Title: Tuning 2018's
Post by: Dozer on August 08, 2009, 04:13:00 PM
Getting ready to tune some 2018's that are 30". The bow's a Bob Lee recurve 64" AMO pulled to 54#'s. Anybody have some point weight suggestions to cut down the tuning time? They'll be fletched with 3 5" shields.

Thank You.

Dozer,  For what it's worth.  I shoot a JD Berry that is 50@28, drawn to 29 and arrows cut to 29.5. The Berry is a mild deflex/reflex and quite fast. It would be in the 53-54 # range at my draw length. For me, 2016 with 125 grain heads work well.  I have some 2018s but haven't tried them yet.  Guess what I'm trying to say is I would guess that points up in the 170 gr area would be a good place to start on your 2018s.

I would go with 145gr. to start with.  My 62" longbow 56# @ 28" shoots 30" 2018's very well with this set up. I draw 27"  Good luck.

Im shooting a 56'' one piece recurve, 53# @ 28. I cut my 2018's to 28-3/4''. I find that point weights from 145 to 200 shoot practically the same. I go with the heavier weight because I prefer a ~600g arrow.

YMMV.

I'm with decOy.
I shoot 2018 out of all three of my bows.  I have a 27 1/2 to 28' draw depending on the bow.  They are a 57#@28 Bighorn recurve, a Fox long bow thats 55@28 and a howatt Bushmaster LB thats 60@28.  I cut them 29" BOP and load the heads to 200 gr. to give a 600 gr. arrow.  I use a 75gr steel insert in a 125gr broadhead. This set up has some real punch and shoots very well also.  Not to heavy but heavy enough to do the job.

I shoot mostly wood but I do have a doz 2018's cut to 30 1/4" that shoot well out of all my mid 50# bows with 175 grains. they also shoot well in my 47# with 200 grains up front.

I've been shooting 29" 2018s out of my 53# Toelke Whip.  I'm currently using a 125 gr broadhead.  So far so good. I need lots and lots of practice, but on a good day I'm grouping really well out to 20 yds.

I have some 2018's and you'd get a good start with some 125gr broadheads.

I can shoot 2018's out of my 55# and 62# bow with 100gr or 125gr broadheads.  As soon as I go up to 140gr+, they start acting goofy.  My arrows are cut to 29" and my draw is almost that.

A recurve, cut at least to center, I'll say 145g.
Outa my longbow, 52 @ 30", 30" arrow I shoot 175g.
