Title: Anyone use fur tracers?
Post by: KSdan on August 09, 2009, 11:15:00 PM
Been thinking about these- particularly for practice as the secondary feedback from trajectory REALLY improves accuracy.

Just wondering if any of you have used them and how they affected flight.

I started using them this past spring on a few arrows! I have them on all my arrows now, I love them, doesn't change a thing with the flight of my arrows either!

I started using them a couple of months ago and like them for the reason you stated. I don't think there is any detrimental effect on arrow flight.

I use some. They do not give me as much of a trajectory image as white fletching, but they sure show up like ping pong ball sized spots on the target. I especially like them on wild turkey or other dark fletch which disappears in flight.

You can get them from places like Sportsman's warehouse / Cabelas- in the fly tying stuff.

They are made out of dyed rabbit fur I think. You can also use them (i use the natural (rabbit) colored) for fur string silencers as well.

The new video by Steve Gorr Bowhunting Reflections, has alot of really good footage of Steve using the tracers on his arrows.

I use fur or feathers on my hunting arrows.  You can get the feathers from a hobby store for really cheap--a big pack of marribou feathers is a buck or two.  Just peel and glue.

Might find colored fur there too, or something similar, or just buy a rabbit pelt for a couple of bucks and you have a lifetime supply.  The trick to cutting these is get a SHARP knife (I use an X-acto knive).  Don't try to run the blade over the hide--you'll cut too much hair.  Turn it hide side up, stick the knife through the pelt into a cutting board, then pull the hide to make the cut.

Try them sometime Terry--you'll be amzazed at the difference.  I have some arrows that are bright yellow and some that are chartruese, from nock to point--very bright.  The tracer is almost like a lighted nock.
