Title: Stand names
Post by: John Krause on September 03, 2009, 08:38:00 PM
I think last year there was a great thread on stand names. Some are named after historic events or kills, some are named by their location. It really cuts down on the long description of where some action took place. It was really good. Post a pic if ya got one.  Let's do it again..

I'll start

Wooded food plot stand- Self expanatory
Hidden spring stand
Black hole stand
Rub City
Spinn's stand- nickname
S. Cutline stand
Mossy Knoll Creek stand
Spoon-It's in a bowl
3 stump
Triple X- Bud watched a doe get bred
Lookout- covers a big area
Triple tree
Nine squirrel- First sit bud had nine squirrels in sight at one time
Springhole

What ya got?

The Yellow chair stand I mentioned above is named after an old fashioned steel lawn chair that sets at the base of a giant white oak on some public land near me. This is one of those chairs like the ones my grandmother had on the front porch and probably weighs 40 pounds and is a loooooong way back in there. Whoever originaly packed that thing in must have had one heck of a workout!

Love reading the names and back stories.

The "postage stamp" stand refers to where the stand is. We hunt a farm with a large rectangular block of woods. In the top right corner there is a small block of woods that juts up and out like a postage stamp on an envelope. Nice and thick in there with lots of deer.

Ours are kind of tame apparently...

Secondary hunting location:
* Dylan's hollow
* The beach
* Northern point
* The flats
* Eastern trail
* Oak knoll

Our primary hunting location has these (and others):
* The corner
* The big oak
* The middle ridge
* The blowdown

But my favorite is

* The dirty branch - my son had done some pruning on a huge blown down oak so that he could nestle back in there and ambush a couple of trails.  After sawing through one biggish branch, he sprinkled a pinch of dry dirt on it - to camouflage it.  Not sure why, but that just tickled me.

My favorite stand name in my woods is the Opossum Stand. It's a ladder stand and my buddy was hanging it. He finished setting it against the tree and climbed up to set the straps. Just when he got eye level with the platform a huge opossum had his teeth out and was hissing something awful from inside a hole in the tree that was unnoticed until then. He screamed like a litle girl and just about fell out of the stand. I fell over laughing!!

Another thing we do is name logging roads and main trails.  This also stops alot of confusion about where something happened. Where did you see that buck? He was on Dip road, halfway up the hill towards West Main.

We started doing this #1 it's fun for us. #2 there was a guy that hunted with us for a while that when you would ask him where he hunted or where he saw something he would go on for 5 min trying to describe the place where he was and then you still weren't sure of where he was talking about. Know anybody like that?   :)

So we have:

Mossy Knoll Rd
West Main
Dip Rd
Rutt Road
East Main
Shed Alley

We have a couple more trails we need to name.

I picked a tree out for Biggie Hoffman one year back in the late '90s that he killed his biggest buck ever from. We actually had two stands in that bowl we called "Biggies Upper Lip" and "Biggies Lower Lip". A big tree fell naturally this spring (Biggie had nothing to do with it) that changes the movement patterns, so we pulled the original stands and placed a killer stand half way between the upper and lower lips. We've renamed the new stand "Biggies Dentures". bw

I could teach even you to post pics.
You could teach me how to read deer woods.

I have been hunting the same place since 1986. Most of my stand sites are named for deer that I have killed there. Alphonse Pass,

Clyde's Point,
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/Killdeer/Hunting%20and%20Camp/2007%20November%20Hunt/Img_5060ClydesPoint2.jpg)

PeeWee Stand,

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/Killdeer/Hunting%20and%20Camp/SunriseatPeeWee2004.jpg)

Yorick's Gulch. Then there is The Pawn Shop, a blowdown of three cherry trees with a pit at the base of the upflung roots.

There is the Shelter Ridge, behind the chestnut Adirondack, First and Second Horn of the Shelter Ridge, and The Bowl. The Stadium. Spaghetti Junction (tangled trails in a major junction of creeks and ridges). Heart Attack, Mac's Ridge, Turkey Ridge, The Finger, Plane Wreck, The Puffball Tree. The Bears' Poo Hall. The Beaver Ponds are now a meadow, but the name remains.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/Killdeer/Hunting%20and%20Camp/2007%20November%20Hunt/Img_4965.jpg)

Sweet, sweet to think on these names and feel the places they represent.

3rd Clearing (see a pattern here)
River Crossing (there's more than one, but everyone knows where this one is)

The Finger

The Parking Lot
Little Feet's Chair

Little Feet is an 80yo man who has a camp near us.  When we first started hunting in our area, we would always run into his little feet prints.  There was seemingly nowhere you could go where Little Feet hadn't already been.  Just when you thought you had gotten to a secluded, far away spot...... there were Little Feet's tracks.  We met him after a few years of calling him Little Feet and the name stuck.  Now we all just call him Feet. Now that he's older, we don't see his tracks like we used to.  He pretty much hunts his chair now out back of his camp a little ways up the mountain.  :campfire:

Most are easy to figure out why.
High Back
Fied Stand
No Name
Trail Stand
Old Mans Stand. This one got its name because my late Uncle took a kitchen chair to the top of the hill behind his house 20/25 years ago. Shot a nice ten point and never brought the chair back home. The rusted frame is about 20 yards from the stand. Feels special every time I hunt here.

Hmmm never really contemplated the stand names we use but they have become common knowledge around the campfire at what has become our little camp (The Broken Arrow Lodge) which consists of some old military surplus gear and what ever we find comfortable to bring along.

Five Fingers (five little fingers of varying cover come together at this point)

14 Point blind (yeah one member of our party saw this toad!)

Ivy Tree (you guessed it, one bad case of poison ivy hanging this stand)

Barbs Blind (dont argue with momma she shot a deer there and by gods its her blind now)

8 Point blind (seems like anyone can take an 8 point from this blind)

River Bottom (no explanation needed)

The Beer Tree (former hunter on the property had approximately 8 silver bullet cans at the bottom of this tree and as many stuffed into a hollow in the tree.  Kinda makes you wonder were they really there to hunt or just to hide a drinking problem?)

There are more but they havent really earned names at this point.

The kid's stand - kid missed an elk from here

Rattlesnake - NOT a good way to find a stand name

I've got more in my brain somewhere.
