Title: Another planting for whitetails thread
Post by: LongBow'erman on August 02, 2009, 07:38:00 PM
Not wanting to hi-jack Izzy's thread on planting for whitetail's I'll start this one. I have roughly a 50'x50' area in the woods that I'm wanting to plant at the end of this month or early September. I have sprayed round up and started clearing the small saplings. My next move is get the rocks cleared and take the Mantis in there to rough up the ground and put down some lime. My question is what would you all plant in this area that gets little sunlight? I'm thinking about trying some Biologic Hot Spot, but wonder if winter wheat and oats would work here with some clover mixed in.

I have a food plot at my club that is somewhat similar to what you describe, but mine is in plant pines.  I usually get winter wheat & oats to grow well there for a fall crop and I add a feeder.  Spring/Summer crop is not too good, the deer strips it to bare earth.
Winter wheat/oats should do well once the leaves drop - more sunlight then.

Try Winter Rye. Your feed store will know what it is.
