Title: Forging Without Heat
Post by: tippit on March 30, 2007, 05:20:00 PM
First day forging since last fall that I didn't need to turn my propane heater on...beautiful day in mid 60's.  Most of the snow is melted, my hunting trips are over...that is until May with vermonster13 & June with Quebec Quest Black Bears  :)

Anyway after seeing a few nice knives at the TX Sweat, I decide to forge up a couple straight hunters.

Top 3 are flat ground skinner/capers just waiting for some nice file work on the top of the blade.

Bottom 2 are hollow ground hunters that are slow cooling to be finished...Doc

Okay Tippit, guess I missed something. How did you forge without heat? Those are good looking blades.

2fletch,  The heat was from my propane space heater for ME!  With the cold winter I couldn't work in my garage without extra heat.  I did have my forge on today but worked out side  :)

Tippit,
I've been meaning to ask all along if any of you forge knife makers if you had ever made a bird/trout knife. One of my oldest and favorite knives is an old case bird/trout knife. I'd like to retire it and get a new one.

As always Jeff, beautiful stuff. Love the lines of all of them, especially the lowest one. I always enjoy how you do each one's lines just a bit different. Can't wait to see the finished products!

Yeah, vermonster13 has it about right. The one I have is 3.25" in blade lenght and the point is  up swept a little more. I don't have any way to get pics right now. My daughter took her camera back to college with her.  Guess I should break down and get my own. LOL

Jeff...as always, reall sweet looking knives. That hollow ground at the bottom looks fantastic.

Didn't I send you some desert ironwood I had with that sheephorn? I think that would look great, with an endcap of sheep horn and a black micarta spacer on that bottom blade.

If I didn't, I intended to. As soon as I get moved I can forward it along for you. Its got all this wavy twisty black grain in an orangy-brown background...very sweet stuff.

Vance did you ever get a broadhead on the end of your arrow, or were you hunting catch and release at the Sweat? ROTFL

I was field testing a NEW mechanical Woodsman.

Besides Curtis had confiscated all my sharp instruments after the first afternoon  :banghead:    :banghead:

That was probably a good decision. My boy thinks that you're Santa when he sees pics of you and I'd hate to have to explain that Santa can't make it this year dues to trauma from extreme blood loss from a self inflicted wound.    :D

I have a few racks you can have from the last couple deer I've got that you can have Jeff. I might even have some to spare for Frank if I look.
