Title: Alaska Bowhunting Co. Maasai or Samurai???
Post by: Oliverstacy on August 07, 2009, 09:22:00 PM
Okay so without bringing money into the equation (I'm not rich or even comfortable for the record...5 and 7 year old kids will do that to a person) but wanted to know what people that have used or shot the new Grizzlystik broadheads think, mainly the Maasai and Samurai line.  Please don't turn this into a money issue thread...just a friendly discussion.

My current arrow is an Easton Axis 400 spine, 100 grain brass HIT insert and 150 grain head.  I'm looking at either the Samurai or the Maasai line...150 grain versions.  Does the curve of the Maasai's blade limit its penetration in comparison to the Samurai's straight blade configuration?  I like the looks of the Maasai's over the Samurai's but looks don't get you very far!

As it stands now I'm going to use what I have on hand...either 150 NAP Razorcaps, 150 grain 2 blade Thunderhead or 150 grain Snuffers...probably the 150 grain NAP Razorcaps.  With that said I also have some 160 grain grizzlies that I'm getting sharpened (160 grain head plus 40 grain adaptor) to use with my other arrows, same arrow but with 50 grain brass adaptors.  I either have to use a 150 grain head with my current arrows or use a 200 grain head with a new batch I'm making with 50 grain brass inserts.  I knew when I bought two dozen shafts on sale it was a good idea.  I'm also thinking about getting some pre-sharpened Grizzlies from KME.

If I were to get some with my hard earned money and wanted to hunt Black Bears or Whitetails which would be better?  I'm assuming like everything else whatever shoots the best is what I'd want to use.  I'm leaning towards the two blade broadhead going forward now that I have a KME Knife sharpener and all the stones.

Bear trip #1 of my carrier can't get here quick enough...25 days and counting!

I've only had one experience with an ABS bh...not first hand, but I was there to see the results...

It was a Maasai bh that a TG'er shot at a TX hog... the arrow failed to penetrate and, the first 1/2" of the BH snapped completely off...

Like I said, my only experience, maybe just a fluke....

If it were me I would stick with the Razor caps or Snuffers....

I'd use the RazorCaps.

Whatever you use, stay away from the scapula...

The pre sharpened Grizzlies from KME are my first choice.

I have a few of the 150gr Maasai and 200gr  Samurai broadheads which I turkey and hog hunted with this spring. They are both nice broadheads very thick solid main blades I don't know how you would break one they are much thicker blades than my Mangus 150gr Stingers but anything is possiable I guess. I like the blade shape and design of the samurai 200gr myself nice long lean blade that comes very sharp I shot a 48lb longbow and 47lb recurve this spring they blew right through turkeys and hogs like butter. I recovered all shot arrows/broadheads then cleaned and resharpened them so they are ready to hunt again.
