Well, I have a Bear tag for the 3rd. hunt period for Bergland BMU. I was looking for anybody in the area that can point me in the right direction for a DIY hunt. I have never hunted that unit and am looking forward to the blind challenge(with a little help). Then my next dilema is that my bear hunt starts on Sept. 25th. and the Deer opener is only 5 days and 500mi. later. So I have a question.
SHOULD I STAY AND HUNT DEER ALSO, OR, SHOULD I BAG IT FOR HOME and hunt my known stands and farms. I live in clinton county and we have some dandy bucks and about a zillion deer all told. Like I said I have never hunted that area of DA UP! but I may just try and give it a go.
What say you?

I'd stay up and hunt the big woods, it's always special to me even though you may see less deer..lots of time to hunt the patchwork fields/woods down home.

I've hunted the Bergland unit a couple of times but only in the first and second season. We hunted just south of Ontonagon where a friend owns a deer camp. Had lots of company in the area we hunted on both occasions. If I were to ever hunt bears in the UP again I would look towards the Porcupine Mountains and get away from the roads and trail systems where ATV's have access.

I grew up in Michigan and lived in northern MI many years. while the deer are thick as fleas in your area, I would definitley forego the sure thing for the expeience of hunting in the big woods of the western UP. You will pobably see fewer deer but have a much richer experince. It aint always about putting meat in the freezer or antlers on the wall. good luck and great hunting

Yip, It is hard to get me to come home once I get up there. I rekon I will have go for a bit of woods walk while I am at it. Deer, grouse and bear. what else do I need? maybe a fish or two eh? I think I will stay for a few extra days.
Thanks for the advice all.

I am not sure if I will go on the ground or not, It will depend on the set up. two years ago I hunted bear on the ground with an AMBUSH, but I was stillabove the bait because I was on a bluff. That was a cool set up. If I can find something like that again I will. How you been man? I have not seen you around this summer.

Chuck, trying to pick a spot myself. Sitting on 8 points and I havn't been able to commit. I think once you spend a few days up there chasing them there bears you'll see enough of the area to make a good call on if you should stay or go. Two years ago I hunted the Stonington Peninsula with a buddy of mine. Took a nice healthy doe but our deer sightings were way down. He called me a month later and told me they found a bear den about 80 yards from the treestand I was hunting, with the big fella in it. Never saw him but my buddy thinks that's why the deer were skirting that particular stand that's always been one of their hottest for good bucks. Good luck.

Thanks Dog. If the home front can maintain for a few extra days I figure I will stay.
