Time for me to learn another trad related skill. I won some string material at the Muzzy, now I need to learn how to put it to use. Best instructional video? I know I need some serving material, a string jig....what else? What say you?

Get the "Doin-the-Twist" DVD,good DVD on making strings, jigs and all about string making.

Jamie, I sent you an email with some info that might help. One of the things I've learned (the hard way) is that you have to be careful with store-bought string jigs. Oftentimes the numbers written on them and length of the strands cut off those jigs don't match up. Usually they are way too short which results in a string that is too short for your bow. I sent you the plans to make your own string jig that way you know the numbers are correct.

I second "Doin' the Twist" DVD. Been making my own strings for 50 years and that's the best I've seen. Forget the jig, more work than they're worth. Get a good serving tool though, they're cheap.

3-Rivers has a DVD on flemish String making, its a half hour long and runs about 20 bucks.

Learn to make both types, Flemish and Endless. Good to know and your friends can be the guinuea pigs, so to speak. They will want you to make them for their bows too! Good shootin, Steve

Thanks for the good word on "Doin' the Twist". We made it after a lot of folks requested a video that went into detail.
It's almost 2 hours long, with no advertising. There's 11 different segments covering 2 bundle flemish, 3 bundle flemish, padded loops, endless strings, center serving, tying in silencers, tying a bowyer's knot (timber hitch), making an endless string jig, plans for making a flemish string board, plans for making a jig to pre-stretch the string, etc.
We show the strings being built start to finish. We don't take any shortcuts, or leave out any "secrets". What you see on the video is what you would see if you sat at my shop and watched, or if you watched Joe (rare now that he's retired).
Making strings isn't hard, but explaining it with words is--like trying to explain how to tie your shoes. Good instruction and a little practice goes a long way. Once your friends find out you are making strings, you'll get plenty of practice.

Jamie,
Definitely get Chad's video. You can order it from his website or any of the usual trad supply vendors.
By the way, I have both DVD's and you will learn a lot more from Doin' the Twist. Not knocking the 3R product, just that there is a greater amount of instruction with Doin' the Twist.
Chad is a fine gentleman to deal with!

Doin' The Twist is without a doubt the best out there, it covers all areas of string making, including some advanced stuff.
The 3Rivers string making vid is how I learned...it's a basic, very easy to learn video that I still refer to at times....
Good luck buddy, it's simple!

Once you get your jig made, if you want any one on one instruction, give me a yell.

Do a you tube on making strings you might get enough free information to get you on down the road.
