Recommendations?? Fixed or Mechanical.
Not mechanical. Even with super-fast compounds, they often malfunction (according to my mate Tony, from his early compound bowhunting days).

Did you happen to mean replacable blades instead of mechanical? Just curious. If so, I'd still recommend the fixed blade options, as they're just that little bit tougher (in some cases much tougher) than replacable blade options.
I wouldn't shoot mechanicals on a trad bow. I think you loose too much energy. I don't even like them on compounds, but the spit fire and rage are ones I would trust if I did. I do like Muzzy trocar tip heads if you are looking for replicable blade heads. For fixed blade cut on contact there are a lot of great options. I like the Phantoms and Stingers I have been working with for this year.

What are you planning on hunting and what's your bow weight and draw length?
Whitetails...58 51/28 30 inch draw. Been using compounds for 25+ so this is new can't hardly wait. Actually getting to be a pretty good shot, we'll see when it's for real.
With those specs and that 30 inch draw...you got a lot of choices for whitetails.
Personally, I like big chop broadheads for whitetails. 4 blades or WIDE 2 blades.
Need to get what ever head you choose matched to your arrows so they are spined correctly for your bow. You want a clean flying arrow no matter the head choice.

do you know how to sharpen broadheads or do you want to buy something thats ready out of the package? what size fieldpoint are you currently using?
right now without knowing too much I'd say Razorcap, Muzzy phantom or stinger 4-blade for an out of the package head OR a snuffer or woodsman with the right insert for a broadhead that you need to sharpen..
I just started using muzzy phantoms and i like how they are shooting out of my bow, I am going for Elk so it's only 2 blade here, but if I were going for deer or bear I'd have no problem shooting the VPA terminator's from git-r-done

2 blade fixed and KME broadhead sharpener system.
Obviously fixed with a trad bow. I know Ashby had the recent article about mechanicals in T.B. and had a poor report, but my compound buddies use that 2 blade Rage head and those produce wound channels on whitetails unlike anything I've ever seen. A legit "wow!" factor.
I'd never suggest them for a trad bow, on multiple levels and for multiple reasons, but I totally disagree with what I read in T.B. on mechanicals as far as higher poundage compounds on whitetails are concerned. They are wicked out of that setup. So if you have compound shooting friends at your whitetail camp, I wouldn't question their using those 2 blade Rage heads. In fact, after seeing what I've seen, I'd suggest anyone using a compound on whitetails use them.
As far as you, Steelforce makes great, hunting sharp from pack 2 blades in many weights, 200gr and 300gr, and the Steelforce Phathead 4 blade in 145gr is an incredible head.

I think your broadhead choice in a fixed blade head should be limited by your ability to get it sharp.
Razorcap (3 bld.), Phantom (2 or 4 bld), and the Magnus Stinger are all great choices for a ready out of the pack head.
As suggested owning a quality broadhead sharpening system like the KME will open the entire spectrum of broadhead choices.
Personally I'm like Terry Green in that I like big broadheads for all big game. I typically shoot setups that get a 600+ grain arrow moving to about 175 to 185 fps. Which is an important consideration in broadhead choice.
I can shoot ANY broahdead I want, but prefer the Magnus I w/bleeder.
