Just got back from the garden island of Kauai. This island challenged me to the limit ! Rain forest jungle, dry steep rocky mountains, beauty, danger... the list goes on. I started out by talking to some locals about where and how to hunt . I was after pig and goat, though chickens were tempting since there were so many. I started off with pigs. Well, the jungle is so thick I just could not close in on any thing to get a shot. I did see some pork butt running away from me. Here is some of the stuff I was in.
I started out at the base of these mountains.

This was a pig trail through some wild Hibiscus.

On another occasion I asked a farmer if I could help him out with any pig problems. He agreed, but I never could find any to close the deal.
I also tried my hand at goats on the Na Pali. Toughest climbs I have ever been on. Some of it is so green I thought I was in Eden. Other parts were rocky and hot.

There are actually goats in this pic on the hill about 70 yards out, but my camera sucks so you can't see them. They were in the center of this shot. Of course I got busted.

Here you can see where they were eating the bark off the trees. Again, they are in the back ground, but not visible in this shot from my low tech hunting camera.

A few more pics of where I hiked in and some of the area. Also some little fruits the animals were nibbling.

I did end up taking a small ewe, but used up my batteries by the time I wanted pics of the prize. I worked so hard on this trip and I can't remember ever drinking so much water. I'm so glad I shipped my bow and gave Kauai a try. My first hunting adventure off the main land USA.
Quality stuff. Beautiful scenery & good story. Thanks
I'm looking forward to my fourth trip! I am traveling and only have a work computer so I can't see pics as they are blocked. Will have to wait a couple weeks to see them, dang it!
Good for you! Well-done on the adventure and the nanny!
It's the hard hunts that you always remember :)
The yellow fruit look to guava.
Congratulations on your trophy!
That's a pretty neat hunt there.Glad you had a good time.
Cool adventure!
I don't know what is different today but the pictures show. Yep, I was goina say guava on the fruit.
Nice pics, beautiful area. I was in Maui back in '87 but never got a chance to hunt. People really don't know how tough Hawaii can be along with its natural beauty. Glad you had a great time. :wavey:
Kauai is one beautiful place... can't wait to get back there with my bow.....
I know how you feel , I spent a few days camping on the Napoli Coast trail on the north end of the island . We were chasing goats on some of the steepest terrain I have ever been on , which in itself would be nerve racking but what got me most was there was never any sure footing . The ground was like lava stones and every step had you wondering if you would slide off the edge into the Pacific . It was one of the most beautiful places I have hunted though . Glad you had a great time . I too plan to go back .
Fred
So do the natives still hunt hogs with dogs and machete? (One of the wildest stories I ever heard)
Truly a beautiful place! Would love to make it out there for hogs and goats someday.
I know what you mean about drinking A LOT of liquids. The humidity at times is unbelievable. Congrats on the goat. A hunt to remember for sure.
Yep Earl, some of my friends do hunt with dogs and knives/pig stickers. Went on a few hunts with them. Exciting but not my cup of tea.
Aloha,
Mark
Having hunted Moloka'i a couple trips in the past, I'm looking forward to trying Kauai one of these days. SteveH, are they similar hunts, terrain-wise?
Yes Earl, they do hunt pig with dog and knife. I was invited on one of those hunts but did not have time to make that one.
