Title: forgot my armguard
Post by: pktm on August 06, 2009, 05:24:00 AM
Got home last night a little late, rushed through dinner and headed outside back for a little bit of shooting. It was dark so I turned on the lights and went to work on my form. After a couple of rounds I noticed I forgot something, no armguard.
I've been shooting the Chinook I picked up here on the classified section. Very impressed on how this bow handles. So impressed that after two days of shooting it, I called Dan and ordered another one, I bought one of his demo bows that he said was in mint shape, should get it on friday.
Maybe it's me but that Chinook fits me like no other. Does it make sense that the fit of the bow contributes to the lack of need for an armguard. Don't get me wrong, I don't intend to continue to shoot without it but I was just wondering.

No shame in not using an armguard.

Haven't needed one since I been a boy.

If you don't need it, Why use it?

I was 10 years old or so when an old timer pulled me aside at a 3-d shoot and told me if I always made sure the back of my hand was in line with my shooting arm (in other words, make sure your wrist isn't bent) I would never need an armgaurd again. He was right.

I know it doesn't work with everybody, but always has for me..

Good luck with your new bows....

Todd

I never use an armguard with my recurve but I do use one with my longbow handled, D longbow. Don't often hit my arm though.

Groves built their handles "out" a bit so that an armguard was not needed. When I practice in the warm months I don't use as a rule. However, in the hunting season I have had the bowstring hit a loose shirt of light weight jacket and it cost me a nice  buck. I use an armguard now when I hunt, just as a precaution.

I don't shoot with an armguard unless I have a heavy coat on and I need to get the sleeve out of the way. Other than that, don't need one.

In addition to how the grip is shaped and how one holds the bow, it a lot to do with brace height.  The higher the brace height, the less likely the string is to hit the forearm.
