How many experience trad gangers use tip protectors. The tips are so good looking I hate to cover them up but at the same time I dont want to damage my tips while stoking the fire or poking my brother in law in the eye (he hates that) seriously do you use them or not and if so what type. :smileystooges:
I use one, make it myself! Pretty simple to make out of leather and stitch it up on my bottom tip.
Hey bud how ya doing only a few days and you will be at Mauthe. I have made a few out of deer hide scraps but most of the picks I see here seem not have many in use.
I use an old plastic one that came on a Martin I got used a while back. It gets recycled around to whatever bow I'm hunting with at the time.
I hunt in pretty rough terrain, and I prefer not to use them. I am simply more careful with how and where I put the bow down.
I use em.....rubber one on the 62", and a moose leather one on the 64"
rubber.
I use a rubber one.Easy to transfer from bow to bow if you want.I also cut mine in half.Because if i don`t,the rubber goes up the string loop a little. Then when i shoot i hear the rubber make noise as the string loop stretches the rubber.Even with the rubber on the tip,i still put the tip on my foot most of the time.Just a habit i guess.

Have used them in the past, but no longer! Make sure you remove and clean the inside and the bow tip once in a while. One small grain of sand can wear your bow string loop to the point it can break. Had one on a 63" 55lb longbow, and it cut the string!!! Lucky the bow was just hangin' on a bow rack! Ended up 20 feet out in the yard!!! Bow was OK...but not a good thing!
I make my own from leather scraps. In my limited experience, they need to fit just so or they will affect performance. I made three before I got "the" one that one of my longbows liked. The others make it shoot with some additional noise.
longarrow, that is a scary story. I guess i will take mine off for a cleaning.
I use the rubber covers that come on air nozzel triggers sounds crazy but works like a charm, I take every one I can get from the guys at work but... I shoot recurves and I'm sure longbows would prefer something differant! works really good on a curve though!! Jason
I don't use one, because it can throw the timing of the limbs off by adding weight to one end.
I use a leather tip protector on my bottom tip.
Funny, you should post this thread today. I presently use a black rubber one that came with my Widow but I'm going to try something today and see if i like it better. Going to lowe's in a few minute and buy a can of plastic kote and try dipping the tip in just to the string groove. I think i will wax the ti first to form a barrier between the tip and the plastic. My thinking is this will allow me to remove it easily. I think this will also be lighter than the tip protector i have now. What do you guys think? Will it work?
I have rubber ones on my recurves and my sons' bows too.Besides protecting the tip it keeps the loop in the string nocks while stringing/unstringing.
Saw a guy,at the Muzzy shoot, take a sitting down shot and hit his lower limb tip on the stonewall in front of him taking out a big chip...might not have happened if he had a tip protector.
yeah... protect your tip. ;)
Ok guys I bought the Plastic Dip an it looks good a real form fit and i believe it will be less weight to it no way to know for sure but it a lot less bulky. I waxed the tips real well before dipping to create a barrier between the plastic and the wood, so i think it will rub off if i need it to. This will also do away with the concern of sand or moisture between the tip and the slip on protectors.
yip i use one
rubber and insulation tape
I use the rubber slip on ones on all my recurves...both tips.
If they upset the timing of your limbs, your bow is way to finicky. As was mentioned earlier, if you use them, take them off after season as moisture can lay in there for a long time.
I use a layer or two of duct tape just for the season.

I use the black plastic kind. I often put one on each end of my Kanatis because I sometimes set them upside down to keep the nocks and fletches from getting wet or muddy. With short longbows the nocks in a bow quiver are pretty close to the end of the bow.
I agree with George though. Those things are so light, I sure can't tell any difference shooting with or without them.
I have read where some people use a rubber nipple from a baby bottle, cut to the size the limb tip.
Personally, I don't use tip protectors on my bows.
i use rubber protectors on both ends. i usually cut them down alittle. i only use a half sized one on top. i shoot out back of my house OFTEN and i leaned my bow up against numerous bad things - the house, cedar fence, chain link fence, swing set. and that doesn't count the number of times i walk through a door and my top tip hits it b4 i can push it open.i noticed years ago the back side of my top tip scuffed alot.
Don't use them on my selfbows, never could think of a good reason to. Even when I retire a bow after several years of hard use I can see no wear or damage to the tips.
With bad legs, I use my bow as a walking stick every time I go out. I've never had a problem beyond scratching the tips, after decades of doing this with multiple bows. It seems to be harder on the string than the bow, especially dacron. I guess my bows have all been finicky- I can feel it when I shoot if mud has built up on the end. :)
If you use one, use the rubber/plastic typ that have a hole in the bottom.
I don't use them. They hold moisture and grit, and can reak havoc on your string or limb tip.
Eric, next time you need to retire one of your selfbows, I'll give you a mailing address; even pay the shipping. 8^).
Rubber, but I will clean it more often from now on .Thanks longarrow.
Heat shrink tubing works great! Just get the size that will fit over the limb tip and cut it long, put a hair dryer to it and presto! If you ever need to replace the string you just simply cut it off. I wouldn't recommend doing this with a new string until you have shot it in and get the brace height set right. Otherwise it works great.

Ditto. Dad had his tip overlay come off during a 3 day hunt. Not a situation I want to be in if I can avoid it.
I dip mine in whatever finish I have around. I do it few times a year.
God bless,
Jose
Been using the plastic dip for years. I only dip a very small amount of the tip, maybe 1/4 inch, to keep it off the ground. Works well and mosture seems not to be a problem.
