Do any of you guys use Thermacell when still hunting? How effective is it when moving slowly and do you use the holster or is there a better way to carry it when it is on?

i have it in a holster and attach that to my pack.
-
I wear an extra belt with water bottle, small pouch, and my Thermacell holster. I hang it sort of loose because the back gets hot and needs ventilation.
I have used mine all summer stillhunting groundhogs. I only got one mosquito bite in over four months while using my unit.
-
Yep, They work while walkin' too...Doc
-
I attach my holster to my backpack and take plenty of refills :readit:
The mosquitoes and blackflies will suck ya dry up here.
-
Strap the holster to the wide belt of my fanny pack with shoulder straps. I often have my camera in a quick connect pouch and try to keep my Thermacell flat on top of that for best effect. Works well chasing piggies in the swamp.

Thanks guys
I guess I'm going shopping!
Suprised to hear that this thing still works when it's on your back and you're moving forward, albeit slowly.

A lot of the compounders at my club use them when they shoot the field course. They tend to move on pretty quick since they have so many arrows to shoot. So if it works there, it would work when you are still hunting.
I use mine for all early season hunting, at least until the cold knocks out the gnats, deer flys and mosquitos.

If you're moving too fast for it be effective, you're moving WAY too fast to stillhunt, IMO.
-
Good point Kevin; If you are getting bitten....slooow down!

Did they change something with the Thermacell? I thought it said in the instruction manual not to use it in the holster, or while moving.
-
That is what the instructions say but they work great while hiking/hunting. I just got back from a backpacking trip and it worked great. It was a little hard to start above 10,000 ft elev...

Big Al,
I wondered the same thing. Last winter when I first looked at the unit at Gander Mt. the package clearly warned against use in an upright position in the holster. Later, in the spring when I finally purchased one, the warning was no longer on the box.
So far nothing has melted or burned. Works great!
-
Used one at Ray Hammonds in June for the first time. When I strapped it on my belt it hung horizontally. Never had a problem with it.
-
What do these things burn? What about the residue from the burn being breathed-in? I think it may be as bad as just applying Deet to your hide.
-
George I have used it still hunting and while sitting still. I dont like the smell of the "Smoke", it actually gives me a headache....so I am sure its not really the best thing to be breathing.
-
Bug repellant bothers me(sneezing, burning eyes) a whole lot more than Thermacell fumes.
Being cooped up with one in a pop up blind might get a bit rough. Don't know.
-
I still use them anyway, I cant understand how I used to hunt without them, LOL.
I just use them as little as possible while sitting still.

They do work great, I use mine in my pop up for a few minutes every hour of so and have no problems. I also take it to the kids soccer games and just set it in the ground. As a matter of fact I'm sitting out on the back patio watching the kids in the swimming pool with it on right now. I will have to get a holster for it and try it walking around. I wonder if its possible to make something up insted of buying one?
-
love mine. i use it in the holster connected to the shoulder strap of a pack. rests flat on my shoulder when i am walking. havent tried shootin that way yet. my instuctions saw to use it horizontal only, not vertical. the flame needs to contact the plate under the pad. when its vertical the top of it gets pretty hot.
-
the "scent pad" is a flower extract that the bugs don't like when it is smoldering. I think you shouldn't try breathing it in, or using inside a blind, but an occassional whiff shouldn't be a big deal. Likely better than deet, a known carcinogen
-
I use it while still hunting. It is supposed to remain horizontal. I just taped on a rawhide sling. I hang it around the back so as to breathe in the fumes as little as possible. Works great. Jawge
-
Which is more likely to cause a problem...a occaisional whiff from the thermacell or west nile....encephalitis.....lyme disease...etc...?
-
I'm with Beastmaster and Stobber and and Jawge and others. Any risk far outweighed by the benefits. I'll often attach it to the top of my daypack when tiptoeing in during early season hunts. I even use it when putting stands up or trimming. As essential as your binoculars.

anyone try the earth scent pads??
