Title: Elk setup question???
Post by: blueslfb on August 19, 2009, 07:21:00 AM
I have had to drop weight due to an injury and I just want to make sure I have an adequate setup.

55lb @ 27" Dryad longbow shooting 28 1/4 CX 150 with 50grn insert and 100grn adapter with a 130grn STOS b/h. Total arrow weight is approx 600grns.  The arrows seem to shoot hard and I have good arrow flight.  I feel I have a good setup to take down an elk but would like some feedback from the guys that have been there done that.

Also could someone tell me what my FOC would be on my arrows.  I shoot 3 5" fletches with a wrap on the 28 1/4" CX 150 with 275grns up front after b/h's are sharpened.

You are good to go.

Your FOC question is one of geometry, not theoretical math... balance your arrow and mark the balance point, then measure your arrow length. Balanced in the middle would be zero FOC and balanced at the point would be 100% FOC. You will be somewhere between and FOC is expressed as the percentage forward of the middle.

Last season my wife carried 42 pounds @26" with a 500 ceders and magnus 2-blade. I had complete confidence in her set up and her ability to to do her part with in the 15 yard max we agreed to. Your set-up will be fine.

Sean-

Good to hear from you again buddy, hope that things are good.  You should be fine with your setup, 600 grains at a decent speed with a sharp two blade should down an elk no problem.  Good luck this year, where you headed?

My first bull was with a 49# longbow 475 grain homemade cedar arrow with a wicked sharp 2 blade Zwicky eskimo.  17 yards quartering away, snapped the shaft behind the head because the eskimo was burried in offside shoulder.  Bull only went 35 yards in about 5 seconds.  Pick your shot and you are more than good to go!
Good luck to you

Thanks for the info guys!

Mitch, thanks I appreciate that. I am headed back to Montana to chase elk around Jefferson City.  Can't wait 20days and counting.
