Post by: magnus on August 18, 2009, 10:05:00 PM
After dinr asked her if she wanted to shoot , n she said don't I need training I am a bad student ya know! I said I'm a bad teacher let's go. Well an hour later n she was hittin the block at 8 yards n havin a ball! The shed gas a few more holes in it but not more than I've put in it!  Hopein she gets into it so we can do more together . I get her a bow suited for her n we mite have another archer in the midst. Great form n concentration even with a 45# bow drawn half way!  Keep yur fingers crossed!

Just be patient with her and make it fun!

Best of luck, it will make hunting time a bit easier to come by.

Thats Great Mangus! I got my girlfriend into bow hunt'n. She prefers her compound over the recurve but after Fridays bowfishing trip and her watching me snap shoot them gar before she could get her compound drawn, I think she is rethinking her choice. lol

Although I'm a longbow guy, I think the ILF suggestion would be a real good one.   Get an ILF riser and some low, target weight limbs that she can hold and shoot easily.   She can enjoy the learning, backyard shooting and even 3D with that.  If later she wants to move up to legal hunting weight for your area, the switch to heavier limbs is easy and she doesn't have to change bows.   Of course, if she eventually gets interested in the challenge of the true longbow, so much the better 8^)

Or buy her a vintage target weight bow online that won't break the bank in 30# or so.  If she likes it and needs to move up sell it.  If she doesn't like it, sell it.

She's way overbowed now and that isn't conducive to good shooting or fun.

This past fall my girlfriend wanted to go along with me to a 3d shoot (she's was tired of being a 3d widow and knew I wasn't going to stop) and saw how much fun we had. When we got home she wanted to try it. I had a #35 recurve and we headed out to my backyard range. She had fun but I could tell she was struggling a bit. So for an early Christmas present I had a #25@26" long bow built for her and she has been shooting just about every weekend with us ever since. In fact, to illustrate how bad she is hooked, 2 weeks ago there wasn't a shoot anywhere in the area and she pouted all day.

I agree with the others that she pulling to heavy a bow. Another advantage of going to a lighter weight is it will be a lot easier for her to build the correct form. Trust me having a significant other as your shooting buddy is a very good thing.

The only problem with that is somewhere down the road she might be giving you that, I'm picking a spot look.

I must say mine has grown into the sport as well and if i can give you any advice...keep it fun.  Target shooting got boring with my girl so we went to stump shooting.  That worked. Oh and dont let her watch MBBIII...she hated ROD b/c he screwed her shooting up haha.  She shot like crap after watching that DVD and put the bow down for over a month then i had to trick her into shooting again.

I rather enjoyed the DVD though LOL.

Anyhoot keep it fun and she will stick with it...also gear her up properly no hand me downs.

Matthew, Keep baiting that hook and reel her in nice and easy...I know it gets exciting but don't ripp the hook out her mouth...Remember to use bigger bait too...Get her some pink fletched arrows and put them in a vase...Most women want a dozen or so...    Almost forgot, get some ballons and let her shoot at them and put lots of air in so she hits a few at first...It kind of lures them in...

Was thinking bout vintage bow as well if not to pricey . Times a little tight rite now as I'm sure a lot of you know. We'll what ebey has this so cool. Keep the advice coming I need it!

You should be able to find a recurve from the 60's or 70's in very good condition and about 30 pounds for under a hundred bucks shipped at the big online auction sites.  I'd make her stop shooting until you get something she can get back to a good solid anchor or she WILL develop bad habits and in the end, they may make her want to quit altogether.  Got close to that situation myself.

If she doesn't want to stop, use her desire to build anticipation for her new bow.  Nothing like waiting for a package in the mail!  If she insists on shooting, STRESS that she will shoot better with the new bow and point out any form things she is doing wrong with the heavy bow.  Not in a way that will annoy her, just in a way where she will understand that she'll have to do things differently later.  She'll appreciate the lighter bow when you do get it.

Gonna hafta wait a bit. Hopefully next week or the week after. Fingers crossed. You are rite Dave I've shut her down for now. She was getting board cause she knew it wasn't set up for her. Hoping  she will enjoy more if I can get her own setup.
