I thought my days of hard labor were over, but circumstance has changed that. Gotta have a job. LOL
I'm going to jump, one more time.
Great post and I'm reading them all, but at this age, retention is questionable.

be 75 in november. still running cows, bale 500-550 tons of hay a year, change 1 mile of 40' handlines all summer, still kill stuff with a bow.
Sneaking up on the big 60 way to soon but hey its still just as much fun as it ever was. 63#centaur
56# knati,60# palmer.
Working with the Knati hope to kill a few deer with it this fall.
I am 56. Shot a recurve through my teens, then swithched to a compound.
Came back to traditional in 2004 and shoot a Bob Lee Classic recurve, 46#@25" and two super shrew deluxes that are 41#@25" and 43#@25" with cedar arrows. I like the lighter draw weights at this stage of the game, especially in cold weather. I can hold at full draw a good while and try to calm my knocking knees when a deer is coming in.
Still get excited after all these years.
I'm glad to see you old farts are still limping around. It gives us young guys hope for the future. I'll only be 57 in December. The really strange thing is, I can do more pushups and chinups than when I was 20. I'm getting stronger I tell ya.
56 in December. My Father turned 93 this last July.
Grayling Bear Kodiak Hunter 55 #

I'm 55 and stuck in a wheelchair. Actualy started traditional after I got stuck in this stinken chair :banghead: :banghead:

I have always shot traditional except for a one or two season sidestep in the early 1970's.
Things have sure changed. I remember when you could not find a leather back quiver or arm guard. Very few places to build you a bow compared to what there is now.
I am thrilled to see so many new shooters, young and old, embrace traditional.
SO what are ya shooting young fellah??? [/b]
HH Cheetah and Wesley, G&L Longbow, Homemade Osage Longbow and a hatchet selfbow.
I am 52 and have been shooting bows for 42 years. In the stable right now- Fedora Xtreme longbow, Wing gull and a Bear Super Mag "48". I have a Pronghorn coming in a trade and a Belcher Patriot/SSR limbed recurve on order. Archery is a way of life for me.
I'll turn 60 in October. I'mm beginning to feel it a litle bit but still am able to pull the bow and climb in the stand. Have to be sure to always wear a safety harness, though, because I sometimes doze off right after the sun comes up.I shoot a 65# Wesley Special from Howard Hill most of the time. I also use a Deathwish by Steve welte at 59#. Occasionally, I still take out the Bamboo Longhunter at 78#, but it sure takes longer to get conditioned to handle it than it did a few years ago.
I have been shooting traditional for more than 50 years. At 62 I draw 62# on an Old Ben 5000.
Things have really changed. Mostly I notice how little the basics have changed.
I'm 63 and heading out tomorrow to elk hunt in Montana. I got hung up in the heavy longbows back in the 70's...used to hunt an 80# bow. Now 53# @ 28 with 28" draw works just as well. Shoot at least 5 days a week if there isn't a fly rod in my hand...tippit
58 in a couple of weeks, Osage self bow, don't know the poundage but it'll do.
She said, "You're 60????? Boy are you well preserved"!
56, I have been shooting for a bit I have had a Longbow of some kind since I was 14. That was the first bow that was mine, used to shoot dads before that.
All my bows now are in the 45-55# Range now, except one, and that one is not much heavier a 61# Pronghorn.
D
64 and firmly devoted to the principle that I may have to grow older, but I don't have to grow up. Bows range from 40# to 50#.
I'll be 68 in a few months. Have shot longbows and recurves both a lot and in competition. Also killed a few deer and hogs, but I'm short on patience and not a great hunter. I keep coming back to longbows even tho I can always score better in competition with a recurve. Something about a longbow I just love - tho recurves can be beautiful to behold. Now, I shoot about 52 lbs tho I can pull a lot more, but I don't want shoulder trouble that is so common to those who pull the heavier weight too long.
Some of my favorites now are my Ballistic longbow (bamboo),and Dwyer (really sweet)- two very different types. I have too many bows and like a bunch more I don't have time to shoot such as my Assenheimer (sp?)recurve that is super sweet, 2 Ballistic recurves and even a few great self bows such as a VinsonMinor all bamboo "Bow Of Wood" - really smooth,(where did he go?), and a Saluki- the older classic type they quit making.
I used to compete but quit cause I can't beat the younger guys!! Some days I have it and shoot great and other times I don't have it at all, but I mostly do okay and can still kill a deer! I'm wondering how long I can keep shooting. I don't see anybody yet older than me answer here and that's not so good!!! I plan to keep shooting til they carry me off.
Like some of the older bow hunters here Mobydick was still a minnow when I started shooting a bow. I'll turn 68 next March and that will make 59 years behind the bow
I will be 53 in December Shooting a Black Widow 55 lbs @ 28 inches Hope to shot after that whats left
I will be 53 in December Shooting a Black Widow 55 lbs @ 28 inches Hope to shot as long as I can after that whats left
i will be 58 next aug
I'll be 53 in November.
Dog- gone young'uns - :p
I'll be 74 next month (October)
I got thet straight of my I.D. Card (couldn't remember it - ;) )
Oh yeah - all wood bows (love Osage) - primitive (for three years now), aprox. 45# @ 25", Cane (preferably) and Wood arrows. Did I forget anything else? ;)
57 :archer:
Age 58. Started archery in the early 1960's. Never shot a compound. Have several recurves, including my first. Bought a new Martin Dreamcatcher this year, 45#. Shoulder acting up these days, but still get out there.

Hey, this cool. I am visiting my mom this week so I am on her computor.
I am 61 now. I shot trad starting at 8 years of age with my dad. I quit archery in my mid 20's and started again in my early 40's and am still trying to do it right.
I have had both knees replaced, one in Oct. 2005 and the other in May 2006.
I have a few bows that I shoot more than others. The one I shoot the most is a Habu VyperKhan, 49 @ 27, triple carbon. I also shoot my Chek Mate Firebird, 51 @ 28 and a Cascade Golden Hawk Mag, 48 @ 27.
I am in a club, Bowhunters Unlimited. I shoot with Bjorn and his son Adam, Howard, kirby, Robert, and Harvey and many others. Most of us are a bunch of spring chickens that shoot with Harvey. Harvey is 81 years old and a lot of fun to shoot with. He keeps score for our bunch at the meets and always helps out on the work parties. Jim Harris
58 here. Been shooting recurves and longbows since '67.

72 in December. Shoot longbows & recurves, self bows, from 33# to 45#, have about 35 of them, shoot stumps, field rounds, and 3-D, don't hunt big game anymore, just feed them. Love shooting wood arrows. Shooting instinctive competitively off & on since 1958 Bill G.
I'm 53 and have been shooting since age 10. My latest bow is a 52# curly Hickory W/Maple core that I made last year. The cool fall air gets me perked up every year for hunting season.
I plan to take one of my bows with me when I depart for the gates.
Dennis
61, enjoy heavier bows, seem to keep me in better shape.
65yrs young Black Widow 60@ 28 plan to stop when I'm dead
60 last May and shooting 60# self bow, lotta good hunting years left - I hope.
62 and counting. Can still hump the hills, just a little more intelligently now than when I was in my 30s. Shooting 56# currently.
Is 55 old? :saywhat: :biglaugh: My shoulder is getting better. I'm shooting a 47# Widow PLV and a 51# Dyrad Orion static tip recurve.
will be 58 in Oct. Shooting 55 @ 27, kinda hurt all over.
Hope this isn't a double reply. I didn't realize how old I am until now. I am 80 and still shooting but am down to a 40# bow. Have a new bow on order so hope to go for while Yet.
Jack,
Good for you....you just made my day. It does my heart good to know that you're 80 years young and still going strong.
The rest of us can only hope and pray we make it that long, much less still be able to enjoy archery.
Billy
I'm 57 been shooting for 41 years. Shot compounds for several years but I'm back to longbows and recurves.
I'm 59 years young, feels like I'm 20 when I'm shooting but when I have to get up for work I feel 120. Shooting my new Morrison Shawnee with foam core and carbon limbs, 45@28.
~Rich~
Good for you Jack! I hope to be shooting when I'm 80
I'll be 52 October 13th. I am currently shooting my 64", 62#, Border Griffon longbow.
Keep on shooting Jack. I'm 65 and shoot recurves between 45 and 50#. Started as a boy in 1955 with a Ben Pearson lemonwood longbow.
51 here. I feel like a pup compared to some of you guys.
I'm shooting a Martin Savanah at 50 pounds and a Bingham Projects Take-Down Longbow (the first one I made) that is 55 pounds.
53 in December. My go to bow is a Shrew Classic Hunter @ 70 pounds. Have been hunting with traditional equipment for 12 years.
Jack,
Shooting 40# at 80 - Lead on, Sir. We're following you, hopin' to keep up.
I just saw this thread and had a chance to read through it. I found this very interesting to say the least. I turn 65 in a couple weeks and tell everyone I feel fine but just look like s***. Being realistic, my joints sometimes hurt but I think mostly it's because of high mileage. I've always shot heavier weights until I broke my left shoulder in the mid 1980's. Then dropped back to low 60's until I healed. Then went back to the 70 lb range until the mid 1990s. In the late '90s I dropped back to the mid-low 60 lb. range. Then in 2001 I severely broke my right arm and needed a dozen screws and a couple plates to fix it. Therefore I kept in the low 60 lb. range. Then in 2007 I "inherited" one of Paul Schafer's own personal bows that is marked at 70 lbs. but everyone seems to think it's a little heavier. I find my arm hurts after shooting only a dozen arrows at a time whether I'm shooting 56 lbs. or 70 lbs. So I practice just a few shots at a time such as roving/stump shooting, plus limit my shot distances. In fact, I passed up a solid B&C whitetail standing broadside at 28 yds. two years ago because I didn't feel comfortable at that range. Then in the spring of 2008 I started hunting with Paul's old bow. I killed three big bucks with it last year and plan on hunting mostly with it again this fall. I just like the flat trajectory and blasting through stuff again. I think a lot of it is likely psychological but I have a lot more confidence in the heavier poundage and flatter shooting arrows. I guess I'm weird but I think I'll continue to shoot the heavier weights and limit my shots until I feel I can't handle them ethically anymore. Best of luck to all. BW
Great thread, good to see our leaders and their equipment.
I am 50 and have been shooting bows for about half that time. I never considered myself as "older" or even semi mature until we were blessed with two granddaughters last winter!
I shoot recurves and longbows in the mid 40's every day if I can. I hunt the local whitetails, killed a couple javelina in Texas, and have recently discovered hog hunting at Ray's. But my passion was and always will be bowhunting groundhogs!
Dave
I will be 68 come Christmas eve. Shooting bows has been a lifetime enjoyment and I will continue as long as I am able. Used to shoot bows in the 65 to 70 pound range, now have dropped down to 59 to 62 pounds. I have been pretty heavy for most of my life and it is taking a toll on my back and knees. Still do a Colorado elk hunt every year but the mountains get a little steeper each time. I still look forward to every season and will be after our Illinois whitetails in a few days
Decades seem to go by like seasons used to. I will be 50 this year. It did not seem to be a big deal until I noticed the generation ahead of me not doing the things we used to do with ease. I have shot stick and string for 20 years and went to longbows 5 years ago. Nice and light, just a pleasure to hold and shoot. My wife (God bless her) urged me to not wait any longer to go to Alaska. I went with a great friend 10 years older than I, and tough as nails. I'll never forget the hunt. I plan on throwing arrows every day for a long, long time.
Kevin
I'm a young 62. Will be hunting with a 57@28 HH "Longbowman's Choice" this season. You'll love your new HH "Wesley Special". Great bows. Real killing machines.
I'm 43 all my longbows are from 54 to 57#
I will be 55 next birthday. Been shooting arrows since I was around 8 or so. I have an 83# Big River longbow. Course. . . I can't pull it.
I tend to shoot from 55 - 70 pounds, longbows and recurves.

Way to go 2fletch. Quite the accomplishment.
One more thing. Most of the guys I hang out with in archery are 15-20 years younger than me but when we shoot or just hang out age doesn't seem to matter much. We are all just fellow archers.
65 next month. Been shooting since the early 80s, hunting for the past 7 or 8 years. Shoot a Widow PSR 50# @ 28, Martin X200 50# @ 28, and a longbow 46# @ 28. I'm still going strong, but putting my 75# canoe on the truck the other night d#$n near killed me. I need to start lifting weights again.
I'm 52 and started out with a Damon Howatt in the early 70s and went on to shoot a compound until 2002 when I suffered a back injury. Hunted with a crossbow from 2002 until 2004. In 2005 I was finally able to pull a real bow back without a whole lotta pain in the back and neck, and bought my Allegheny Mountain Bow and never looked back. If I never kill another deer again in my life I don't care. Just carrying that bow brings me back to my days of missing deer with that Damon Howatt and of much more peaceful and simpler times. :)
Hell Im still youngster...54.. :)
45, at least until NOV.
I'm almost there! I'll be 48 next month :)
Hey I'm 58 and loving it.. except the arthritic wrist and gray hair.
Spent 17 days at 10,000 feet hunting Elk deer and bears this month, alone. Got close to 3 bulls. Got a mule deer and got 15 yards from a bear.
I walk less and see more.

67 hear! Been shooting 56 yrs. Shoulder spur dropped my 3-D bow to 35 lbs. Biff
55 years old and shooting for 50 years. I am shooting a 62", 60# Jack Harrison El Lobo and HSS.
10/10/1959 will make me 50 in a couple of weeks. Going to where I grew up in New York 10/14 for my birthday and spend 10 days with my buddy trying to get one of them eastern whitetails. I shoot a Robertson 60" 51#
I think they call it vintage these days. ;)
Just look on that big auction site at some of the bows from we were a lot younger . . .they're all "vintage".
As Mark Twain said "If I'd known I was gonna live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself!"
Been shooting stick bows 55 yrs.. Now #49 - #63 bows, but I find the mid #50 bows a lot more comfortable lately.
66 yesterday.

59 years old last June. My favorite bows are two Morrison Shawnee longbows. I have limbs for them from 47 to 57 lbs. Shot compounds for over 25 years, but after trying going back to Trad, I sold both of them and haven't missed them a lick. Trad is just so much more fun and challenge.
50 years young come this spring, started shooting a dogwood selfbow in the 60's,recurve in the 70's and got talked into one of the compound bows in the 80's.Bought a Rudderbows tri-lam english longbow about two years ago at 65#s and loved it!
I sold all my modern stuff and started making all my own bows out of red oak and cherrywood.I like my bows 55#'s to 65#'s.I've now started learning how to knapp my own arrowheads.
67 by the time archery season gets into full swing. Began shooting bows with my two cousins back in 1954.
My hunting bow this year is a 58# @ 28" Wesley Special. Had to drop back in weight a few years back. Till then I was shooting an 82# @ 28" Hill bow made by Ted Kramer. Tried a compound once for about a year, then gave it away. Met Jeff Massie in 1992. Really took a liking to him and his bows. Guess I probably bought a dozen or more bows from Jeff till he decided to give bowmaking up. Went back to shooting the Hill bows early this year and have stuck with them.
I'm 71 and shooting 55#-60# recurves and long bows. Bear T/D's, Shrew's, Black Widows to name a few.................
I'll turn 62 during the height of the rut here in Kansas, November 14th. But 62 ain't old....if you're a tree or dirt!!!
I turned 67 last Feb. I've always shot
Recurves & Longbows, never owned a compound, and have been shooting them for 50 years or so.
I shoot bows in the 60# t0 65# range, and hope to keep doing it for a long time yet.
I'm 54 and I shoot a 56" 54# bow, dont feel any older ( or act any older according to my wife) but that guy in my mirror every morning is get'n gray.
As of August 31st, I'm 61 years young. My mind still making promises that my body tries to keep! I'm familiar with that guy in my mirror, He looks more and more like my dad every day!
Last Saturday I hit 55... I've been shooting traditional equipment since 1960, and have been shooting Silvertip takedowns since 1985. All my bows are in the 63-71# range.
Shoot Straight,
-Don
Just signed up for SSI and will be 62 Nov 7th.
Shot trad before wheelie things were invented. I switched to wheels for 15 years and never felt like I was carrying bow, started carrying a bow again 20 years ago.
not old just older than i was 65 started making bows 6th grade, havent grown up yet. loyd
I am 54. Started making and shooting trad bows in 1994 after the gadget years of compounds. Nothing like hunting with something self made.
56yrs, and just starting out!!! living in the uk has robbed my of bowhunting (illegal), but i bought a house in bulgaria (don't ask!!) and i can bowhunt there!! so i'm practising like mad!!
brumski
Just signed up for Medicare last week. You have to do that three months before you turn 65. This coming November I turn 65. One more year to 66 and I hope to semi-retire. I guess you don't ever get to fully retire. At least some of us don't. Like some others here I began shooting archery before there were such things as compounds and like most ended up shooting them for awhile back in the late 70's and early 80's. Became disillusioned with them and went back to the purer more fun traditional aspect of archery and never regretted it.

Great topic it's great to see all the guy's and gal's that are still shooting at any age.
You ask me what kind of bows I'm shooting early, I shoot a couple of Morrisons, A&H's and a few other custom bow's all in the mid 50's :bigsmyl:
This thread is still running? Dang...lots of geezers here, I guess.
At fifty-three, I am hoping I can still shoot at eighty, like Jack. I am shooting a variety of recurves and longbows, and am comfortable at 46# at my draw. It is a weight that I can shoot all day, for days on end. I have too many bows. I keep telling myself that I oughta sell some bows, but every time I set about getting ready to begin to commence starting to see to that, I find something else I have to try. I have a bunch, and have run plumb out of room. But there is another in the classifieds that...
