Title: Elbow pain
Post by: Gordon Jabben on August 06, 2009, 03:58:00 PM
Anyone out there have these symptoms in their bow arm elbow?  This morning while target practicing, I felt something pop in my elbow while drawing the bow.  It caused some pain and I new it was time to quit.  Later today, I thought maybe I could shoot a lighter bow and decided to do a little squirrel hunting.  I was tired of setting around the house but the way my elbow felt, I new I shouldn't be shooting a bow.  Anyway on my second shot, I felt a couple of pops in my elbow and the pain was so great I rolled around on the ground for a couple of minutes although this didn't really help the pain any. Now it's painful to push against anything.  I couldn't draw a bow of any weight right now.  Has anyone had this happen?

I would go see your doctor first.I had elbow pain a couple of years ago.I had some tennis elbow pain acording to my doctor,he told me to get an elbow brace.I did that and got some Physical Therapy exercises off the net and did those with rest and ice. That helped me alot but my elbow didn't pop like you described, was just painful when I shot. But go see your doctor is always best.

Been there done that.  After I did it with my bow, it started happening while bench pressing also.  You just need to take some time off from shooting...like a couple weeks.

I have found that now, if I rub the tendon just above the elbow before I shoot, I never have a problem.

You might want to start out with a light weight bow if you have one, when you do start back.

Thanks guys.  I am going to the after hours clinic here in a little while. My family doctor is there tonight.  I have had tennis elbow before and this seems totally different and I'm really concerned.  Shooting this old bow is just about my only hobby.

Elbow is nothing to take for granted. I broke mine at end of January (lots of therapy ughhhhhh) and have been shooting again since early July. Still not where I want to be when it comes to shooting the bow but on the bright side the Dr. says it's great therapy as long as I don't over do it. It sure beats turning a screw into a block of wood for therapy. LISTEN to the Dr.

The doc said he didn't think I had any separations in my tendons and to see how it was in a few days.  If it wasn't a
lot better he would refer me to a specialist.  Otherwise no bow shooting for three or four weeks.

Try this link from the NY Times...you need to ask your doc about this procedure.

Thanks Bill, it does sound promissing, but I bet it will be a couple of years before the procedure is done here in Oklahoma.  I'll ask my doctor if he has heard of it when I go see him next week.

I started with calcific tendinitis (bone spur in elbow) in Febuary of this year.  after 6 weeks of therapy I injured the same elbow in a tractor accident and tore my tendon.  Surgery followed and then more therapy and recovery time.  Elbow pain can be crippling as far as an archer is concerned.

I went back to a 30# bow at ETAR and this week moved up to a 41# bow but my elbow is only half as strong as it used to be.  I go to the gym also which should help.

If you continue to have pain see a specialist.  You may have popped something and it's nothing to fool around with.

OsteoBiflex or the like, the drink Elation. I've had great results with them. Also shooting heavier arrows to make a smooth shooting bow even smoother.
