Title: Who carries survival item when hunting?
Post by: frassettor on August 06, 2009, 11:49:00 AM
Being lost in a national forest ounce and having mother nature teach me a valuable lesson about being prepared, I thought i would ask what you all carry with you incase you end up spending alot more time in the woods then planned

I normally carry a waterproof match container, dryer lint in a small baggie, and a fixed blade knife, but I hunt pretty close to my fathers house and he knows the areas I hunt and no chance of getting lost so if I'm not out shortly after dark someone knows where to find me so I figure a small fire will serve well if I happen to get an injury that would prevent me from getting out on my own.

It's important and also part of the fun. Never been lost but I carry all I need to survive if I was. Most of my stuff fits compactly in pockets. I have a big knife, (Recon scout) plyer tool, compact sharpener, compasses, water purifier tablets, fire starters, string, simple first aid stuff, tape, wistle and I think that's about it.

I wear a two inch leather belt with a sheath knife, water and a small leather pouch (8"X7")which carries, folding hunter knife, shapening steel, compass, bic lighter, mag fire starter, tube of lint, five waterproof fire starters, whistle, small but complete first aid kit. If I go in the woods it's the first thing that goes on.

These are always with me...

Knife, Cell(turned off), matches, lighter, small first aid kit, light, canteen, 25'cord and a small bone saw.  Lucky for me I have never had to stay out longer than I planned,, but being prepared is always a good thing.

A good lighter as well.

a knife; a lighter; a magnesium fire starter; unpaid bills in my wallet for tinder.
I don't worry about toilet paper; but the chipmunks live in fear. ( They are soft; I have no idea how they explain it to their families).

Always - got a few bits with me from a good stout knife, fire starting stuff w/kindling (waxed cotton balls and natural tinder) all kept in waterproof bags, first aid stuff, bllod stopping stuff in case of slip with good stout knife, some tylenol, parachute chord, and duct tape.

Here in eastern NC I could hunt a place one day that I am not 150 yards from a rd, next day or during all of bear season I am hunting around catfish lake where it is considered a wilderness area by the state and can be some of the most thick stuff you'll find this side of cambodia - LONG ways from any road or help. People look at my pack and think I am nuts till they hunt with me one time! Next time they have gathered their own gear. LOL

For my elk hunting mountain trips I have a gallon size ziploc bag that contains a few essential things that include a couple of trioxane fuel bars for starting fires, a zippo lighter(kept inside its own tiny ziploc baggie to contain the fuel vapors), a space blanket, trash bag that can be used as makeshift raingear, 100ft of parachute cord, a whistle and  small signal mirror, a small sharpening stone, small folding knife, small tube of superglue, small roll of guaze. Also in my pack  I carry a PUR filter and a water bottle or two bottles of water, and some food; jerky, snickers bar, dried fruit of some sort like apricots or raisins.  Fleece sweater vacuum packed/compressed into a small packet.  LED flashlight and a spare battery, compass, SPOT locater device.  I have a gps but do not usually carry it.

Well, I always have the essentials, My longbow, quiver, and a razor sharp dependable knife and a knife sharpener, from Alaskan bowhunting supply, about 3 quart size zip lock bags and zip ties.  That's it!!  I was fortunate enough to get survival training in the Corps.  I honestly believe and have made a fire out of what I found, can filter water with what is at hand and there is always something to eat, and find shelter or make it.  It is well worth the time to learn some survival stuff, you will never leave home without it.  There are literally thousand of good survival books out there, just don't read them, go out in a safe place (back yard) and try a few till you are confident, then you are prepared for anything.  You can take 60# of stuff for survival with you, or just use what mother nature has right there, worked for the Native Americans for thousands of years.

Quick clot and a knife.  Biggest threat to your life is a fall from a tree stand or accidentally cutting yourself with a broadhead.  That goes for the majority of the hunting population hunting within walking distance to some help.

Mostly heat packs, a lighter, basic first aid (band aids, gauze, ointment), benedryl pen, aloe, string (slings and tourniquets), extra food, extra lights, compass, flashlight, rain gear, sharpener, and that's it I think... I plan to add water tabs and a space blanket this year... even though in CT we don't tend to go more than a mile or 2 into the woods (and often there are houses close by), you just never know... OH I also carry a CPR mask incase I need to perform CPR on someone... again, you just never know...

Always have a large, stout-bladed knife, as well as a small pocketknife, a new bic lighter, a large-bore pistol, and at least 6' of strong cordage or rope.  A cell phone (on silent) and a small GPS usually take the trip as well, but I rarely hunt more than an hour from civilization.

A regular old roll of electrical tape is always with me.  You can tape up a cut or use it for quick reapirs, it will stretch pretty tight and hold.

Several of them. He should have gotten a lifetime of beatings with a cane.

Anyhow, I'm with some of you all, I carry entirely too much stuff in my pack. I live by the philosophy, rather have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.

500 sw....bullets...two types of fire starters fishing line with hooks in a pill bottle...two lights...two gps...compass...pup tent...space blanket...two pairs socks...plenty of water, jerky, trailmix and a full roll of pink flaggers tape in case you do get lost and need to leave a trail for rescuers...this is only for hunting deep in the forest though.when hunting between roads i take a very light pack as i would have to be completely retarded to get lost in an area completely surrounded by roads.if i'm guiding the list gets longer.

My basic survival set up is this.

US Army canteen with mug.  It comes with a nylon cover.

In the cover with the canteen and mug I store one emergency blanket.

To the canteen fashioned in a braided strap is 50 feet 5 strand parachute cord for a total of 250 feet.

On the outside there is a little pouch and I have some char cloth and a striker in there.

On my belt the gerber infantry knife.

My two concerns is always for water and cold temps.

Combine this with my bow and I am pretty much good to go.

Would love to know where to get the instant blood clot stuff.  I would figure out a way to add that as well.

2 knives (small folder, 1 larger fixed blade)

Katadyn water filter

"Strike Anywhere" matches in a waterproof tube

Small 10mm revolver

Extra pair of socks (maybe more for comfort than survival)

Small surgical/first-aid kit

100' of paracord

storm proof matches, cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly, magnesium shavings, camp cup, 3 tea bags, jerky, trail mix, flint and steel, 1 pair wool socks, 1 pair cotton socks, 1 T shirt, 1 pair underwear, TP, 2 water bottles, water pouch / hydration sysem for backpack, water purifier, ultralight hammock, army poncho, 100 ft para cord, head lamp.  With this stuff in my pack, I have stayed out for 3 days and could have stayed out 5 comfortably.  In ultra cold weather I would add wool top and bottom, thermal underwear, and hand warmers.

Waterproof matches, heat packs, space blanket, radio (and after one stupid event spare batteries), two compasses and a GPS, small folding knife, fixed blade knife, water, either some energy bars or trail mix and either an S&W .357 or a Ruger, either .44 mag or .45 with spare ammo in case of warm blooded snakes.

I helped out a friend who taught a wilderness survival class at a local community college. Part of the students' grade was what they put in their survival kits. One student had the usual stuff knife, compass, cord, first aid kit, etc. He also had a small porn picture out of a Playboy. When we asked him what it was for he said that it was "the will to survive". I would have never taught of that one.

I always have some kind of knife and a lighter on me. If I am going to the woods, I tend to have another knife, like a sheath knife. A piece of light nylon cord, say 10 or 12 feet, ties up everything from bandages made from clothes to improvised repairs. A bandanna is useful as a a bandage. A candle can be shaved a bit and used to start a fire. My watch has an altimeter and compass built into it.
Depending on where I am headed I might add in a VHF radio, an EPIRB, a GPS, a map, a headlamp. Some bright colored flagging tape in a roll is real handy to mark your trail if someone is looking for you, or if you need to follow your trail back out again.
A sharpener for the knives is handy but probably can get along without it for quite a while.
I wear some good clothes for the weather, plus I usually have extra clothes, both for me and for my wife if I carry a pack. A dry hat and pair of gloves to hand to her is worth a lot. Extra dry socks and boot insoles can be carried in vacuum seal-a-meal pouches and have been very welcome if the sitution lasted long enough...
If I am not carrying a rifle, I tend to have a large handgun, either a .357 or a .44 on me, with a couple of reloads or speed loaders.
Finally, I tell someone I trust where I/we are going, when to pull the plug on a rescue, and tell them when we get back safely so they don't call the Coast Guard.

Like Ethan said earlier, electrical tape and Super glue for cuts! Clot stop stuff works good too! And like Toddster says, practice some of your skills at home or when camping! Good shootin, Steve
