Title: Airing out hunting clothing
Post by: Cherokee Scout on August 05, 2009, 08:41:00 AM
Do you hang up your hunting clothing and air it outside prior to the season?
If so, how long before the season do you hang them?
Do you have any other effective methods for controlling scent or non scent on your gear?

I use Sports Wash,  then rinse a second time in Bakiing soda. If it's too cold or too wet to hang outside I throw them in the dryer. We never use smelly stuff on our regular clothes so the dryer is not tainted with perfumes and such. We prefer to dry them outside but a scent free dryer works fine.

I hang my clothes outside about two weeks before hunting season starts and leave them hanging outside all season long. My gear hangs below our deck on a clothesline that I put up. To protect the clothes from moisture I cover them with plastic sheeting and clothes pen the edges of the plastic together and clothes pen the sheeting to the clothesline. Going out in the mornings to get my clothes is a real eye opener    especially in the late season! When I wash them I use a no odor, no UV brightener detergent.

Nothing special, just wash them with other clothes.
Apparently our deer here in southern Pa haven't caught on to that UV stuff yet.  My wool stuff hangs in the garage, so it probably smells like Sebrings and Cherokees, but it works okay.

I wash my clothes with unscented laundry detergent in late summer and hang to dry for a few days before storing in a rubbermaid container. During the season I remove my hunting clothes at end of day and hang them out on my screened in porch until the next time I use them. Occasionally I wash them mid-season as required.

I wash my clothes with unscented laundry soap every time I wear them.  Then dry them in the dryer and put in a tupperware tub. We don't used scented stuff on our regular clothes either just for that reason.

Same as most, but store them with fir bow (common tree round here)to build in a cover scent.

Well, we have a breeze way between our garage and home, I hang them there, also keeps unwanted critters from getting inside.  I wash mine in baking soda and hang dry, before season wash in uv killer, thats it.  Though few years ago did use dead down wind and was impressed by it.

Wash with unscented detergent, dry if you don't use smelly stuff (or air dry them), then keep your hunting clothes in a tote box with a couple cedar branches or some local flora in with them.

Big Rubbermaid-type tote box. Open 2 or 3 HS earth scent wafer containers a few weeks before the season.  I'm a little amazed at how many years those wafers seem to recharge if I close the containers after the season.  Nothing's magic, if you're upwind and on the deer's level, you're going to get busted!

Wash them in baking soda, hang them out for a week, put them in tote with fresh earth wafers.I might try storing them with dirt acorns leaves and see how that works.

I hang mine outside for two weeks or so before the season and from the first to the last day, they hang out as often as the weather allows.  If they are not hanging, they are put in plastic totes for hunting clothes only.  No cover scents, scent, etc.

Mine are washed with regular laundry, then folded or hung beside other clothes. Nothing special, no scents, no covers. I hunt the deer on the upwind side.

My buddy hung his hunting clothes out on the front porch. Next morning he went for them to go hunting. Gone!

I wash em in baking soda before the season then air dry.  Once dry I put them in a rubbermaid which has pine/earth scent waffers in it.

I wash all my under layers almsot every time I go out or every other time...it seems im the only guys that sweats here.  Id hate to smell some of your clothes after a long hunting season and no washing.

You could also boil/steep all of that and use it as a spray.  like making tea only you use leaves and bark and things like thart.  Steep em for a while, let cool, the put in a spray bottle.  Great for a cover scent and matches your exact grounds perfectly!

I sweat like a pig so I sure have to keep myself and my hunting togs clean.

I wash the togs in baking soda, and keep hung up in a outside building. I even keep a bag of baking soda in my backpack so as I walk in, if I start to sweat I take a handfull of the baking soda and use under the arms and wipe down with paper towels I also have in the backpack....

At the end of the season (and occasionally during) I put mine in the washer and drier and store them in a drawer. The only difference from regular laundry is no drier sheet.

I've tried most of the techniques mentioned in this thread, but I never saw any advantage to any of it. I like to smell fresh and clean when I hunt!

Just wash mine with reg. laundry... The key is wind direction...put the wind in your face...I dont think you can get clean enough to fool a whitetails nose...just my 2 cents.

I wash in scent free soap and dry in dryer.  Then I pack them into a scent loc bag and a large plastic container with foam seal tape under the lid to keep out the camp and truck smells.  I keep all my main gear in the box like my small pack, glove, hats, harness.....  I use the scent killer spray to kill the scent on boots and gear from time to time.  When I open that box it is like breathing in pure oxygen.

I do all I can to kill the scent on my base layers I wear to the field and my body.  I was the base layer stuff the same and store a couple sets in plastic bags until I use them.  Then I dress in the field.

Sounds like a lot of work and many would say it is a waste of time, but I have killed a few deer and passed on many that were down wind.  They will know you are around, but there is a big difference between knowing you are close and thinking you are far.  I had a deer last year catch me in a bad place where I couldn't do much about it.  Had him at 25' down wind.  Sure he winded me, but he also figured I was a lot farther away than I was.  He would have been dead if I had wished it.  He stood there looking around a good two minutes before he got nervous and took off.  A couple weeks later I had the largest buck of the year catch me 4' up a tree when he ran right past me.  He then circled in looking for a 4 pt. I had kicked up near the base of my stand.  He came to within 10' of me on the opposite side of the tree before he picked up my scent and spooked.  He only went 20 yd. and circled back in again at about 12 yd. looking past me.  He was nervous, but if he knew just how close I was he would have been long gone the first time he past me.

If I hunted on foot most of the time on large tracks of land I wouldn't bother near as much with the scent control.
