I have been making 6 strand strings with D97, reinforcing the loops to 12 strands. I have been reading about 450+ and was thinking of trying it. I know that 450+ is stronger per strand but what other differences are there with the 450+? What about performance, will it perform the same? or will it be faster, slower, wtih everything being equal. Is 450+ thicker than D97? Any info from those that have tried the two would help me.
Thanks

I'm no string maker but I'm curious are you building for longbows or recurves? I've always
used 450+ on my longbows "less creep" and dyna97
on my recurves easier on the tips, having a little
creep.
450+ is thicker then D97,when I make a 12 strand D97 and measure it to be .080 diameter. And on my 6 strand 450+ it is .060 diameter.Half the number of strands but only .020 smaller.450+ is a strong string and has no creep. For me when I make a skinny string I like 450+,most of my D97 are 12 strands and with .024 Halo gives me the nock fit I like. With 6 strand 450+ I double serve, first with .018 No.62 and then .022 serving fits my nocks good.I guess 6 strand 450+ might be slighly faster then my 12 strand D97 but I haven't shot through a chrono to see. They are both quality strings but I can't imagine there will be a big difference with low stretch strings maybe a few fps.I just haven't tried any low strand D97 to compare.
You know that unless your shooting 120 lbs you don't need 12 strands.
Scott, I am making the string for a 58" centaur bow.
JRY, Thanks for the tips. I may have to try the 450+.

Aldo,
If you are looking for a little better performance, go with 8125. Its a thinner version of D-97. You can buy 1/8lb spools from Lancaster Archery for around 27.00
Running Buck,
Thanks for the info, is 8125 as strong per strand as D97?
No , actually d-97 is 23% stronger than 8125, but 8125 still tops a fuzz over 100#s break strength per strand vs. d-97's 125 I use 10 strands of d-97 and 12 0f 8125 for about the same breaking strength of 1250 on recurves, for longbows 6 strands of 450+ ( breaking strength of 155#s per strand) padded loops of course, used that combo on longbows up to 73#s hope that helps
So what are you guys padding 450+ with and how many extra strands? Roughly (according to Johns calculations) 10 strands of D97 would turn out to be about the same size as 6 strands of 450+ and 8 strands of 450+ the same as 12 strands of D97. As I understand it a lighter string is a faster string so would a string of 12 strand D97 and 8 strand 450+ be equal in speed with the 450+ having no creep? For grins and giggles I made an 8 strand 8125 string (padded) and that was scary skinny, but performed really well.
I have actually been making 6 strand D97 padding the loops to 12 I have used both D97 and B50 for padding. Using this on 52# longbow with good results but seems to keep stretching a bit. This is why I was going to try the 450+ but if I could get away with 6 strands of 8125 it may be a better option. What do you guys think?

6 strands of 8125 might be pushing it. I remember reading somewhere that the actual strength of the strings aren't correct. I think that's why BCY removed that info from their site. When I make string from D97 I make them a little shorter because there is some stretch to even out all the twist and such. After wards my string length stays consistent. I had the same experience with 8125. I can't speak for 450+. Good luck with whatever you decide.
It seems in my experience that 450+ is a little quieter than d97 on my recurve. It seems softer and thus produces less noise from string slap on the limbs. It's just my expeirince.
Aldo,
The smallest I would go with 8125 is 8 strand. This is still way smaller then 6 strands of D-97. I shoot 8 strand with 8 strand of B-50 padded loops up to 54lb that is with both recurves (widow and morrison) and longbow(morrison) I have tried 6 strand and would only go that small on 45 lb or less. I have a 52lb cheyenne that broke a 6 strand string just above the serving, so I stick with 8 or better these days. As stated before, the published breaking point of a given string is not real world. JMHO
for what its worth, i shoot 6 strands of 8125 (padded to 16) on my 49# acs. never ha d a problem. fast, quiet, and no vibration at all. its just a little scary to look at!
CJC, I know what you mean, they do look scary. I get a lot of comments on the 6 strand D97 strings I make. I may try the 8125 since 8 strand is still smaller than 6 of D97. Thanks for everyones help.
