I've been at this traditional archery thing for several years but never had the opportunity to even see an animal when I have had the longbow or even be around people that have made kills with traditional equipment, so that leads me to these questions. Do I have enough punch to get through whitetail and feral hogs in the wilds of East Texas shooting a 530gr arrow w/175gr Magnus II head coming out of a Marriah Chinook longbow 58# @ 28" and I draw about 26 3/4" -27"?
Without a doubt. I shoot 47#@26" and have blown through deer w/ the same weight arrow .
No question.
LOL I was just wondering cause them arrows sure are SLOW compared to my compound so I was wondering plus with all the talk on here about EFOC and people shootin over 200gr up front and stuff, I was getting worried.
At first I wondered too, but my first trad kill was a corsican ram, shot him with a 55 pound longbow, 525 grain arrow, and it passed through him like a lightning bolt. Never did find that arrow.
I think you're good.
I'm shooting a 504 gr arrow out of a Marriah Thermal. I have no doubts whatsoever that it will blow through a deer or hog. The Thermal is very quick for a bow shooting a nearly 11 gr/pdf arrow.

Try and remember that an awful lot of people have taken an awful lot of animals over the years with traditional equipment--everything from 35# on up, and with all kinds of arrows and broadheads too. Even before anybody ever heard of "FOC" or, for that matter, fiberglass, carbon, or FF strings.
Now, having said that, I think the underlying issue is feeling confident enough to shoot at an animal with traditional equipment. I think this is something that most former compound bow or gun hunters feel when they make the switch to stick and string. I'm sure that everyone will agree that the only way to get confident is to shoot, shoot, shoot. If your setup hits where you aim it, and has a reasonable amount of kinetic energy (sounds like you do), you will be FINE. And remember to BREATHE...................
That setup worked very well prior to the compound bow coming on the scene. We have to remember that archery history is possibly about 25,000 years old, not 35 years old. You may have to deprogram yourself and then read some old magazines and books 8^).
That setup will kill anything in North America, and most of what's in Africa.
I killed this Antelope with Bob Lee Classic 46@28 with a Axis 500 @29.5 inches with 75 gr brass insert and 165 gr Zwicky

ChekMate Falcon 45# @ 28". GT 3555, 125 Snuffer SS, 50 gr brass insert.
You've got plenty of knockdown power.

I'm trying to :banghead: I'm going hunting next week and maybe the "curse" will be lifted.
Sounds like you have an awesome set up and more than enough to get the job done! I wish I had a Chinook, took long of a wait for me!
Lets see some pics of your set up!

I'll see if I can remember to get some pics this weekend and post 'em up for ya. Now I've had this bow for 8 years if my math is correct. Got it for my 31st birthday and my 39th birthday was yesterday so 8 years it is. LOL I had ric write "No. 31" on it so I could remember when I got it. About all I can remember on wood choices is that I got red elm for the limbs. I think the ex-wife put the vodoo curse on it when she bought it too.
What Mr. G. Stout said......
"BRONZ" I love that photo !! Nice .....
Good Luck this weekend!
As stated above I believe you have more than enough "omph" to take game with your set up.
I've had pass throughs on feral goats and sheep with a recurve 43lbs@26". Pass throughs on pigs with my current bow; 51lbs@26" shooting 2117 in the 570 grain range.
I believe that shot placement is the key.
Aloha,
Mark
Absolutely, you have plenty of punch for most anything that walks on this continent. Just make sure your equipment is tuned and you are shooting straight and you will put those animals on the ground with no problem.
Allan
No doubt whatsoever... Make sure you have perfect arrow flight with a "scary" sharp broadhead. Your set up will shoot through any deer like butter...

KerPOW!
no problem ! i use low 50# Hill style bows with 525gn cedars , dacron string and regulatly zing through our tough Aussie hogs....
Thanks for all the words of wisdom and encourgement. A few pics for BowHuntingFool. Like I said all I can remember is that the limbs are red elm. I hope you like 'em too cause it took about an hour on dial up!! :banghead:

Thank you sir.
string bean, that's a nice look'n bow!
Thanks. It may not be the "best" bow out there but it's worth EVERY penny and well worth the wait! Maybe one day I'll be able to afford another.
string bean.....That is a very nice bow, and it has enough power to kill anything in North America....go kill something with it....birds, rabbits, squirrels, heck, anything.
All you need to do is kill some critters with it to get your confidence up.

recovering form back surgery last I ended up useing a 43# BW PMA. I had good tuned arrows and got compelte pass throughs on 2 adult does. You will be fine.

Gotta call from my buddy today wanting me to come over and shoot so I packed up my target and reached in the closet to get my compound bow case, took a couple of steps, then put it back and grabbed the Chinook and out the door I went. I know it's just a target but I was suprised(plesantly)when my arrows where sticking just as far in it as his(he shootin' 60# compound). It sure helped with the "deprogramming" if nothing else. Seems I shoot better when I dont' think about it, just pick a spot, draw, anchor and release. At times it seems like I'm almost there and other times like I ain't gonna make it. Thanks again for the encouragement!!
I'm not getting to go hunting this weekend but sometime next week then it's on full tilt boogie!!
Note the air bubbles, and yes there were two holes in this deer

If you have any trouble with that setup it is because of shooter error.Much more than enough bow and arrow weight for the things you want to hunt than is needed. jmo
