Title: What is this bow wood?
Post by: frankwright on August 13, 2009, 04:17:00 PM
My Stepson has this bow and asked me about what it was made of, I am terrible at identifying wood and need your help.
I hope the pictures show it well enough. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v75/frankt/Archery/taylorbow6348x2029.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v75/frankt/Archery/taylorbow22048x806.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v75/frankt/Archery/taylorbow2043x435.jpg)

Is it several different woods or just stained differently? Thanks!

I'd say ipe backed with hickory, with an oak riser.  Maybe red elm for the backing.

The back kind of looks like a hickory backing cut straight from the back of a log.  It looks like some of the cambium is still on it.

I agree with Apex about the ipe and the handle does look like oak.  Not sure about the thin handle laminate;  maybe osage?

I agree. Hickory backed ipe.
